The Godfather trailer

The Godfather trailer

Electronic Arts and Microsoft released this trailer of The Godfather on Xbox 360 yesterday on the Marketplace. I also want to announce that I've decided from now on to encode the 720p movies to WMV files using the VC1 codec. Why such a change? There are a lot of (good) reasons: The codec itself is much more efficient than XVID, it's accelerated by a lot of recent graphics card, it's supported (or will be officially really soon) by ffmpeg so it's now available on all platforms as open source, and finally the Windows Media Center owners can watch the videos directly on their Xbox 360. The encoding time is almost 3 times longer than before for me, so this is a big change but I hope everyone will like it. Media Center owners, let me know if it worked!
Update : The media servers 6&8, and the streaming server are finally back online. Yay!

This game doesn't look well. It looks like on XBOX. I guess that only very few people will buy this games.

A+ on the format BlimBlim, not one single slowdown on the vid.

Well, I can't seem to find a codec or player on the Mac, anyone know of one?

Apparently VLC will support VC-1 in the next version, perhaps a nightly or beta is available but I didn't see it briefly checking out their site. Playing in VLC is much less preferable to Quicktime anyway... but at least it would be something.

It will be awful if I can't play your vids anymore! Ack. Stupid platforms. :P

http://nightlies.videolan.org/ should be of help.

Success! Thanks BlimBlim, plays well. QT Player is still better for viewing frame by frame... perhaps a plugin for it will be available eventually. But I don't feel I can really argue since you're using the 360's native format. :D

I'm sure there will be a plugin shortly, now that an optimized VC1 implementation is available with a LGPL license.

How do you set that up. Word is the 360 needs a dashupdate. Can you fill me in on how to set that up.

Great job on the videos Blim.

lazier than a fat guy in mcdonalds, great job EA -_-

with the cost of making next gen games being so high, you'd think they would at least try :<

Just found out you can stream also, by googling. If not for that, I would have hated this, as xvid videos always worked perfectly, whereas wmp videos always played like crap on my pc. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=5...

Graphically not impressive (except the explosions look sweet) characters look like they come straight out of Shenmue. But it looks like a hell of a fun game to play, havent seen so much violence in a long time.

The style really reminds me of Max Payne

Actually looks like you CAN'T stream video unless you have media center: http://www.xbox365.com/news.cgi?id=GGNiuriLGu09021...

Meaning that this update to WMP is horrible as us with less advanced computers can't play the videos smoothly anymore that we could when they were encoded in xvid =(

yes but those with modern pc's can play them even better...

Better get better and the lesser stay about the same... so its an improvement none the less :)

VC1 roxors :)

Thanks Blim, the streaming to the 360 works great, much better display than a transcoded XVID file and by the looks of the file size much more managable to keep around a few good trailers (31mb for a decent length movie is awesome in my book)

As far as the trailer goes it looks good, yeah the graphics don't look too much like a true next gen game but the game itself looks good from a storytelling point of view. I'm going to wait on a few reviews before considering picking the game up however.

Nice bump up over the xbox version and some nice random thing. Nothing to scream about though.

Agreed - this game screams port.

Why can't we have the polish of a port like Burnout Revenge had for the 360?

Blimblim, it works perfectly even better than before HD vids. Thanks for the change, and it works perfectly with my Media Center.

May I suggest h.264 quicktime as an option. QT is much more versatile the MS's very proprietary WMV format (in otherwords mac users can watch videos without going through contortions).

That's not going to happen. Ever.
