Black Rock released this new trailer of Split/Second, not showing much new things but at least asking the right question: Can a sports car outrun a building?

Looks great, hopefully it plays well too with gameplay down to skill not just luck, I mean if you are going to take the piss and make an arcade racer where stuff explodes for no real reason... you might as well go all out and blow... eeeverything up :-)

This is the first arcade racer to get my interest since Burnout 2. I'm hoping for a demo though, just in case

I really like how well done the environmental destruction is. It looks like they did a pre-calculation for the physics, giving it a very nice and realistic feel. Nice...

From what deft has told me, it seems like the demo that they've been taking to events is mostly finished... so I think there's a good chance we'll see that same demo on our consoles.

Ditto. Well, most of the Burnout games are awesome. But this looks awesomer. (yeah, I said it--awesomer). As spectacular as the crashes are in Burnout, that boat propeller tumbling down the track is insane!

Yes, but I hope they did it like, say Uncharted, where there a mix of pre-calculated physics and real-time interaction. If you crashed into aforementioned boat prop, and it reacted nowise, then I think the "nice and realistic feel" might be lost. But if it skipped off cars in front of you and bounced around the track--well, that's be a challenge and immensely cool. But if it's on a pre-determined path, then it's like any other obstacle on the track as far as the driving is concerned and can lose its "edge". That's one of the great things about Burnout--the violence on the track is spontaneous, not scripted, like, say, some GTA chases.

We know from games like Half-Life and LBP that convincing physics are essential to immersive visuals and gameplay, so I hope they get this right. Then this *will* be one of the best arcade racers ever.

@phreakinpher

I see where you are coming from, but dude your talking about an arcade-racer so the physics will be messed up. period.

A favorite in the making, no doubt!

That's why there are a lot of conditional statements in my OP. But, e.g., Burnout does fairly good physics *after* you crash, like say Dirt or Grid, so I think it could have some good physics, just not while all four wheels are on the ground :).

What's up?
  • Megido
Megido @Doom_Bringer: do you really think one bad review is going to have that much of an impact on a game that has a 91 on metacritic? (16 minutes ago)
  • Doom_Bringer
Doom_Bringer @GriftGFX: it hurts the developer and sales...are they likely to make another if the game scores bad? Edge sucks (26 minutes ago)
  • GeRaLTo
GeRaLTo @Baleur: 80% of reviews are written by "drones" .Ign, eurogamer, teamxbox, gamespot etc are nothing but companies. Who cares 'bout theirs "reviews" anyway (1 Hour ago)
  • Baleur
Baleur Why are you discussing reviews anyway? When have reviews ever mattered? They are just individual people writing about their individual opinions. Might as well read reviews on music too then, lol XD (4 Hours ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX pfft text! we only care for numbers (4 Hours ago)
  • blmbox
blmbox Yeah, but judging by the content of both reviews, Eurogamer didn't particularly care much for the game anyway. They probably only gave it an 8 to avoid controversy - the review sounded more like a 6. (8 Hours ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX 6 to 8 split on Eurogamer, which isn't quite as large but still pretty significant. (10 Hours ago)
