SEGA LAUNCHES NEW MULTIPLATFORM FRANCHISE STRATEGY FOR GLOBAL ICON SONIC THE HEDGEHOG™ WITH SONIC BOOM™

First Ever CG Animated Television Series, New Western Video Game Developers, and Robust Merchandising Program Introduce New Look, New Play Pattern, and Rise of Supporting Characters

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (February 6, 2014) – For more than two decades Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of the world’s biggest gaming icons, with over 70 video game titles, four animated series, and an extensive global merchandising line to his name. This year SEGA® is excited to introduce a new branch of the Sonic universe, entitled Sonic Boom™, that will debut a new look for Sonic and friends and launch their first-ever CG animated television series, new video games for Wii U™ system and Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system and a new toy line. The creative driving forces behind these projects are working together with SEGA to kick-start a global campaign for Sonic Boom™ that will excite and engage new and existing fans across a variety of platforms.

Sonic Boom’s visual identity includes character designs inspired by the abilities and unique personalities of each of the characters while still maintaining the core identity and values of the Sonic brand. The rich worlds of the TV series and videogame will share a common narrative and a number of location and stylistic similarities reflecting full collaboration between videogame, TV series partners and SEGA from the outset.

The Sonic Boom television series, coproduced by SEGA of America Inc. and OuiDO! Productions, will debut on Cartoon Network in the U.S. and on CANAL J and GULLI in France during the 2014/2015 season. The series is an ensemble comedy consisting of 52 x 11-minute standalone episodes packed full of high-adrenaline action. Every episode starts from a small character-driven story and explodes into an epic tale of saving the world, robot battles and more.

Serving as a prequel to the stories revealed in the TV series the Sonic Boom video game will deliver a totally different experience to previous Sonic games with collaborative gameplay at its core. Developed in the U.S by California based Big Red Button Entertainment (Wii U™) and Sanzaru Games (Nintendo 3DS™) in collaboration with Sonic Team, this is the third title to be released as part of an exclusive deal with Nintendo®. Sonic Boom will take advantage of the innovative hardware of both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, with traditional elements of Sonic games, such as speed, also featured. The videogame will also introduce exploration, combat and a new Enerbeam tether mechanic that will allow the Sonic Boom world to be discovered in totally unique ways.

Sonic Boom will be supported by a robust global licensing and merchandising program, anchored by new master toy partner TOMY. TOMY’s line will showcase the new character looks, stressing interaction between core characters, and will feature new play patterns based on both the new game and TV series. TOMY will develop a comprehensive toy range across a broad number of categories including plush, action figures, RC, role play, vehicles and novelty. Sonic fans can expect a high-quality, collectible toy line fueled by TOMY innovation and energized with speed, lights, sounds, motion-activation and action-performance. SEGA will launch a broad licensing program across multiple categories including toys, apparel, publishing, accessories, food and beverage, health and more – making this one of the biggest license initiatives SEGA has undertaken in recent years. The company will enlist many of its current partners who have had tremendous success with Sonic over the past years while seeking new licensees to join this exciting new Sonic licensing program.

“We want to ensure that the Sonic brand continues to evolve and appeal to new generations of Sonic fans and this different look introduces a fresh approach that will be at once both familiar and new to consumers,” said John Cheng, President & COO, SEGA of America. “We are committed to supporting this initiative to provide great entertainment to fans for all aspects of their lives.”

Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared as a videogame character in June 1991 and instantly became an icon for a generation of gamers. Defined by his super-fast speed and cool attitude, in the years since he first raced on to videogame consoles Sonic has become a true global phenomenon with over 140 million videogames sold or downloaded worldwide across consoles, PC’s, mobile phones and tablets. SEGA’s iconic blue blur has also gone on to enjoy incredible success in many licensed areas, such as toys, apparel, comics and animation.

The Sonic Boom TV series is a coproduction between SEGA of America, Inc. and OuiDO! Productions. Executive producers on the show are Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Meir and Jane McGregor on behalf of SEGA, and Sandrine Nguyen and Boris Hertzog from OuiDO!. Other partners involved in the TV series include Lagardère Entertainment Rights for distribution and Lagardère Active TV Licensing & New Business for licensing and merchandise in France.

Aside from the fact that Sonic has blue arms and Knuckles looks as if he's finally given in to the vast amount of whey protein packed on Angel Island.... The game looks... fun.

That being said, I can only accept Tails' and Amy's designs and I haven't played a console Sonic game properly since... since... since... F*ck me! Maybe as far back as Heroes. The last Sonic game I enjoyed was SA2.

Why does Sonic have blue arms? He looks like a bad cosplay of himself somehow.

All of that tape on Sonic's shoes could mean two things:

- Years of running gave him some crippled feet.
- He runs so fast, he has to tape his shoes for they won't fly off.

More likely; stupid design, because mummy-feet is "cool"?

Or a metaphor for the fact that he has seen better days and the tape is in fact masking tape; a quick fix which ironically masks nothing.

.......what have they done. Sonic has a blue blob for spikes along with blue arms and a little antenna on his head, and.... knuckroids.

I've seen a lot of different styles of the same characters and i know it's not easy to upgrade their designs. though I've always liked the idea of sonic having bigger curved spikes.

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs7/i/2005/232/0/d/S_O_...

But more importantly sonic is a hedgehog and hedgehogs are furry; so sonic should be looking somewhat like this by now. http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/0/148...

I wish all of the 3d representations of sonic could get the spikes done right and stop making them look like tentacles. They're supposed to be sharp not flimsy.

Sonic 1 through 3, and maybe Sonic & Knuckles, were great. Haven't played Sonic CD but i hear it's good, but after that? All down hill. I used to love sonic, but i've really lost hope that they'll ever make another actually good sonic game (and i mean good, not passable or "decent"). Too much of the shitty "cool" attitude and crappy skate punk alternative rock involved for sonic to ever be salvaged, and his damn woodland critter buddies ruin it as well. I fondly remember a time when there was Sonic, Robotnick and maybe Tails and a bunch of stages to get through, no city exploring, no human on hedgehog love action, no shadow shooting guns and no Silver being a complete emo asshat. Sonic is certainly a series that needs to get the whole concept of "less is more"; Less bullshit means more gameplay :P

Dude what game ever allowed you to strap old iterations to your new cartridge and play it in an all new way even though it was years old

Also Adventure was the shit, and don't even get me started on all the Chao stuff in Adventure 2

Also a big part of the problem now is that they're so goddamn ADD about Sonic.
Every title they release is like a fucking reboot for some reason, instead of trying to fix what they made and making it work better

Sonic Adventure sucks ass. I remember getting my trembling little hands on a Dreamcast and i could only get one game for it. That game was Sonic adventure. I was so disappointed. Mediocre gameplay and, it was nothing like the good sonic games. I just don't understand why people defend that piece of crap. It's probably the least shite one of the bunch, but it's still not very good.

As for sonic andmknuckles...not many console games did that sure, but you know...expansions? PC games?

How can you dismiss one of the originals for Genesis?
I'm aware of PC ty

Also Adventure 1/2 were different games right, but that doesn't mean it didn't do 3d exceptionally well. It was one of the premiere titles in the launch of the system with nearly perfect ratings

Ok i totally disagree. I don't think they did 3d platforming especially well, and they certainly didn't deliver on the sonic experience that i was hoping for. Slow, clunky and full of bugs, retarded cutscenes/story and so forth. Not good games imo. At all. Don't really give a crap about what reviewers thought about them at the time to be honest. If you like em, good for you. I didn't. Also, the re-releases of the Adventure titles have a more fair score on Metacritic imo, with 50% on 1 and 57% on 2. That's how well they held up.

As for Sonic & Knuckles, i don't know. I just didn't like it as much as the other 3. Not saying it's bad, just didn't like it as much. We can probably chalk that one up to personal taste.
