I'm not a fan but it is a huge gaming series amongst nintendo fans

Similar to halo, metal gear solid, tekken

SSBB is a very high profile game . I'm sure if some games were to be named exclusive for nintendo, SSBB will be there

I tried it on the gamecube as i was a big fan of power stone and wanted a similar gaming experience. It was fun, but not what i expected. But it did have so many characters from other nintendo games, unlockables, arenas and goodies

The game kinda brings together characters and levels from many other famous nintendo games, that's another sell point for gamers

Yeah i don't understand all the hype myself, these games are fun as a drunken party game but that is about it really I remember seeing a poll on GAMEFAQS.COM that asked about the favorite fighting game series and the ssb series won the poll with a huge margin, i found this strange since it isn't really a fighting game and more of a crazed party game.
I have no idea why this is the second most anticipated wii game right now, it's not even on my list.

I think it's just too "difficult" for most people. They just spaz around and expect to have fun with it as the party game it's mistaken for, and when they're not having fun they start to wonder.

Fact is, if you're good at this and face someone else who's good at it, it's fucking insane.

Difficult???? eh....no it's VERY shallow compared to a real fighting game, and that is just the problem with it, it doesn't have much substance.

Like SimonM7 said, , if you're good at this and face someone else who's good at it, it's fucking insane. To me, if I play alone, a real fighting game like Tekken or Dead or alive... feel bored. Allways the same and the fighting rouds too short and meh. Makes me say: "that´s all?"
There´s plenty of things to do in smash bross, hiden characters and a huge amount of trophyes to obtain, and the multyplayer mode, especially with 4 people, is awesome
Tekken and DOA are excelent games, but each person has his own perception about the games and everithyng
(Sorry, I´m from spain and writing in english the best I can)

Na me and a few friends played it aroun mine on the cube when it first come out, enjoyed it for about 15 minutes until we relised it was just shallow and boring.
I for one dont get it either, but as long as other people enjoy it then thats fine by me .

Still think nintendo are spamming though lol

Hit the nail on the head. I too, was looking for a similar experience to Powerstone as that will always be the best 4 player party/fighter ever. i was in great confusion as to why SSB was deemed the best multiplayer fighter on the gamecube. I still dont understand why it still IS deemed a great multiplayer fighter.

I'm not in a million years saying it's a Virtua Fighter, but the feeling you're getting from it - that it's shallow - is brought on by the aimless flailing at other people who are aimlessly flailing.

If you play it against someone who knows what he's doing, and you yourself have everything under COMPLETE control, the game can get incredibly intense and that's when it's also incredibly fun. It's just that people always mistake it for some one button mash fest and they'll never get anything out of it that way.

Look up some real fights on Youtube and see for yourself how nail bitingly action packed it can get, and everyone still has 100% control of what they're doing, deliberately saving themselves in the last split second.

Well, I didn't like the N64 one at all, but I loved the Gamecube one. I loved earning the trophy prizes. I loved unlocking things. There was a LOT of things to unlock in SSBM. That was the biggest draw for me I think.

The game is honestly really simple. It's not exactly shallow because you can combine the simple elements into strategies, but I can't see how people can stand it for actual tournie play, because the results of these actions are fairly random. A good item might drop down by you that allows you to win.

Still, it's a fun game, not in the same way of a traditional fighter where you're trying to learn moves and combos and execute them and you play for the feeling when you beat someone.

If people are wondering why this series is so popular, its a simple answer.
Its a 4 player party style fighting game with and a pick up and play style combat system, which happens to include all the Nintendo characters and now Solid Snake and Sonic.
Believe it or not im actually considering getting a Wii soley for this game. Thats how high profile of a game it is.

Pick up and play yes, but with enough depth to please both the casual and the tourney player.

Wow... Ive never heard oppinions on ssb like this before! People who hate smash or dont understand it are very rare...Usually you have to hate games or fighting games to dislike smash. It's a game with simple controls for quick pick up , but deep enough action that most fighting games cant compare to. If items screw you up, theres a option to turn them off and you can play a match 99 stock, no items and have an all out war! Not to many if any other fighting game offers that. it then boils down to knowledge of all characters and their moves, recognizing animations etc and strategy. The basics for all fighting games. Id say about 2004 is around where I stopped reg playing the game. I pick it up on occasions still even now. It was a game that was meant for parties when 4 people wanted to face each other or do 2 on 2 matches, or settle a rivalry. I'd pick up a good street fighter or KOF game if Capcom or Playmore got their acts together and make a new game. I hated powerstone. It just bored me after playing it for a day. Im not sure what genre that game falls under... but Im def looking forward to the new smash and hope Knuckles and someone from Streets of Rage is announced. Like Axle or skate with updated graphics. Or Leon from Res 4 or Ken from Street fighter. He was on GC with Capcom VS SNK. Anything is possible and they did delay the game.
