Xbox 360

Today is Bungie day, and to celebrate this they launched a new map for Halo 3 and some extra content on the Marketplace. The map, Cold Storage, is a remake of the Halo CE map Chill Out and is available for free. We captured a video of it and did some screens, and more information can be found inside.

Microsoft/Bungie press release:
“7/7” has long been heralded as “Bungie Day” by the Bungie fan community. This tradition was born in part due to the significance the number 7 has played in all of Bungie’s games over the years (including the Halo series – which happened to involve 7 Halo rings, “343” Guilty Spark, Master Chief is Spartan 117, etc..). For more information, check out the Halo wiki on the web, the number of references to seven in the Halo Universe is quite staggering. (http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/seven) In many ways, seven is the ‘official’ number of Bungie, if such a thing existed.

This year, 7/7 will bring a few special treats to fans of Bungie and Halo but some are only available for a limited time so you’ll need to act quickly…

Commemorative Gamer Pics – on 7/7, fans can download 7 exclusive gamerpics, for free, from Xbox LIVE Marketplace. These are only available for one day and then they’re gone forever.

In addition to the pics, you can also obtain a special Bungie Day dashboard theme to adorn your Xbox 360. This too is only going to be available for download on 7/7.

Cold Storage, an update of Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer classic, Chill Out, will be available to download for free. The emptied Forerunner research facility serves as a grim reminder of how even the best laid plans can fail. Warmly crafted, dutifully beautified update of Halo: CE classic multiplayer map, Chill Out. Love, Bungie".

Once, the Cold Storage facility was a vibrant, active research center on Installation 05. An accidental contamination resulted in an unforeseen outbreak, which compromised the Forerunner center. Now, emptied and silent, watched only by a local caretaker, the abandoned structure serves as a reminder of how something as powerful as science is ultimately beholden to nature.

Starting on 7/7, the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack will be available to purchase a new low price of 600 points. If you’ve yet to experience this epic collection of multiplayer battlegrounds, the time has never been better.

4th of July Weekend kicks off a special “Fourth of July” playlist where players can earn double-XP competing in a variety of Halo 3 gametypes (7/3 – 7/7).

On 7/7, the “Icy Treats” playlist is released which consists of all Cold Storage games (the new Halo 3 map) and offers double-XP. (7/7 – 7/9) Members of the Bungie team will be playing throughout the weekend so you may encounter one of the Halo 3 developers on the battlefield.

On 7/10, a special “Fiesta Double-XP” weekend kicks off, with Fiesta gametypes (random weapons) offering some unpredictable antics. (7/10 – 7/14).

WTF is up with these images? Whoever recorded and took these screenshots has their darkness WAAAAY too low and their sharpness too low.

Loads of jaggies I don't have and way darker than my image. Just look at the screenshot of the Flood Containment room, then go compare it with the screenshots on Bungie.net

My screen creates a matching image quality as the images on B.net - sort your screen out Gamersyde! Poor poor quality. Map is FANTASTIC btw (though only for FFA, Doubles and 3v3 gametypes.)

I DL'd it this morning- it's a very bright map. I would even say that it's definitely one of the best 'remake' maps that they've done. It feels very much like a forerunner base- as far as the cold steel and the lighting is very similar to the feeling you got from the first halo.

And it's FREE!!!

So... whatever passive aggressive 'snarky- I'm so kewl' comment Furious One was hoping to instill in readers seems a bit stupid. The map is a very nice addition. Can't wait to see it in ranked rotation.

The maps easily one of the better looking ones in the game, really tempted to buy the legendary pack aswell but i get the feeling those will be free soon enough.

Free stuff is always good but i'm not really impressed at all, it actually does look like a game from the original Xbox. Very dull and uninspired too. Here's hoping if we see a Halo 4 that Bungie actually updates the game to be comparable to other games from this generation.

It looks FAR better than those shots phanto, it looks immensely good. It looks like this:

For some reason, the quality of those screens from Gamersyde are terrible. VERY dark and low sharpness. The map looks exactly like those screens ingame :)

I'm not entirely sure here, but our images were captured in-gameplay while I was playing, while the ones you linked to are from the photo mode. I never followed the discussion that closely, but some people claim the Photo mode add AA and upscale. It can be a reason why you're not happy with the images, but they were captured with a very powerful capture card and I certainly haven't done anything bad to the settings.
Also, many games look much better in-motion than in screenshots, and you should check out more of the captured shots from it.

This thread, for example, and the images there:

(sorry, can't edit my post for some reason)

don't bother downloading the free theme. it's garbage. you'll end-up spending more time trying to figure-out which gears theme you previously had up. what a waste.

Regardless of which paticular fanboy stance you have on Halo, one of the best things about it is the constant support for it. Maps, double points weekends, events.... you just dont get that with other games.

Bungie loves their fans. They hump us and in return we hump them. It's a never ending cycle.

Did you have the 'gloomy' FX on or something? The centre rooms in particular are much brighter when I'm playing. More whites than that dark grey.

Anyway, its free, nothing to really complain about. I need to play it a bit more though to get a better feel for it.
