Developer Diary PC Xbox 360 PS3

DiRT 3's developers are back in this third DevDiary video to tell us about the realism of the game and all they have done to make its handling being the "best of the Colin McRae games". Whether it's at the vehicle physics, damages impact on the driving, the sensations with a steering wheel or a gamepad and the details of the environment.

Talking about handling physics and passing them off as 'realistic' in reference to an arcade game is silly. These kind of games are all about the fun aspect of it so please, don't keep mentioning realism 24/7. As long as it's not awful graphically, has decent damage modelling and big scale races it will be more than fine.

The problem with the last two games was that the handling was so unrealistic that it detracted from the fun.
It didn't feel like you were driving cars at all.

So is it believable that they're fixing this? I've never played Dirt, but this game looks really fun.

it's not improbable, but I'm a bit skeptical.

I will probably get it anyway as I enjoyed the others, for the most part.

I found the balance they struck to satisfy my liking. I hope they don't detract from the arcade feel. totally agree about the "realism" references though... let's not call it what it isn't.

but, we don't know how realistic the handling is, because we haven't played it.

'Are the physics improved?'
'Yes you now actually distinguish between FWD, RWD or AWD!!'
'Woohoo!!'

Realistic is a broad term and is not necessarily the same as "simulator". Clearly what the devs are trying to do in Dirt3 is keep the game accessible whilst trying to make the cars feeling authentic.

The "problem", at least for me, is the center pivot handling. It doesn't feel like the car has any weight distribution at all. I love Ridge Racer and while that's more extreme and locks into an arc upon drift, I'd say center pivot is more evocative of RR than driving a car - arcadey or otherwise - and that's not what I look for in a rally game.

I dunno what fans of this series are attached to. I think its own sense of identity dictates how much that will change.

probably the graphics :P

And that's a problem. I've never seen Codemasters even admit to the armchair hovercraft physics, which were quite obviously there.
Then, they continued to use the same system in the sequel, yet claimed that the handling was improved.

So, yeah, I'm skeptical.
If they can't even admit it's a problem how can we expect it to get fixed?
I guess saying it's a problem that needs fixing is kind of subjective as the games sell a ton, but I think it's not good... when I can't experience some sense of connection with the road I consider it a problem.

Ken Block's word doesn't count because he backed the last one too and probably got well paid for it.
(I will agree with him on the graphics though. It looks great)

Codemasters did absorb Sega Racing Studio since Dirt 2 was well into development, so maybe their influence can bring some semblance of car-yness to Dirt 3.

For me Dirt 2 was worse than Dirt 1 in a lot of ways. Even the driving felt different and worse in Dirt2, but I couldn't say that for sure(some years in between playing both). There were less cars, less varied events so IMO Dirt 2 brought brought nothing new but graphics.

Ken Block's word shouldn't count for anything since all he does is fail at everything. He fails at rallying, fails at racing, fails at doing the gymkhana thingy with competition(he lost on his own game at some tournament). All he's successful for is doing drifts and stunts all by himself on open hangars and he needs to do 40 takes for every 100 meters. I was pissed that he had more protagonism in Dirt 2 than Colin McRae himself. I hope that Dirt 3 isn't the case, because he's example to no one IMO. Also, he looks really stupid with that hat on LOL

About this game I seriously hope that it'll be a little bit more realistic than Dirt 2, it certainly looks awesome. Waiting for the demo.....

I don't know about him or his career, but I do know a professional rally racer backing a game that has it's handling bested by the likes of the original Hydro Thunder shouldn't be listened to.

The funny thing is I've actually regained a lot of fun with the first Dirt (on PS3) and now the second (on PC) which I had lost since the excellent CMR2. I feel the handling has gotten a lot stricter or at least gives me much better feedback (perhaps it's not quite CMR2 standard), the pivotal effect does seem lesser compared to CMR3 and 2005 and I really enjoy the inclusion of other the racing types. In Dirt2 I especially like the mix of close racing in rally cross (it was in CMR2 too but not worked out as well) and being able to jump to big off-road jeeps in rally raid. 8man rally cross games can be tense and good. And they can also be a right mess.

I think the difference for me with CMR games since 2 might as well be that I do a lot of online Dirt2 racing now and find it's quite a blast. There are a lot of points which I feel need to be addressed, but they are more to do with interaction design (jump in an online session already racing and you can't pick a car, no idea which version of a race you're doing; Chapel Run or Hairpin Run? Domination or Last Man Standing? very limited time to chat in between races, can only mute people AFTER a race not during etc), which actually bothers me more then the handling. Maybe I've just grown used to the pivotal focused handling now and I know what to expect.

It seems ironic that Colin('s name/rep) has very little to do with the games nowadays and I don't even like the rally part in Dirt2 all that much. It's shortcut heaven. Perhaps they should drop the McRae name completely on this series and use it on a different "hardcore" rally catered game (more like the Richard Burns game) and keep Block and pals for the "Americanized" version that Dirt has become. Even though I understand rally is getting a bigger role in Dirt3.

Wow, what a load of BULLSHIT!

Gotta hate marketing like this. Game is actually looking pretty cool, it's not a true rally game, but it's looking good. But that doesn't change the fact that video is full of crap.
