looks worse compared to Batman Arkham City (similar settings), that was an open world game while this is linear.

Interested in the game though, will buy it for $20 on steam -_-

I'll wait for sales too. I am not too interested about Max Payne games without Remedy.

I'm so interested in multiplayer...not.

Haven't seen anything of the story or writing that's convinced me. Never bought a Rockstar game at full price because of the eventual disappointment, so might check it out on Steam £20 like Mafia 2. But hey, if you're a big shooter fan, it looks pretty good in that aspect.

No Remedy, no sale. True Max Payne fans know that the real magic behind the game was its amazing noir atmosphere.

I've seen enough of this to realise that it won't have that at all.

'True Max Payne fans' makes me sound like a right fanboy. I just mean those who have played the previous games and understand what the series is about... I just can't see this matching up in terms of narrative and noir atmosphere.

You have to at least admit that the atmosphere is not the same - in a bad way. It looks more 'Hollywood blockbuster' than 'film noir'.

Im getting more of a grindhouse wibe from the sao palo scenes, so far i like what i have seen, bit of a shame that remedy lost the ip but i have a hard time thinking of a studio more suitable to take over the series than rockstar.
Also the gameplay stuff they have shown so far looks really really nice, and in the end that is all that matters!

I bought Mafia 2 for full price on my birthday back in 2010 and loved it. It was an awesome game

It's not arrogance, it's respect for the series; this is supposed to be part of the series, after all. It's not exactly a complete disaster - I get that they've got a lot of the Max Payne elements in there, particularly with regards to gameplay (which is the most important thing, I agree) - but the presentation of the story and general atmosphere just seems pretty mediocre based on everything released so far. They just seem to have completely lost that Max Payne 'feel' which makes the game unique.

Dan Houser is a talented writer though, I'll give him that.

Hmm, in certain genres, I agree. Depends on the ambition of the devs, really. I'd say both are equally important in some games, and most certainly in Max Payne. It's great to have both, no?

Everyone who's actually seen the game for real, not a few screenshots, seems to think it absolutely has the "magic." Have fun missing out on an awesome game by one of the best developers in the biz just because the original dev isn't working on this.

I've heard the gameplay and such is good, but the previews I've seen - don't ask me to bring them up, I haven't read them for a few weeks - seemed to suggest that it's lacking the same kind of mood that the series is renowned for. They're trying to replicate it, don't get me wrong, but something's being lost in translation along the way.

I wouldn't miss out on it just because the original developers aren't working out on it though; I'm not that petty, and I don't care that much for Remedy. I would 'miss out' on it because it doesn't look to be worth my money as a Max Payne game. It's easy enough to judge it as a standalone title, but you can't just dismiss the fact that it's meant to be part of a series. And to me, at the moment, it just seems a little generic.

Seriously, I wouldn't give a shit who was developing it if it retained the same magic as the old games. But it's obvious that it's a different developer - and not in a good way.

Again how do you draw this conclusion? I have probably seen/read the same things as you about this game, i still think the change of developer is clouding your judgement either that or you are looking at the old games with some rose tinted glasses, do yourself a favour and replay the old games, i did just recently as great as they are they are still flawed and the narrative is more endearing than actually good.

I don't see why the Max Payne series has to stick with those terms.

The first 2 games were great and still hold up pretty well. But in terms of characters, narrative & dialog I always found them pretty hokey. Kind of like a "good" Steven Seagal movie.

And I still find Max Payne's voice actor pretty dull. But I don't know how, if you liked the previous MP games, this game doesn't look brilliant.

Even if you don't like the direction, it should be a blast to play through.

You can't really use that on me, I played both of them as recently as about 2 months ago. The first one is really outdated now, but the second one still holds up pretty darn well to be fair.

In any case, the narrative is still great in those games. Better than this in what I've seen so far.

My main concern is primarily with the writing. The monologue's we've heard so far are nowhere near as good as the older games.
