After releasing a demo on consoles on December 24, Bandai Namco and Milestone are back on PC with a new trial version of Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo. We have to say we hadn't been convinced by the gameplay after trying the game on PS4 but this time it felt much better with a controller. The visuals are quite realistic, though they're clearly not going to blow your mind. Only problem, the framerate seems to be all over the place, despite what the Steam FPS counter indicates (constant 60 fps). To make things even weirder, the replay is a lot smoother than the actual gameplay, which is why we could only capture footage in replay mode. Do not expect great driving, it was our second attempt and the game is pretty demanding.

what's with the music? lol, it's like 80s synthesizers. It's not bad, but it kind of doesn't fit, feels like I should be watching blade runner.

Anyways, tracks look really well made, looks like a real rally road/event.

There is no need for any music in rally simulation game(s). Maybe just in main menu and that's it.

Does this handle as well as Dirt Rally? Can play that for hours. Hows it compare?

Ok so now i've just quickly tried the PC demo... Handling isn't as good as Dirt Rally. It's neither as realistic nor as fun to drive. It's not bad handling though, just not as good or as addictive as DR.

Co-drivers voice is quite poor, the music is embarrassingly bad, and audio on a whole is average.

Frame rate also tanks. I can run Dirt Rally maxed out at 4K with 8xAA with literally a solid 60FPS on all tracks. But with Sebastien Loeb Rally at the same resolution (4K) but lower AA (4x instead of 8x) frame rates drop as low as 35-40FPS with the inside car camera... strange. Can mostly hit 60FPS with other camera views, but still has random frame drops occasionally. Lacks polish overall. It doesn't really look any better than DR either so no excuse for the frame rate.

Seems the consoles struggle with frame rate too.

music is important in every game, even in sim racers, sound effects only are boring, I hope the new devs learn from Sega and from the old racing games on PS1 and PS2, in every Sega game you'll find awesome music not only in their racing games, good music adds to the replayability, sometimes I replay a game to enjoy the music and the game.

No it's not necessarily. It is for you obviously as you keep repeating it. ^^

Professional pilots don't have music on when they drive, you should understand that most sim racing fans don't need/want music. Now the best is to be given the choice, which most racing games do. Sound effects only are clearly not boring though, not for real car enthusiasts.

I agree the option should be there, some devs are clueless and don't the importance of music in racing games like Codemasters, and I don't buy Forza because the stupid devs don't allow me to increase the volume of the music, they force me to hear the sound effects, the volume for the sound effects is much higher, I don't know why they even bother to add music, stupid devs, the music in Forza 4 was awesome but you cant hear anything, that was my first and last Forza.

You can't have music blasting in a rally game, you will be unable to properly hear the co-drivers different callouts for what kind of corner , cautions, don't cut, crest, jump, bump etc that is coming up. Being unable to hear them will land you in a ditch.

As for this demo. It's pretty poor, sound is crap, handling subpar and graphics a mixed bag.

For good fun racing on PS4, get Driveclub. So much fun with long and varied tracks and sweet weather conditions. If you only want rally. Wait till dirt rally hits consoles.

It would be horrible if CM went back to how earlier dirt was. Extremely arcady experiences with gymkana and a bunch of other bloat. Now it's focused semi realistic rally and it's the best rally game since Richard Burns.

Tried the PS4 demo and the framerate is really bad. It drops for no obvious reasons. But it looks really good.

Totally agree. Don't know what xgei8ht is smoking but the older Dirt games were embarrassing. They tried too hard to aim them at kids. So they had stuff like cheesy car stickers/paint jobs and that SUPER annoying yank commentator saying things like "super rad bro!" and "totally awesome skillz dude!!!11!1one". It's like when your grandad tries to act young and cool.

So. Cringe. Worthy.

I hated all of it. I thought DiRT 1 was a piss poor direction for the series but at least it retained the clean aesthetic of the colin mcrae games before it and had a much stronger emphesis on rally. DiRT 2 was just shit across the board really. From it's dumb events which watered down the rally experience, to the cringe worthy commentator to the fucking awful "edgy" X-TREME!!! Sports sticker covered stylings. And all for the sake of appealing to the yank market...The game was such a huge waste of time!

Just had a dabble with the demo and i'm quite impressed. It looks pretty nice, its no driveclub, but nice enough. And its actually half challenging, damage model seem good, even down to getting a flat and the track is long and intense and not 80ft wide. This is from the guys who made the last 4 WRC games right? That series improved a ton by the fourth game and it seems this is the accumulation of all the lessons they've learned so far. Might pick this one up!
