The atmosphere in the game looks to be perfect.
I'm just hoping this will be the complete package like i think it is.

You obviously never played the PC version of GTA IV.

Of course in all fairness, not very many people at the time had PCs powerful enough to play GTA IV, much less play it with all the settings maxed out.

What does a sandbox title needs to have to become the greatest free-roaming game ever designed?

Perhaps the following:
-Unique infrastructure that makes the sandbox aspect not just about free-roaming but more about journey and exploration.
-Great story that makes you care about the main character, captivates you with its back drop setting and history and well paced and structured plot.
-Interesting side characters that makes every interaction feel engaging.
-Controlling the main character on foot or while riding or driving should feel absolutely right and genuine to the context of that mechanic. Transitioning between passive, active and action movements should be intuitive and smooth.
-Main missions should be varied enough, keeping the player on track as much as possible.
-Side missions should allow players to get a slightly different perspective on some story elements and perhaps some of its key characters too.
-Every objective in the game should remain true to the context of the story and theme. Every completed objective should give the player the sense of a worthy achievement and progression through the story.
The world in which the player roams should feel like it's a living and breathing place, with a past and present to it.
Multiplayer should allow for co-op, making the replaying of a game give a slightly different experience. Some weapons and side stories should only be unlocked through co-op play.
Last but not least the player should be captivated by how close to real or authentic everything looks.

I'd say Red Dead Redemption comes close in meeting all the above points. It could very well end up as one of the greatest free-roaming games of all times.

If it was bullshots they would have the decency to put some transparency-AA on those trees and the grass.

Sdarts Oh, yeah, I just remembered. Papers, Please does something similar as well. Puts you in an unconfortable position. (6 Hours ago)
  • Sdarts
Sdarts Spec Ops: The Line does something similar, and I wish more games put you on that spot. Try to make you think: "WTF do I do?" and etc. (6 Hours ago)
  • Sdarts
Sdarts Decisions like that. If the game's story is really good, you actually feel the weight of them and how there's no "win" choice, just worse and even worse choices. Some books and movies try to convey it (6 Hours ago)
  • Sdarts
Sdarts @bleachedsmiles: Just hypothetical and nothing to do with the game: Do you blow a school full of children where a terrorist is hiding? Or let him go free to potentially kill thousands more innocents? (6 Hours ago)
  • Sdarts
Sdarts @bleachedsmiles: I can't mention the scene in question without spoiling, but one option was almost impossible and the other was "easy" to do, but the "easy" one was something "monstrous". So values. (6 Hours ago)
  • droezelke
droezelke @Sdarts: I don't know. The shooting felt off. It had mouse acceleration, which I hate. Cover wasn't fluid. But I loved the story. I also couldn't stand the voice of Drake in that setting. (6 Hours ago)
