UE4 Effects demo on Gamersyde

UE4 Effects demo on Gamersyde

Now that people can buy the licence for Epic's Unreal Engine 4, the tech demos available with their new engine have popped up on the web thanks to the magic of NeoGaf[/url]. Since we managed to capture properly the Effects demo, here it is in 60 fps Gamersyde quality. Let us just remind you that the demo is quite old now as it was made back in 2012, so we can expect the engine to be even more impressive today. That being said, this should give you a pretty good idea as to what to expect for the new generation of games.
Update: Elemental demo video added. We captured it at 30 fps so the framerate would remain steady.
Update 2: One last video added.

Effects demo - 60 fps
Elemental - 30 fps capped
Realistic Rendering - 60 fps

You can download this and a few other UE4 tech demos here: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2369/unreal-e...
Pretty interesting to see stuff like particle effects that are very "PhysX" that work fine on AMD hardware. It's all fairly old and as a result not very well optimized or crazy impressive but some of it sure looks nice (reflections in particular).

Wild guess, E3, like Naughty Dog since they haven't shown any game either...

they announced one though and released one last year, we know what's coming. EPIC just seem to be making tech demo's. and as far as i'm aware, havn't shown anything since completing gears of war 3?

Fortnite, plus a new next gen title they have teased without showing anything yet. I think they also spent a lot of time working on the engine itself. Like I said, E3.

Eh, pretty sure this was done by one artist to mess with the engine, and it's certainly using the very base of UE4. Games will modify the engine more and the engine will be pretty different by the time games start really coming to the engine (basically when Epic releases their first UE4 game).
So I don't really think that is what proper games will look like running UE4.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't you saying this crap.
Epic is an engine company. First and foremost. And all they need to make that engine functional is to make a game. Doesn't need to be Gears of War, Halo, Skyrim, etc. It just needs to be a polished final product. Instead of injecting your usual cynicism, try learning a bit about the reality of the situation.
Epic made some games, but they've always made their money from their engine, ever since Unreal.
If you just want games running the engine, there are plenty out there. Even one released (Daylight). And that EVE VR game was just announced to be moving to UE4 instead of Unity (which is what they prototyped the game on).
Games are being made on the engine, but it's super early on and it's the first major iteration they've had in about a decade. It'll take a while to get the engine firing on all cylinders.

I hardly think a demo of the capabillities of a suite of texturing applications/plugins is a very good way to judge what UE4 will do in terms of games.

The quixel applications are pretty sweet though.

All those renderings looks great hopefully next gears of war look like those are.

I want EPIC to show how to use the engine, not just some crappy game released that happens to use it (see daylight). Since the dawn of the engine and the studio, they ALWAYS push the engine further then anyone else (unsurpising considering they made the fucking thing) and that's why i'm waiting on it but feel they're taking their sweet time (we'd seen the fruits of their labour long before this point in regards to UE3). A tech demo means sweet FA in terms of actual development of a game, and some free to play side project isn't exactly showing it off that well either (seriously, it looks like it's made in the source engine). Hence i want them to show whatever it is they're working on. I don't give a shit if the engine is where they make most of their money either. They are still a development studio, so sue me for wanting to see their next product in real game terms.

Yea, me too. Pew pew pew ! Well, sucks for you then.
I sure won't need a new rig to play my 'cave games' :)

Yeah, i dont think you need ue4 to run Dangun Feveron and DoDon Pachi ;)

Nah, theres the elemental demo, this cave thingy and another one called "realistic rendering" or some such. Ran perfect at 60 fps for me.
Commented on 2014-05-03 02:24:53
It's a shame that the elemental demo featured here is the PS4 version. It clearly doesn't look as good as the first PC elemental demo shown. But according to the guys at neogaf we should at least see a new one with GI enabled in the somewhat near future.

None of them were too awfully impressive to be honest. I was really hoping this next generation was going to be capable of true global illumination, but it doesn't look promising so far. Ray tracing? LOL. Maybe in 10 years or more.

And your cynicism is based on what kind of exceptional tech compared to UE4? LOL is inappropriate, you sound like an elitist jerk.

I was laughing about the ray tracing. It's so far off. I suppose at some point during this generation we might see something with true global illumination but most of it's going to be fake. I'm also basing my opinions about the demos by watching them run on my PC, which wasn't too impressive even with a decent frame rate. If I saw the elemental demo with true global illumination I'm sure I would feel different. I just don't see many advances in lighting so far, sadly enough, and advanced lighting above all else is what truly convinces the eye that there is something really there, not fancy textures, not dense geometry.

The two things that I really wanted to see advance this generation were lighting and animation. They are both lacking.

KornDog I don't comment often but I do lurk the comments and i have to say you are one of the biggest self entitled trolls on this site. And you know what EPIC is does not have to show you anything at all.

OT - I love tech demo's and EPIC is doing a great job of showing off what their engine can do by putting it in the hands of artists and creating demo's like these.

You're not going to get true GI or any other feature like it as far as physical accuracy is concerned without a ray trace engine anyway, so I don't know what you were expecting, really. I downloaded these demos and ran them, and for what I seen, I was really impressed. The material properties and the screen space reflections on objects is fantastic, but the rendering and the post IQ is something I've not yet seen before running in real time on my PC. The reflections demo being particularly impressive. There's going to be some absolutely stunning looking games built on this engine in the near future.
