When did i say anything like that? Not that i think there's anything wrong with tryig to immerse yourself in a game either, in fact i think it's rather much so a preferable thing. If i can manage to actually connect with the character on screen the gaming experience will be all the better for it, wouldn't you say?

Yeah, but you can have great games built around the "one new gimmick" e.g. Alan Wake, The Darkness, Half Life 2. It's all about execution of the gimmick, and how well the game is designed around it.
You can however, have games that throw in typical shooter, but add a new gimmick, and don't take advantage of it to its fullest e.g. Timeshift, Fracture, Haze.
Isn't that what differs a gimmick from...not gimmick? If you take a concept and really work it in to teh game as a important mechanic it's not a gimmick, it's when you tack it on to your shitty shooter to lure people in but don't really use it well that it's more of a gimmick? A one trick pony?
