Images of MLB 08: The Show

Sony also releases no less than twenty-three screenshots of MLB 08: The Show, still very impressive visually. If it plays as good as it looks, it should be a very interesting title.

not into baseball at all, but from the demo and screens etc, this game looks greaking amazing visually.

well im a so so baseball fan meaning i prefer to play baseball video games, go to see it live and watch highlights on sportscenter. But watching it on tv is absolutely painful to me, the only time i can watch a baseball game on tv is the first week of the season and when the playoffs start. But i play the video game a lot and this game seems dope to me, it will be a last minute decision on whether i get this or mlb 2k8, i might actually go to the ratings with this one.

This will be the first baseball game I've EVER bought, preordered it. The demo really great and fun. I enjoyed the gameplay more than The Bigs (only baseball demo I've tried lately besides this one), and of course this game's graphics are the best of any sports game, and up there with the best in any genre.

As far as the gameplay alone, it really feels like real baseball, but that may be partially because the ball is as hard to hit in this game as I had in gym class :X

[edit : one more thing, I don't feel like I'm out of control in batting though, there are some classic baseball games that I feel it's completely random if I hit the ball or not, this one feels dead on basically.]

MLB08 has pretty much been the best baseball game for the past few years, so the gameplay in this one should be solid.

It's not 640p...

Funny, I played the demo, and it looks damn near close to 1080p to me, actually. At the very least, I highly doubt it's 640p.

if that is the case (which i doubt) its one of the damn best looking 640p games i've ever seen.

The lighting is fantastic.. but the overall image quality is sorta meh in screen shots (note: I haven't played the demo). That's not a result of resolution anyway, but most people would doubt that COD4 is 600p too..

the demo looks and plays amazing, and I'm not that big of a baseball fan either. I'll probably end up picking it up.

Actually, no. I can tell that COD4 is running at a lower resolution, although as a game it still manages to look pretty good. It's due to the aliasing and general lack of sharpness that I can tell. When I'm playing MLB 08, it appears to be 720p at the very least to my eyes. Just on a resolution level, it doesn't appear to be 640p.

i played the demo & Visually looks great!!! but just at the pics, exactly like other ps3 games.

I tried the demo a week or so back and thought the game was terrific; it plays brilliantly and looks visually amazing bar some minor jaggies here and there. The animation especially is impressive.

As a UK-based gamer, baseball games rarely get released here so it's great that all PS3 games are region-free as it means I can import it. Looking forward to playing the full game sometime next month.

Even the Beyond3d forum people aren't saying it's 640p, they're saying it's 675p, and basically taking advantage of overscan (not rendering parts of the screen that are typically off the borders on a HDTV).

Personally I wouldn't take their word for it, but it's possible they're right.

The assessment of COD4's resolution has ONLY been taken from SCREENSHOTS, not someone actually playing the game, Halo 3 can look blocky and it's one of the few that's actually been confirmed to run at a lower resolution (640p), COD4 would even look worse in that way if true, but it doesn't.

Better AA and better everything else help (or maybe not--they're both 2XAA).

Well on B3D with regards to COD4 they've only really tested the PS3 version for real. So maybe the PS3 version is lower resolution I dunno.

Personally I feel I can tell pretty well when a game is significantly lower resolution. PGR3 for example doesn't even look a whole lot better in HD than SD (I think it's 540p or something), and Halo 3 did look more jaggy than most but I didn't think about it too much.

I have no trouble believing that COD4 is sub-720p, and your reaction is exactly what I was talking about ;)

Oh and PGR3 is 600p too--and I think it looks way better on a high def. display than it would @ 480p. That's still a pretty decent jump in resolution. As significant as 600p to 720p.

Well I do have trouble believing it. It really looks like a full 720p game or close enough that I can't see the difference. What are you talking about "my reaction"?

IMO PGR3 doesn't look 'way better' on high def. When I first got a 360 I forgot about the HD switch on the cable and I was running it in 480p and while I noticed a huge difference in other games, PGR3 didn't impress me with that jump as much. There's a difference, but I wouldn't call it 'way better' like a lot of other games.

BTW, the jump from 600p to 720p is smaller proportionally than the jump from 480p to 600p. It technically should be way more noticeable. Basically my stance is 480p to 720p is huge, while 480p to 600p wasn't huge to me.

Your reaction = "but most people would doubt that COD4 is 600p too.."--which was my original point. Go ahead, find someone else who has counted the pixels and come up with 720p or something, and then get back to me.. I'll believe the efforts of B3D over, "it looks like 720p to me."

Except I doubt it based upon a position of knowledge and not of ignorance.

Why do you assume the people on Beyond3d have some sort of advanced knowledge? They do have some brilliant people, but the brilliance doesn't rub off on every other poster. I don't want to go too offtopic from MLB08, but I can bring up many specific instances of people there being wrong about things. It's fine if you don't want to do any of your own research or learn anything yourself, but don't try to discredit me because you simply choose to believe someone else.
