The competition is good ofc but does it, in the end, really matter which console comes out on top? Unless you are some rabid sony/MS fanboy ofc, but in that scenario all sense of logic just unravels and shreds into nothingness :P

Personally i couldn't care less if the PS3 passed the 360 in sales. As long as i get good games i'm happy.
Both are striving for the Top Spot and that's what creates the competition so it does indeed matter to them who ends up on top.

KORN: I don't think that will happen. If there was such a big gap another player would jump in there with some other console. And i kind of doubt that either Microsoft nor Sony would just sit idly by while the other company reaps the fruit of their three year period :)

Ofc it means something to THEM, as they are companies and they strive for maximum profit, but does it amtter to us as gamers? I just can't see how the general quality in games would be affected by who wins the sales race.

Ah right, Now I see what you mean. You are indeed right, we dont care who ends up on top, we only need them to keep fighting for the top spot but it doesnt mean we cant speculate and try to predict which is the whole point of this topic anyway :)

I don't think MS were intended to be at the top though, although they seem to have lost a lot of enthusium lately, yea the games are still coming but they seem happy where they are and don't need to push themselves, Sony on the other hand could end up gaining if MS doesn't watch there back.

Its hard to predict who will lead at the end of the generation and as Megido says who cares, but I think it will be pretty even between the two.

If I were Sony I would wait 2-3 years after MS release their next console that way they would have a huge advantage in technology and have 2-3 years to take advantage of it before the next MS console appeared.

thats what i think will happen personally. problem with that is MS would then release their console earlier which would trump the ps4's hardware etc...its a vicous circle really. each console would have 3 years to succeed as the hight of technology, but tech means very little on the grand scheme of things, just look at the inferiour psone and ps2 against the technologically superior N64 and xbox.

i dunno. tough call really. i do think MS will ditch the 360 faster then sony ditch the ps3 tho...and i do think it could be a good 2-3 years between each release.

Jolli: the problem with that strategy is that it's a complete gamble. If the PS3 continues to generate sales it's a great move but if it goes the other way and every body just get's the new xbox Sony is in a pretty shitty situation. I guess that they'll always have the japanese market but it might not go as well in the rest of the world. No matter what though things will balance out one way or the other.

Korn could be onto something there, I think it was MS plan to release another console in 2010, but the fact the 360 has done so well and continues to do so, along with the fact that the PS3 is doing so poorly has made MS rethink its strategy and it will now wait longer before the 720 comes to the shop floor (my guess 2012/13), i also think that Sony will skip the nextgen console leap all together and stick with the PS3 (much like the ps2) and flog it for all its worth for as long as it keeps making them $$ and leave the 720 to itself, they gambled big on the PS3/Blue Ray and it burnt them bad, plus depending on what happens with Sony in the next few months with its restructuring, i believe the Sony rep that said they have a 10YR plan for the PS3 and we wont see PS4 untill 2014/16.

Sony may post an operating loss of $1.1 billion in the business year to March 31, instead of its previously estimated ¥200 billion profit, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Sony has not yet revised its forecasts.
While I don't think Sony will ever abandon the PS platform, there could be reason to believe that they would opt out for a 2-3 year period while Microsoft releases another console.

I think it would be very hard for Kaz Hirai or anyone in the SCE division to walk in on Howard Stringer and the rest of the Sony board and sell them anything new for the platform.

Microsoft said they are waiting longer than the usual 4 year life span of last gen as well though

Also it doesn't matter when a console gets released, although 360 being early out of the gate helped a lot I think. It all depends

To me Sony still hasn't learned it's lesson in creating a system that is easy for companies to develop for. It's why the 360 has an advantage still
PS2 had the same issue. Both systems are supposed to be powerhouses but because of how complicated things are, it's difficult to make a great looking game.

Well sure both could survive but man it would be as playing PS2 games now and I need my new technology. I know graphics doesn't matter if the game is good but games would look horrible in 2014. Heheh would be quite funny though, people arguing about Gears of War 7 vs Killzone 3 graphics :P

I still think the graphics we're seeing now are mind blowing to be honest. besides, more power means more budget hungry games and I think we're pretty much reaching the saturation point. Even sequels are taking longer to be made. Last gen, a sequel was possible in one year time but look now, sequels are taking 2 YEARS to be made. Examples include every single AAA game out there.

Also, Making new franchises is taking from 3-5 years now and if publishers want to recapitualte their money, they obviously have to make sequels which bring me back to my point. If a new console comes out every 5-6 years, Publishers/developers wont be able to make money on their games because they will be faced with a new console even before they are able to ship their 1st sequel. I personally think that from now on, Console life cycles will go from 7(at least) to 10 years if not more.

Well the thing is with graphics is the more advanced they become the less noticeable the differences become, add to that the the cost of making a game of the next gen consoles will be even higher and more time consuming (as Alimo said).

I expect next gen games to look on par to crysis running at 1080p, they aren't guna be huge levels better IMO.

Jin: it's fun to speculate but i really don't give a rats ass about who "wins".

I would expect that the dvd format might force the 360 into retirement sooner or later. Not that i think it's that big an issue right now but games get bigger and bigger.

I don't think it'll be an issue until the new systems are on the way

One has to wonder with online downloads probably wiping out Blu Ray eventually, how big are the hard drives going to be on the next systems?

Those are some good points but don't you think that when the next consoles come in 2014 it would be even harder to develope for those and make even more time to learn all the new tricks then?

I know this is a hard subject to predict the future and I don't mind if you agree/disagree with me. There is always good and bad sides in both opinions.

Like you could use that money to buy more games rather than a new console. Then when the new console finally arrives it might not need to use the best of the best parts and could still amaze people and cost less (or more depending on the situation / competition :P).

Tinks: the problem with that is that half the market has sucky connections and probably won't want to download a game ranging form 5 to 20 gigs :P I don't think regular boxed games will be phased out by next generation...maybe the one after that though, who knows. These things develop so fast.

That depends. Sony fucks things up by making hardware that is ahrd to program for and supply shitty tools (or so i've heard) while MS so far has had hardware pretty much based off of x86 architecture that most programmers are already familiar with. New hardware doesn't have to be that much of a hassle, though ofc it will always take time before it's "mastered".
