Xbox 360 PS3

Konami released this trailer a couple of days ago, revealing Messi in Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. The game usually hits the stores in late October, and this year will have versions on Playstation 2 & 3, Xbox 360, PSP & PC. The Wii version will be out next spring.

Konami press release:
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced that Argentinean forward Lionel Messi is to be the face of its forthcoming PES 2009 title for PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360, PC-DVD, PlayStation®2, and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), Wii and mobile phones across Europe.

Messi is one of the most exciting and paciest forwards in the modern game, and is an ever-present in both the Argentinean national side and for his club side, FC Barcelona. Having played for Argentinean sides since he was five, Messi moved to Barcelona when he was just 13,13 working his way through the CatalanFC Barcelona side’s youth and reserve teams, before making his full debut in October 2004 as the youngest player ever to play in the Spanish top flight. He made his debut for Argentina against Hungary in 2005, and has been a permanent member of the squad ever since.

As part of the new agreement, Lionel Messi will grace the box of all versions of PES 2009 when it is released later this year, and will also feature in promotional materials for the game. PES 2009 is the latest installment of the award-winning Pro Evolution Soccer Series, and will boast a wealth of extensive new additions to enhance the series’ reputation as the most realistic football game available. The new game enjoys a stunning graphical update wherein its players look and identically to their real-life counterparts, while new moves, innovative control elements and key online enhancements will further the realism of the new game.

“Most modern players are aware of the realism and skill of the PES series,” commented Messi on the deal. “It is a game that truly mirrors the pace and control of real football, and as a die-hard fan of the series, I am delighted to be working with Konami on the latest version.”

“Lionel Messi is an incredibly exciting player, and one who enjoys a world-wide reputation for skill, pace and all-round ability,” commented Jon Murphy, PES European Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “As such, he is the ideal player to front PES 2009, and his enthusiasm for the new game is certain to shine as we work closely together in the promotion of what will be the most advanced PES title to date.”

Konami will be announcing further enhancements and player contributions to PES 2009 in the coming weeks.

PES 2009 will be released for PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360, PC-DVD, PlayStation 2, and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and mobile phones in Autumn, and for Wii in Spring 2009.

Looks like two entirely different games when it switches between the camera types.

I hope they have really made the effort after last year being pretty bloody weak and FIFA/UEFA making massive strides.

I thought KONAMI was talking in nex-gen terms about PES09... but whats with the facial animations? The defenders looked bored at best, almost stupid at some point... look at the end when the striker is about to jump for a diving header... funny

Up close it looks beautiful. From the angle in which you'll be playing the game, it looks identical to Pes 2008.

I really do hate to say it, but Fifa gets my money this year. After looking at the gameplay footage of Chelsea vs. Arsenal, I was blown away.

The time has arrived - Pes has become the new Fifa.

Is this on the PS2 or on an actual next gen console? Konami have completely lost the plot, 2008 was rubbish and i really don't have much hope in this, for the past eight years PES has been hands down my footy fix for each year, this year however i don't think i'll bother, EA have made huge progress and atleast the online play isn't laggy as hell.

indeed EA made a lot of improvement....they have the ability to change a number and people still buy the game even if it is exactly the same only with some texture changes..gogo EA thats the way to make money, you just need to abuse the futeball fanboys blindnesss

PES fanboy huh? :P

There was/is quite a significant difference in last 3 versions of Fifa, and 08 is very solid game. I come from PES background, from back in the ISS days, and admit that Komami has done what EA has been doing for years in their last 3 versions of PES, while Fifa has been improving massivly.

I love PES (not as much as I used to) and I would really like Konami to make some efford to improve PES(WE) since they made so much money of it, but I feel like last 3 versions been quite poor, especialy 2007 and 2008. Say it like it is....

Big hopes for Fifa 09 and PES09, which might be a big one for many fans of PES, since I know I am not the only one disapointed with recent releases, and noticed great improvement to Fifa franchise.

Not bad is NOT good enough. This game needs to be mind blowing good for it to get to where it needs to be. I'm sorry, but I know for a fact that this is a recent build of the game, why else would they show it, and already it looks like garbage. Look at the animations when they run. Reminds me of Hasselhoff running down the beach with them saggy man boobs in slow mo in the Baywatch intro. Look at how stiff it looks. The ball moves like a rock, and the movement of the defenders looks ridiculous. It's like they go into an animation loop then someone presses pause. Watch the keeper at the start. Looks still very much like a PS2 game. Sorry, Konami, but this game just got bitch slapped back to the last gen by Fifa 09, which in it's alpha stages looks incredible. Almost like watching a live match.

This game has gotten worse since PES-5

PES2008 was Diabolical, Im not fussed about graphics, but the gameplay was off.
They also dont do nothin online, same crud every year so far.

I played Fifa 08 and Uefa and have to say, its better than PES, although its still a tad sluggish and unresponsive, if they sort that I think that it will be awesome.
Graphics wise, they have it sorted in that department anyhow.

Anyhow,
Dear Konami,
Stop being lazy buggers and start doing some work :)

It's sad, really sad. I remember the good ol' days of PES, i.e. PES 4 and co on the PS2 - aaaaa, now that was a great footie experience. Unfortunately Konami just can't seem to handle Next Gen technology properly. Whether it be down to their team's structure or the fact that multiplatform development has taken it's toll I don't know, but something has to change soon.

Now it looks as though Fifa finally has the gameplay to match it's gorgeous presentation, and Fifa 09 is shaping up to be one of the best football games ever made. It's sad for us hardcore Pes fans, but at the end of the day we all just want our money's worth and Fifa looks to be promising that this year.

Well played Fifa - you've finally won me over.

Unfortunately, that appears to be the case. Ah well.

The guys over at Winning Eleven Blog have hands-on time with the latest build on the 18th August. If their impressions aren't good (and they're honest over there), it'll be bye-bye PES for this year.
