Sony has finished off their GamesCom press conference, the big "surprise" was the already so rumoured Playstation 3 slim. ~30% lighter and smaller with almost the same specs and features, and a release on September 1st. There's an image inside with more over at the official Playstation Blog Flickr page. Other system announcements were Firmware 3.0 and removal of the "Install other OS" feature,
Sony press release:
The system will become available in Japan on September 3, 2009, at a RRP of 29,980 yen (including tax). With the introduction of the new PS3 system, SCE will also reduce the price of the current PS3 with 80GB HDD to a RRP of US$299 from August 18 and €299 from August 19. Also in North America, the price of PS3 with 160GB HDD will be reduced to a RRP of US$399 from August 18. By launching a vast library of exciting and attractive software titles for PS3 this holiday season and offering customers a line-up of hardware models and pricing to match their preference, SCE will build on the momentum and further accelerate the expansion of the PS3 platform.
The internal design architecture of the new PS3 system, from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism, has been completely redesigned, achieving a much slimmer and lighter body. Compared to the very first PS3 model with 60GB HDD, the internal volume as well as its thickness and weight are trimmed down to approximately two-thirds. Furthermore, power consumption is also cut to two-thirds, helping to reduce fan noise. While inheriting the sleek curved body design of the original model, the form factor of the new PS3 system features a new meticulous design with textured surface finish, giving an all new impression and a casual look. With the compact body and casual appearance, the newly introduced model will appeal to a wider audience who are looking to buy the best entertainment system for their home.

It's a damn sight uglier than the original though, but atleast it's still not as terrible looking as the 360.

PS3 + Uncharted 2 + GT5 = EPIC!
I have a ps3 atm so this doesn't affect me very much.
At least with the finish it won't need polished once a fortnight :P
EDIT: Nevermind, just seen it for £249 on Argos' site via hotukdeals
I brought my 360 arcade + 60GB hard with 329 euro's.
the PS3 is official the cheapest console on the market.

Either you are full of shit, or are being massively ripped off...Either way, your statement about the PS3 being the cheapest console on the market is flawed.
Edit: Oh, I see it's gone down to 329 Euro's now, with 60 GB harddrive? Nice try...
Also, the Wii is still cheaper and the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube (also consoles!) are all cheaper...
I do agree with Jato actually though, this one doesn't look that great. Hopefully the thing looks better IRL.
Seriously MS need to get people running their company with a tiny bit of intelligence about them. Every stratagy they push they create something to conflict against it. The core at £99 was an ideal enterence fee for the casual gamer yet to invest in HD gaming. It was priced below the wii. Rising the price will do little to tempt them. MS have also spent this year largely investing in their DLC scheme.. game's on demand, exclusive dlc, summer of xbox live arcade... all of which require a Harddrive. Yet rather than having all consoles have a hdd as standard they go and eliminate their cheapest console entery with one - crazy.
With the ps3 slim coming in at £250rrp (cheaper on the net), and existing models surely reduced lower to get rid of stock (already being seen with store deals.. asda has an 80gig ps3 with 2 games for £250), just how does MS think raising the price of the core, and having the ps3 only £50 more than the elite help them with sales in europe for the rest of this year?
360 Prem = 250 EU
360 Elite = 299 EU
And thats if they dont get dropped further in the next few months.
But, it's the entry point that makes the 360 "seem" like the best deal to the masses...and that gives the 360 an edge, like it or not (I know I don't!)

With built in Wifi, Blu-ray, 120 GB HDD (easily exchangeable for most 2,5" disks)
and better exclusive games this year and next year.
250$ or bust.
250$ or bust.
But when the hell are they going to remodell that fu*king 20-year old controller from the ground up?!
P.S. when is MS press conference?
The ones "saving" £100 by getting the core system will soon cotton on at all the little additional fees you do need if you're to get the most out of your games.. harddrive, live.
And frankly the ones that are going to be doubling sonys sales now will be the millions of ps2 owners that have been patiently waiting for the price drop.
