It wouldn't just be pirate software (in fact allowing access to the RSX in PS3 linux doesn't by itself enable piracy) but rather you would no longer be compelled to pay Sony a software royalty to publish on the platform. Effectively it would make it a subsidized PC. Bad news for Sony for obvious reasons.

Though there are probably many people, Grift included who will think the idea of a subsidized PC is a brilliant one!

Oh please Deft, do you really believe that giving guest OS's full access to the RSX would have a serious impact on PS3 game development? Do you think that major developers and publishers are actually going to start making LINUX GAMES instead? Give me an f'n break.. that's ridiculous.

That goes above and beyond the MS apologist attitude that I expect ;)

Now now there's no need to chuck insults about.

Of course 'major' developers and publishers aren't going to start publishing their games that way, they've already signed a ton of agreements with Sony that cover that. They wouldn't jeopardize the business relationship.

But if you're a small indie developer or publisher who isn't already a licenced PS3 developer (that covers a lot of games companies) you would be able to;-

Publish PS3 games without paying the software royalty.
Potentially publish AO rated games on the PS3 despite SCEA not allowing them on the platform.
Avoid along with age rating requirements any form of TRC's, certification or region coding (not that the latter is really a factor for PS3 games mind).

Which is exactly why it won't be allowed to happen. If the RSX bar has no impact on PS3 game development, why does it exist?

Ok grift allowing full access to the RSX would allow someone to make a new XMB OS which could be self bootable, have you even seen how the PS3 handles its second opertaing system ?

Linux on PS3 already allows users to rip blu-ray movies and games with ease, adding RSX functionality would only make this worse.

I understand you may be frustrated about no Homebrew but thats just the way it is, they are consoles after all not PC's.

Allowing full access to the RSX to the guest OS would not facilitate the creation of a PS3 bootloader. You can already rip blu-ray movies with Linux with ease, so I'm not exactly sure how much worse this could make it. I seriously doubt it would have a serious impact on PS3 development, either. Why bar the RSX from Linux? To make guest OS's less fun, I figure.

It would facilitate a media player that would exceed the functionality of the PS3 itself, but I'm not sure why that's a big deal. Lets face it, even with a fully open RSX, Linux would still only appeal to a niche audience. There will be a far bigger impact on the PS3 once the pirates are actually capable of loading ISO's, which probably won't have one thing to do with the guest OS functions.

I'm actually surprised it's taken so long to hack the PS3. With the total exploitation of the PSP, I figured it would have been easy.. and yet the Xbox 360 is the platform of choice for most pirates.

It's really too bad that the original Xbox doesn't have just a little more horsepower. XBMC is basically useless now, since it can't handle high def. content all that well.

I agree on XBMC, they tried to boost things with the DreamX modded Xboxes ( I think they doubled RAM & CPU speed) but only ever got so far with it. Moreover they weren't cheap either.

I always thought PS3 Linux was bootable once you had installed it? I'll admit to having never tried because I'd heard mixed feedback about how usable and how worthwhile it is. It might be worth another look now, the wiki page points to a variety of distros being supported. If it is bootable, somebody could develop an XMB shell quite easily I imagine. Not sure it can boot games though...?

Anyhow I don't disagree that removing the hypervisor from PS3 linux would make it appeal to anything other than a niche audience. The CELL architecture largely takes care of that but that's not the point. It's the possibility of software that might look akin to a PS3 game running without software royalties, or an AO game being released, both via a method sanctioned by Sony that they wouldn't want the aggro/baggage of dealing with which is why it won't happen.

Even niche audiences can be significant enough for paranoid corporations to worry about. Running with Scissors would probably port a n AO rated Postal game to PS3 linux in a flash if the right circumstances arose. I'm not saying it's right, but I can understand the paranoia. Unlike the PC, there is a large corporation with lots of cash at the other end of a console to sue when something goes bad.
