Super Mario Galaxy also gets some scans from the latest Famitsu, and it should be enough to keep you occupied until Snoopers uploads his video from the E3 demo.

Yeah it's a lighting technique called Rim Lighting. It was used in the Dej Jam games last gen, or in Jade Empire for example.

There are not enough boobs in this game. I think I'll pass on it.

Seriously though Nintendo really knows how to make games with universal appeal.

Actualy, the name of that specific effect is fresnel, as in the fresnel lens and such. Rim Lights are more what Gears of War has.. this is commonly used in Velvet (that is why all look soooooo fluffy!) and metals (as in car paint, since the reflective particles overlap when looking sideways and the reflection gets stronger with incidence @_@)

This is going to sound insane, but this is seriously one of the best looking games I've seen. This is exactly what I look forward to graphically with the Wii - clever stylistic choices instead of just a *more of everything* mentality.

r u sure it's not a falloff in the reflect slot? I think it is. Blim was right cuz that simulates rim lighting.

That princess looks insanely out of place, thought better fit here then in the sonic game... where she was even more out of place.

Other then that, the game looks insanely good. Would pick it up if I ever managed to get myself a Wii.

That is another way of saying "Fresnel" XD .. Rim Lights "per say" are actualy HDR reflections of strong light sources (or "real" specular effetcs.)

In depth, most surfaces have some reflective value to it, but it's only visible with really high intensity light, and LDR light sources don't have contrast enough to do real rim-lights .. so some use Specular/Fresnel to simulate it (Thought, using fresnel is very inacurrate for this, since rim-lights don't always come from the back.)

Fresnel in mario party is being used to simulate the light scattering throwgh the micro-fur on the surface of the objects (like a peach or velvet.) which is an acurrate way .. (in a smaller degree for facial microfur and clothing is also acurrate.)

2nd reason why i bought the Wii, first of course being Zelda

This is a case where art direction is win over graphical power.

After being fairly disappointed with Mario Sunshine and down on Mario games in general I'm starting to really dig this one. It's easily one of Nintendo's best efforts in terms of graphics in the past few years. I just hope the gameplay can match them. Oh, and is that Peach? She looks hot.

Falloff, fresnel, incidence are all the same language to say the same thing. It doesn't just apply to reflections however, any parameter can be driven by an incidence falloff (a lot more options than realtime applications in something like Hypershade or Rendertree.)

Also keep in mind that a rim light could simply be a white colour falling off as the camera's viewing angle to the surface gets closer to zero degrees (cheaper than looking up an HDR source.) Actually I think this is how Nintendo is applying the technique in Mario Galaxy. There's a constant white outline around Mario, obviously there to help distinguish Mario from a black background (space).
