If you can think of an old-school beat-them-up like Streets of Rage and you hope they'd make a sequel, this is as close as it gets (in gameplay terms). If you value a well-told cinematic storyline in a game, this is it. Go buy this game, we need Yakuza 4 in the west!
SoR may have been a poor example, but there are many good beat-em ups that don't have coop like Spider man: Maximum carnage on SNES.
Spikeout was actually a spiritual successor to Streets of Rage, and Yakuza is made by the same director and developer and is based on the same combat engine. So yep, by extension this almost literally is a sequel to SoR.
Yu Suzuki and AM2 - makers of Virtua Fighter - did Shenmue. Toshihiro Nagoshi and Amusement vision - makers of Spikeout - did Yakuza.
Yakuza *is* Spikeout combat rolled into a jRPG wrapping. Spikeout *was* a spiritual successor to Streets of Rage. They even pitched SoR to Sega during that time. All of these things are facts.
