Xbox 360 PS3

Sega is revealing the games in SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection one after another, and this time it's Phantasy Star. The collection is planned to be released on the 27th of February on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Sega fact sheet:
Phantasy Star
Year Released: 1987

Now you can experience the game that launched the popular role-playing series. The first Phantasy Star adventure takes place in the far off future in a sector of space known as the Algol Star System. The system is home to the planets Palma, Motavia, and Dezoris, all of which are under the rule of King Lassic. Much to the dismay of the populace, Lassic has turned corrupt, allowing darkness to spread throughout the system. When Nero, a rebel fighting against the new regime, is killed, his sister, Alis, sets out to avenge his death. In the world of Phantasy Star, futuristic technology combines with old-fashioned magic to create a unique experience. Travel across worlds and brave the 3D dungeons to bring Lassic to justice.

Did You Know?
- A graphically enhanced version of Phantasy Star™ was the first title released in the Japan-only SEGA Ages™ series.
- In Japan, Phantasy Star™ was re-released on both the SEGA Mega Drive™ and SEGA Saturn™.

Phantasy Star II
Year Released: 1989

Far off in space lies the Algo Star System. Orbiting the parent star, Algo, are three planets: Palm, Mota, and Dezo. Palm is a planet for the elite - the thinkers and rulers of the system. Mota is a peaceful farm planet that is like a tropical paradise. Not much is known about the mysterious dark planet, Dezo. Ages ago, a woman named Alis fought to rid Mota of an evil being named Lassic, and now trouble is brewing on the planet, yet again. Vicious animals have appeared and something bad has happened to the planet's controlling entity, Mother Brain. Only Rolf and his friends can discover the true cause of this chaos.

Did You Know?
- The U.S. box art for Phantasy Star™ II depicts lead characters Rolf and Nei not in their usual anime style, but as shockingly older versions of themselves. Nei's long ears have also been transformed into horns.

Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Year Released: 1991

You are Rhys, prince of the Orakian kingdom of Landen. On your wedding day, you're set to marry the beautiful Maia, a mysterious woman who washed up on the shores of your father's kingdom. In the middle of the ceremony, however, a winged dragon bursts in and takes Maia away. The goal of Phantasy Star III isn't merely to save Maia. Your adventure spans three generations of characters, allowing you to eventually control Rhys's son and grandson. Along the way, you'll encounter fierce monsters, travel to different planets, and befriend a cyborg that can transform into multiple vehicles. Can you survive the Generations of Doom?

Did You Know?
- There are four different endings to the game, depending on which characters you marry at the end of each generation.
- With its different feel from other Phantasy Star™ titles, some fans consider Generations of Doom to be the black sheep of the Phantasy Star™ family.

Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Year Released: 1994

One thousand years ago, a planet called Parma flourished in the Algo solar system. The citizens there led fulfilling lives devoted to art and science. That is, until a series of disasters struck and the planet's control system, Mother Brain, was destroyed. Almost the entire population was wiped out as Parma's society collapsed. Now, life has come back to the Algo system, and people are once again rediscovering the old ways. The growing contentment may not last for long, however - an ancient evil is preparing to rise again. Once again, it's up to you to save the world in this final SEGA Mega Drive™ Phantasy Star adventure.

Did You Know?
- When Phantasy Star™ IV was first released, the retail price was almost £67!
- Phantasy Star™ IV was the last turn-based Phantasy Star™ title released before the series went online in the aptly-titled Phantasy Star™ Online.
- During Phantasy Star™ IV's earliest design phases, it was planned as a MEGA CD™ game.

Could almost buy this only for Phantasy Star IV...it's that good :) PS2 is nice as well, if you can stomach the combat en insane dungeons. Part 3 is a complete heap of shit though. The generation system is really cool and some of the music is nice but everything else is just terrible...the combat, the dungeons, the graphics...bleh!

A bit of a lol at pic 6...how the f*** do you manage to die in a fight agains 3 xanafaluge? It's virtually impossible :P

I think it was established in the last post relating to this game that it would be optional.

Just thought I'd add that Phantasy Star 1 is actually a Master System game and it had cool 3D dungeons for its time! :D (I never finished it though because I didn't actually have the game myself, my cousin did.)

Corellian rogue: Well it was actually re-released for the genesis in 94. And again in 98 in the PS collection for the saturn. Oh and then there was the remake on the PS2. But yes, originally it was a master system game.

Well, they should probably turn it off for the screenshots so we aren't all looking at a blurry mess.

That's all they'll remain for me I'm afraid.
Most games just don't age well.

Poor SEGA trying to find their old way.
They should just keep making Yakuza games, they are awesome and brings a lot of respect for SEGA.

I usually don't mind the smooth filter unlike most people, but I have to admit it does make the images look a little blurry.

It's nice that they've confirmed the original Phantasy Star. Only have the sequels would have been very silly.

I dont understand the hate for PS3, it was my second favorite in the series. I saw all endings and even tried to max exp in the title.(I spent over 1000hours before beating it the first time.

As for this news, looking forward to it. I love smooth filtered games and it will make these titles playable on a HDTV. I really want a remake though of the games, not just a rom port on a collection disk. What I would give for a Full HD remake of PS4.....

RuneX: well part 3 suffers from shitty graphics, a pretty bad combat system and very repetitive dungeons. Like i said the game have a few bright spots but hardly enough to warrant a playthrough. Also i hope those 1000 hours are a typo. No way does the game have content to last for 1000 hours.

Nope, not a typo.I cleared it with every character(4 endings or so) and did my best to max out exp and fol.(in terms of numbers, not levels. And unlike FFIV which was pretty easy to to get 999999999 exp and gil, they have a few extra digits in PS3) And I found the graphics to be the best in the series. It certainly had the most detailed characters. The only flaw I found in 3 was the dungeons which could be aggrivating at times.

Wow, that's some obsession you have there. Also it's mezeta, fol is Star Ocean :P
Most detailed characters? Did you even play PSIV? Sorry man i just can't take somebody who plays a game like PS3 for a thousand freaking hours seriously. It's a mediocre game in almost all respects and widely seen as the shittiest of the four (for good reason)...that said i can think of worse games to be sure, it just doesn't live up to the standard set by it's predecessors. I would assume a completely different team made generations of doom as well.

The first two Phantasy Star games (and the old DOS version of Wizardry) are the only RPG's I've ever beaten, and I loved every minute of it.
I agree that part III was pretty lame, enough that I decided not to buy it which surprised me.

By the time part IV came out, I had pretty much lost interest in RPGs but playing it I could tell it was as good, if not better than, the first two.

Maybe one day I'll get in the mood and tackle PSiV, but I don't see it happening.
If I do, it won't be with that crappy filter :D

haha, yeah, meseta it was. I always forget the currencies in games, especialy ones I havnt played in a while. That and I have Star Ocean on the brain it seems. As for the detail in teh characters, Rhys was far more detailed than the characters in PS4, in the overworld map that is. The overworld animations and such were much cleaner and more detailed in 3. ITs the only area where 3 had an advantage over 4 to be honest.(PS4 is my favorite of the series, I just happened to like 3 a lot. Then comes 1, then 2. I just couldnt get into 2, not really sure why. )

As for why I spent so much time on it, back when that game came out there wasnt a lot of competition in the RPG field. Im a bit obsessive compulsive as well, so I just had to try and max it. I did fail though as that just took way too freaking long. Unlike FFIV where I made sure to max everything out when I was farming pink tails. (which ill note was a far less enjoyable experience than PS3)

I thought hte idea of choosing yoru bride and having children was quite brilliant. But I digress, regardless of what people do or dont like, I think most here will agree that this bundle is actually gonna be pretty nice.
