Xbox 360

Microsoft started the Games Developer Conference yesterday with a new presentation of the XNA development tools. Just like two years ago they also have shown two new technical demos, and who knows if they will be one day a complete game or not. Images inside.
Do not forget these are demo done to prove how easy it is to develop with XNA, not hardware showcases.

Is there a story behind these? Like how long they took to make or what kind of system resources they require?

They scream XBLA to me!

XNA = Xbox/DirectX New generation Architecture

XNA is a development tool that is supposed to help developers "convert" their games faster for the XBOX 360 and for the PC.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Mahjong game is was originally a game for a mobile device (cellphone?) and they used XNA to easily convert it to the XBOX 360.

XNA is not just a tool to make ports, I believe it can be used concurrently in developing titles for the XBOX 360 and the PC. This is very good news for western developers like Ubisoft, ID and EA who also support the PC with their titles. It's suppose to cut down on their development time.

Sweet. I'm really hoping they do release a mahjongg game for XLA. Unlike card or board games, I can never find anyone to play mahjongg.

Not this one. The game above is called "Pocket-Jongg".

Taken from the response of one of Microsoft's community reps
http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=427627&...

"The Pocket-Jong demo (seen in the screenshots) was originally created in C# for Windows Mobile and through the XNA framework, the developers could port it to Windows or Xbox 360 by just recompiling the codebase (took less than a day)."

I think the demos were showing off the XNA Framework, which is a (still Alpha) set of .NET libraries and runtime for developing titles that are compatible with both the Xbox 360 and PC. The development environment is an enhanced version of Visual Studio .NET 2005, with the addition of a custom build editor and the XNA tools like the asset explorer shown in the screenshots above.

The advantage of the framework is speed and stability. C# and .NET provide for a robust development platform which offers far less opportunity to muck things up than the traditional C++. Features such as automatic memory management are very useful.

My job is writing C# apps, so I'm excited about this. I hope Microsoft will give hobbyist programmers the opportunity to develop apps like those showcased in the demos, maybe with a cut-down version of XNA or something. Us mortals definitely can't afford a fully-fledged XNA subscription, plus the cost of a 360 dev kit ;)
