The closing of Pandemic Studios is the latest in a long line of acquisitions and then closures or "integrations" in the company's long history. Over the years EA has acquired and later closed or absorbed employees from Origin Systems, Bullfrog Productions, Black Box Games, Maxis, Westwood Studios and Pandemic's Brisbane, Australia and Los Angeles locations.
I saw this coming for awhile now. EA never seemed interested in Pandemic as the entire acquisition was always about getting their hands on Bioware. They never had anything planned for Pandemic.

I know some will blame this on Pandemic but this is a typical old EA move.

EA is feeling a lot of heat right now. This is only a small part of massive cutbacks that are incoming.

It's very far from typical. EA are just re-positioning themselves. That's of little comfort to the guys at Pandemic of course who are on the end of the same result at the end of the day but the reasons for canning them aren't the same as they would have been for Maxis, Bullfrog etc. It's not like they've tried to make an EA Brisbane out of it. Indeed, they have a more studio centric model these days leaving Bioware alone(ish) and rebranding another internal studio as Visceral Games (Dead Space, Dante's Inferno)

Grift I wonder if they really are as ripe for takeover as many have been claiming. I don't see Microsoft doing it because I don't think that EA's various (and failing) business models are a good fit for them. But someone has to be watching the markets as closely as we are. EA's stock is dirt cheap, it's growth has halted and overall it looks quite vulnerable to anyone with the cash to scoop them up.

It would only be Activision with the cash and I don't see that one getting past the regulators. Massive overlap as well.

Ugh, that would almost be worse than Microsoft...

I just ventured over to the official Pandemic forums, and this is what their admin had to say:
If we can keep this thread from becoming a link fest to other sites I would appreciate it. There is a a lot going on here at the studio. But the fact stands...

1.) These forums will not be going offline anytime soon from what I can see.

2.) Pandemic & its IP's will be moving over to EALA.

3.) I am still working for Pandemic/EA.

Activision? I was thinking much bigger than them. I was thinking multi-globals like MS, Apple, Disney, Intel. You have to realize that EA's market cap fell below $10 Billion and has been this way for more than half a year now. That's just going to be too sweet of a deal for some of these larger corps with cash laying around to ignore. If EA remains in this kind of shape going into the new year, someone WILL snap them up. You can count on it.

It's not a purchase that's going to make any sense to technology companies like MS, Apple or Intel. Some of the bigger, media companies; sure it could happen but I would wager it won't. Warners didn't even want all of Midway, Disney have their own gig going. Sony are out, Universal are tied in with Vivendi and thus Activision leaving only Fox out of the major film studios and I don't see that happening either.

One of the smaller publishers like THQ etc are more likely to get bought this way, or may Ubisoft as they are aligning themselves closer to to Hollywood.

EA are a company that are on a big (and very slow) U-turn. It's doubtful anyone is going to buy into that right now.

From GAF, A Pandemic employee
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1853275...
I was one of the affected today.

Having worked at Pandemic for close to 5 years, it's a bittersweet moment. We literally just finished Saboteur and are extremely proud of the game it turned out to be, considering the amount of hardships we had during development. On the other hand, we now have no job and are forced to part our ways with people we hold dear to our hearts.

I can tell you one thing. The reason why the studio closed down has everything to do with the existing Pandemic management. From what we were told, Pandemic management was given free reign to do as they please. Time and time again, they dropped the ball with bad decisions (promoting/keeping people based on loyalty, no production accountability, misallocation of resources, poor milestone objectives, no mentoring, etc.). It's a true shame, as there was a lot of talent and passion at the studio.

I wouldn't necessarily hate on JR and EA's execs just yet. In my eyes, they probably made the right decision as Pandemic cost a lot to upkeep and, quite frankly, the last few products weren't up to snuff. I think many of you would be surprised how much a game like Saboteur costs to make (think ~100 people for 3 years + ~20 people for ~2 years). Add overhead cost to incompetence in management/direction and you have a pretty convincing case to cut your ties and call it a day. It probably doesn't look good for JR considering he made a cool 5 mil off of the sale of Pandemic/Bioware.

One more thing I will say: EA is totally sending Saboteur out to die. And it's a fucking shame. It's easily Pandemic's best game yet. Of course, I am a bit biased having worked on the game for so long. If you were disappointed with Mercs2 and LOTR (who wasn't) and enjoyed previous Pandemic games, give Saboteur a shot.

Haha, he's not wrong there.

I agree about his argument that EA is 'sending Saboteur out to die' though. I mean, sure it's had the odd trailer here and there but, considering it's just a month from release, I don't think EA has been particularly enthusiastic about the game.

They weren't ever enthusiastic about Pandemic PERIOD. When EA purchased Bioware/Pandemic they cut that deal with Elevation Partners to acquire VG Holdings. And just who happened to be a co-founder and former managing director of Elevation? You guessed it..............John Riccitiello. Riccitiello was greasing the wheels on that deal for the longest period of time and was willing to go through Pandemic to get to Bioware.

Case Closed.
