Team Fortress 2: Illustrative Rendering

Valve released this video of Team Fortress 2 explaining why and how they got this so particular look for the game. a very interesting video like I'd love to see more often!

It's pretty standard vocabulary pour graphics developers ;)

more lingo for our fellow posters here!
eg. "wow, i really love that fresnel function on the lambertian shader on screenshot #9" and then you can do all kinds of combinations and always look smart
eg "don't you think the phong break angle on the anisotropic cel shader should have had a greater impact on the specularity of the normal mapping?!" =P

anyways, very cool movie. i for one love to see this techie-geckie stuff behing the fun. and yeah, this game is gonna rock.

awesome stuff. people don't realize the amount of effort it takes to make this art look the way it does...and how much of a scientist must each artist be to get things looking just right.

Nice video, although most of the time I don't really understand what they're saying.

I like the art direction of the game. For me, it really resembles those of Pixar quality CG. Great work Valve!

looks freaking awesome. i just wish it had more then 4 maps.

4 maps, really? Well I guess they gotta make their money back somehow. I mean, this is EA we're talking about. It's a miracle we are seeing this many games selling for $60 given the circumstances.

If I had to listen to that guy talk all day I would kill myself. His voice is so annoying.

will this game run fine with a computer that can run Half Life 2 fairly well? got kind of an old graphics card from 2004 and it runs counter strike source and half life 2 on med-high settings with a low amount of lag. since this game is new, would i need to upgrade to play this or can i just use the same card i have and will it run fine?

About the game

What's up?
  • Melmoth
Melmoth like here (norway) i know people who preordered it, none got it. so they can't have sent many this way. Personally i wasn't planning on getting one, but i feel sorry for those who tried and failed. (7 minutes ago)
  • Melmoth
Melmoth themselves), they should have put out a few more runs to atleast cover the people pre-ordering it. i'm fine with limited time availability otherwise. (8 minutes ago)
  • Melmoth
Melmoth the whole nes-mini thing was lame. i understand they planned it as a limiteds-time release so people could get something cool for christmas 2016, but when they misjudged the marked (which they said.. (9 minutes ago)
  • Tinks
Tinks I stopped trying to make sense of Ninty's decisions a long time ago lol. "This cheap machine prints money? naaaah" (1 Hour ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX I guess it was supposed to be a limited run in the first place.. but you'd think it'd be a pretty easy way to make money too. (1 Hour ago)
  • Tinks
Tinks yeah they certainly decided against trying to meet demand. They probably wanted to focus on Switch demand above all (1 Hour ago)
  • GriftGFX
GriftGFX Or they just didn't feel like it. I have one in the box. I think I'll keep it there for now heh (1 Hour ago)
