Frontlines demo and interview

Frontlines demo and interview

THQ and Kaos Studios today released a multiplayer demo of Frontlines: Fuel of War, to be released on the 29th of February on PC and Xbox 360 (while the PS3 version was cancelled). We have an interview with the developers, thanks to XCN, and a gameplay video from the demo. Recording gameplay without putting people's gamertags on video isn't the easiest thing, so be ready for some insane editing. The interview covers everything from DLC to platform comparison, so check it all out inside.

Have you played the demo? You see people all the time. The maps aren't huge - smaller than BF2 maps.

It's a fun demo, but the graphics seem poor (maybe it's an old demo, this video seems to be much improved). I may trade a couple of old games towards it, but i wouldn't pay the full £40 for it.

Of course you do, but 8 out of 10 times its your own teammates.

The new Multiplayer demo is apparently much better than the SP one. Still downloading here!

Please keep in mind that those segments were from an empty server, I did it to show off the map. It's nothing like that with players in the server.

I did my best to actually avoid the other soldiers, as it wouldn't be fair to put all their gamertags on the video without asking them.

Understandable. Ignore those jumping to conclusions.

edit: quick question. How did the aiming feel? I know some games have aiming precision too tight(Timesplitters) and some are too loose(Halo 1). How did this one feel compared to other console shooters?

I thought Frontlines was canceled for the PS3? If it wasn't, delaying it will lead to almost as many sales on the PS3 as if it were canceled. Stranglehold and Blacksite have shown this. When you delay a mediocre game on the PS3, word of mouth gets around and eventually nearly every PS3 owner learns that the game is mediocre. Same thing will happen here. The single player was very mediocre. It just didn't feel right when I played it. Something was off, the spark that differentiates between the mediocre shooters like Blacksite and the good shooters like CoD4. Some people say the multiplayer is better, but I am not convinced.

if it controls and 'feels' the same then it wont be better then that god awfull single player demo. this game needs at least another year in development. atm there really isnt a single aspect of the game i think is partiularly interesting. even the little toys you play around with dont seem to be that great.

So you didn't play it, and you're still not convinced? Wild.

The game needed a lot of work last time I played the beta on PC, but hopefully they've improved some things dramatically. I had a serious problem with the way ground pounding works in FFOW.. they need to concentrate more on making infantry feel appropriate (mostly movement) before I'm 100% sold.

The game has a lot of original ideas that do make it stand out (class versus roll, frontlines mechanic) but unless ground pounding works, it's a bit of a wash. I don't ever see the campaign being particularly compelling, this game is more of a multiplayer only shooter with a story and a sandbox mode that basically plays out like a series of mutliplayer matches with bots. It may be okay but the focus here has obviously been on MP.

Oh and the PS3 version was indeed canceled.

A *year*? That's just crazy talk. Adjusting and tweaking ground pounding shouldn't take a whole freaking year. They've done all the heavy lifting all ready, it's down to community feedback, and tweaking for gameplay and balance. This has been in open beta for months, there's no way it needs a year in development.. but I do agree that it's far from done.

And there are multiple aspects of the game that are indeed interesting, it just doesn't matter when it's loaded with flaws. The odds here are pretty much stacked against KAOS. Drone tech is sorta interesting, but it's the frontline mechanic itself that really stands out--that and the ability to mix and match rolls and classes.

32+ players with dedicated servers, and large scale vehicle combat don't hurt either. It's really a shame that ground pounding is/was so broken last I played FFOW, because the vehicles are fantastic. They have the best tanks since BF2.

I'll probably be sticking to COD4 for a while too (325 hours and counting) but I'm dying for a new BF game.. I was sorta hoping this would at least hold me over 'til BF3 eventually shows its face. At this point, I'm not so sure it will live up to those expectations but I'm still hoping they manage to turn this sucker around.

You guys are right, I even read it myself back then, so many games popping around in the head. Thanks for the heads-up.

@GritGFX, I can be unconvinced by a game even if I don't play it. I know how the game handles and feels from the single player demo and I have seen some vids of multiplayer, so I can pretty much understand how multiplayer would be like. Anyway, thanks for clarifying about the PS3 version. I was sure it was canceled but this interview made it seem otherwise.

looks good but it still needs work, but just like halo 3 beta given time the final product will be much better. Its not fair to judge a game that is unfinished.

I thought the Single Player demo was a lot of fun except for the poor aiming precision. The reaction time seemed very slow, but that could just be a large dead zone on the sticks. If they fix that, the gameplay and fun factor would be vastly improved IMO.

I played a session, 32 player server, pretty good ping based on the bar.

It's OK, but I won't be getting it. The gameplay still felt somewhat clunky as it did in the SP demo, controls could use work, and a lot of small things like animations and transitions were pretty bad.

My main problem with the MP side of the game was the balance issues. The drones are all way too useful and way overpowered. I realize there's supposed to be counters in the gameplay, but they really do break it. There's a lot of ways they could have made that component of the gameplay work better, but they didn't do it.

The SP demo was worse though, AI shooting right through solid walls that you could tell they weren't supposed to (unless the enemy is supposed to have xray vision and shoot through 2 feet of solid concrete).

It doesn't compare to something like BF1942 or BF2, or even Joint Ops (which was awesome but extremely laggy and buggy).

I think EMP tech counters drone tech pretty well. EMP tech was my favorite roll in the beta.. it's great against vehicles and drones, and prevents drones from displaying your units on the enemy radar as well. EMP tech, along with a anti-vehicle rocket is brutal against tanks.. plus drones aren't particularly hard to kill on their own either.

I found them not nearly as effective as simply choosing to play as a drone user myself. The anti vehicle rockets were a better counter against drones than the EMP techs, I was taking out many drones. Am I mistaken or do you not get points for destroying drones though? Personally I think if you're on foot and see a drone you should be able to take it out with machine gun fire and grenades, because I was pummeling one of the land drones at one point with several lobbed grenades and direct fire, and then the drone just turns around and kills me and keeps on going.

The basic combat seems somewhat funny to me. Like when I was sneaking around corners with either the shotgun or submachine gun and I got in a 1on1 firefight with someone I'd always lose. However when I went prone with something like the heavy machine gun (I forget what they call it exactly), I was getting tons of kills without opposition, also sniping was very effective.

In a nutshell, if you have a good gaming PC then buy it for that, if you have enough money then buy for both (PC/360!). Found the textures and draw distance the only thing different from the PC version and tbh that goes a long way with this type of game.

I liked the game more so for the PC and yeah it can look a bit muddy etc, the movement of the guy isn't as fluid as BF2 and sniping i found that i could unload a full clip prone on some1 stood up in range and nothing happen! The good thing about this company is that they listen to what criticisms the gaming community have with the product so i think this is gonna be a purchase on day1 only because i know that it'll updated on a regular basis (just go over to Gamefaqs and you will see one of the devs asking people what they think of the game).

For XBL this is a huge step in the right direction. We need proper PC Battlefield like games for the console with dedicated servers. BF42 had 32 players in what, 2002? It's shameful for MS that we dont have more of these as its ultimately THEIR FAULT (closed system, not allowing freely distributed x86 dedicated host runtimes to interact with live clients, making it impossibly expensive to run enough dedicated servers worldwide).

This is the closest thing to BF2 PC we've got on the 360, which is ironic considering we already have BF2:MC on the console.

Oh and people saying "its not COD4".. THANK GOD! No, its NOT just a glorified 10 year old Quake3 Arena in a small map without vehicles or much anything warranting its excistence except the lack of consumer imagination. You are correct.

Can everyone AGREE that the top games like Halo/Forza and other shooters need to be on dedicated servers ???????

Not all online games... just your top sellers
Commented on 2008-02-12 20:48:51
As much as i love COD4 i have to agree with Joergen in that the 360 needs dedicated servers and its own BF.

Live should have dedicated servers set up by MS, considering PSN has them and that's free.

Jigen, don't bring up the "free" part about online service.
You get what u pay for. Sony has NOTHING on 360's setup. Ps3 may not lag but everything else is below avg when it comes to games, controllers,no arcade etc.

I own both 360 and PS3, and Sony certainly has a LOT on 360's Live even ignoring the fact that it's free.

No arcade you say? What is pixeljunk monsters then? What's SuperStardust HD? PS3 has good games too, Uncharted and Resistance for examples...
