I can't see this being released this year, which means this is potentially the last game i'll get on current gen, assuming i'm not balls deep in next gen. It looks like more of the same though, which is awesome.

I never played the first game. Was it a sleeper hit?

Demon Souls and Dark Souls are two of this gen's best games!

This one tough I'm on the fence with. The gameplay I've seen with button prompts (WTF) doesn't give me much confidence...

Where did you see button prompts? I watched the 12 minute video on IGN and I didn't see any button prompts.

Sorry, double post!

The masochistic game of the decade. But, they must make a PC version that works!

(And for christ sakes, stop with the buzz-words. You "gen" and "IP" people sound like geek-hipsters.)

Yes, everyone is super-impressed with your huge geek-wang, now for the rest of us the games were challenging. Sure, taking it slow and methodically certainly helps taking the worst edge off but still...you can't claim they are not challenging games. Especially compared to modern AAA titles.

Anyway, this looks nice, i really hope the PC port is better this time around though.

They said the PC is the main platform and then they port it to consoles. In fact the gameplay video is on PC

Just like in Demon's and Dark Souls. Well maybe bigger now.

Bioshock will be nearly impossible to beat this year

Dark souls did have some cheap deaths but once you understand the rules, the game just gets so fun. It's even better playing with a friend. Watched the 12 min video and it looks a lot tougher. Can't wait.

Trials and error and good memory.

Die alot and remember the patterns of each enemy location and the chokepoints to not die and you will be successful, thats pretty much how Souls games work, trials and errors.

I like the graphics, cloth physics and the environment destruction in this game, but thats all i like about it.

Also this cant be GOTY since not many know the series and the game isnt for everyone so they dismiss it unlike a game like Bioshock.

In some instances yes, but just keeping on your toes and playing carefully will save your ass many times over. Loads of deaths are caused by rushing in to situations, or not understanding the systems and/or equipment. Get some good gear, play carefully and adjust your play style to enemies and it's by far less of a difficult game than some would claim. That said, it is still a challenging title.

Though i suppose some of that might be a bit difficult the first time playing since you don't know the gear and such, but still. I made it through my first time without too many problems tbh. Got stuck on some of the bosses and some of the shittier environments (like finding my way in to the cathedral, or the goddamn crystal caverns that took me forever to navigate), but on subsequent playthroughs, where i've understood the game better, it's been a lot easier. Even when going with a str/dex build that can't take much damage, unlike my first time through where i could basically just tank whatever was stupid enough to stand in front of me, while i pulverised it with my lightning greatsword +5. Even on my first run i punked several of the bosses on my first try (like Sif, Iron Golem and Queelag).

Again though, it takes reflexes and patience to get through it, no doubt about it but mainly it's about learning the game and it's systems imo.

Keyword: patience

Unfortunetly, I have zero of that since i like to be aggressive in combat (hence action games) lol.

But i definitely understand the appeal of the series very much.

I am yet to play dark souls. Haven't even opened the game yet. So little time and PS4 releasing this year as well. Things move so fast

Yeah well actually when you know what you are doing it isnt tough at all. This game is extremly fair but does not forgive any mistakes :) As i plyed the PC version with a new Char the first Boss to kill me were Smough and Ornstein...when i first played the Console Version the damm capra demon raped me 20 times ... there are eveb ppl playing the whole game without spnding a single Soul into soul levels :D crazy Japs i guess

I'm very confident either Grand Theft Auto V or The Last of Us will be the Game of the Year.
*slams 4 pennies on the table*

I'll bet all the money in my pocket on it!

Overrated shit game of the year by gaming press, thats more like it. Dark Souls is the only true gamer's goty, the rest is all talk and no game.

damn i'm lame ... i still haven't even cleared the first area in this game ... got to that first dragon, kept dying and then just got annoyed .. the game isn't hard - it's just annoying! LOL Maybe this one will take a note from Dark Souls

So much love for Dark Souls. So far this is looking great!

I love that a 'big' game like this exists and can thrive among the slew of games that hold the players hand so tight, you can just let them drag you to the finish whilst you play whack-a-mole.

Not for everyone, sure. Not slamming people who enjoy their roller-coaster games. Those can be amazing too!
Commented on 2013-04-13 18:26:15
I defninitely think the whole rollercoaster ride type of gaming is one of the reasons i'm less and less stoked for new games though. To an extent. I tried playing Tomb Raider for example, but it's more like a shitty movie than it is a fun, challenging game. It's all about the story and the set pieces, rather than a challenging game that really lets you explore it, both in terms of environments and systems. That's one of the big things with the Souls games for me, they really invite you to explore HOW to play the game, rather than just have you sit through a blockbuster experience. I think that is why i enjoy games like DotA and LoL and fighters as well, they actually require you to actively explore the game, unlike a lot of AAA titles.

Basically, i think it's fully justified to rip Uncharted and Tomb Raider a new one when contrasted with a great game like Dark Souls :P

I agree with you man.

Whenever I hear that damn 'cinematic' buzzword, I switch off. Actually most buzzwords will do that to me.

On the flip side, I am thoroughly enjoying Bioshock Infinite and that takes the roller-coaster metaphor to heart :)
Ken Levine and crew are just master world builders and I love exploring their stories.

I can't rip into Uncharted and TR. If people enjoy those experiences, more power to them.

But I will say that DS does separate the men from the boys ;)
