Developer Diary PS3

It may be a surprise for some but we've had to wait until today to see the first Behind the Scenes video of The Last of Us. In this first episode, the guys at Naughty Dog tell us more about the infected. To say that this game is highly anticipated would be quite an understatement, but we'll have to wait until June 11 in North America and June 14 in Europe to discover this devastated world.

Your loss.

The subjects in a game says nothing about how good it'll be or how it's going to play.

too freaking excited about this, and with the promis it's the longest game they've EVER made, i'm super psyched to play it. looks amazing. enemies look (and sound) genuinely freaky too.

Potential game of the year - ND need to get back on track after the disappointing Uncharted 3.

Anyone else thinks the graphics have been severely downgraded?

they look the same to me. but the game never had the crazy texture detail of uncharted, which i assume is due to the more open design of the world?

Cant wait. Love that depressive feeling, sort of Im a Legend combined with The Road. Music near the end of this video is just awesome! Honestly...I would buy anything from ND. Even if the would make a Barbie game.

Zombie-
a. a person whose behavior or responses are wooden, listless, or seemingly rote; automaton.
b. an eccentric or peculiar person.

by that definition a person who'd just woke up was a zombie. we all know they're not. just like the rage virus in 28 days later didn't create zombies. not in the traditional definition of the monster anyway. zombies don't have a lifespan for one, these fungal infected do. they die, and carry on the infection via airborn spores. zombies don't do that. it depends on how tight your definition is i guess. if you happily lump together rage virus infected and shambling zombies, and possibly even mummys, then yeah, i guess these fungal infected are zombies too?

"when we added the mushrooms and the clicking sounds you will instantly be afraid now" ...

no. No I wont.
Its just uncharted on a dark corridor. game is still cartoonish, has cartoonish enemies and colours. maybe if you wanted to make a true survival-horror, you shoulda played first silent hill or Amnesia and take from them the cues needed and learn the atmosphere, colours and all things that make our psyche fear a normal polygonal model.

The whole fungus thing can't hide the fact that the game concept is still zombie-ish, yet it's better than all those average zombie games out there. I'm even willing to buy the game if someone would lend me his PS3 for a few days/weeks, same goes for Ni No Kuni, but PS3 owners seem even more egoistic than 360 owners do.

The whole concept about the cordycep fungus infecting humans is a stroke of genius! This is a real life problem for every species of insect in the animal kingdom. It's not beyond the realm of posibility, that someday humans can become infected with it as well. Also, it's Naughty Dog we're talking about, the voice action and graphics, and story is gonna be amazing! I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again, "The Last of Us" is MY Game of the Year! (even though we know GTAV will win the actual award.)

I don't understand why they bothered with a mutation theme. I thought the psychology of constant survival and the relationship between the protagonists would have been enough to carry the game. Uninspiring designs too. Shame.

I'm sure those things will carry the game (we're talking naughty dog here, masters of character and relationship in games), but games like this need a greater evil, in the same way any game can't survive on a single enemy type. Bandits are a bit done to death too, but it's the mix of both, and the apparent intelligence of both that will keep the combat dynamic and fresh... Also, i've never seen creature designs, nor a premis like this. But maybe i missed them?

Well that's just how one can use the word. Generally zombie refers to the "undead". a concept that originates back to African witchcraft cults & such.

In this game a parasitoidal fungus infects & adjusts behaviors of the host human to propagate the fungus.

This infections similarity with zombies is only really coincidental as such fungi' have been around for millions of years, it's just that humans aren't susceptible... yet.

ok...I can respect your opinion on the matter, but allow me this moment to explain a couple of factors...and yes, it's gonna be very nerdy. First off, it's not totally science fiction, because the cordycep fungus does exist in real life. It's a fungus parasite, that enters the mind of insects, and controls it's behavior to infect other insects, of that specific species of insect.

There is a cordycep fungus for every insect in the animal kingdom. The Last of Us is about the cordycep fungus infecting humans. We can't say, for certain, that this won't actually happen for real someday. Also, they're NOT zombies! Zombies are re-animated corpses. In the Last of Us, they have infected STILL LIVING humans. It's been revealed, the infected humans still have their consiousness, but are powerless to control their own bodies, due to the cordycep fungus that entered their minds (just like the insects, in real life.) Of course, it's your loss for missing out on a amazing game.

Naughty Dog already stated that the main theme of the game is about the father and daughter like relationship, between the game's two main characters: Joel and Elle. The infected humans are just apart of the setting in thier Post Pandemic World. The infected represents the dangers the game's characters will face, as they set off on their journey. Just like what KORNdog said, Naughty Dog is well known for their storytelling, about putting the characters relationships in the forefront of their games. Neil Druckman (the game's main director) stated this himself, the game will mainly be based off the relationship of the characters, and about humanity in general.

Wow, I thought the exact opposite. I think the combination of conflicts between the humans as well as the struggles with the infected and how it affects the characters is brilliant. It can only add more depth, and I love the fact that they made it believable. Seriously there are things like this that exist, just not in humans....yet anyway.

I also don't think the designs are uninspired. They were inspired by the look and function of the actual fungus that does this in insects (meshed with other similar fungi). If they went necromorph style I would say uninspired, but using the cordyceps fungus as inspiration, and then using the clicking and echo-location is brilliant, tense, and I think terrifying.

I honestly can't remember the last time a new IP has interested me this much. They look to have blended the best parts of my favorite genres:
1) the great storytelling and character development of linear adventure games
2) the sense of awe and exploration of open world style games
3) the depth of combat and inventory of rpg games
Not to mention the sound, graphics, animation, and physics all seem top notch. I realize everyone has different opinions, but this is as close to any game I have seen to deserving universal acclaim (at least from whats been shown).
