The DS is a monster!

Great numbers for the Wii, though I bet they could have sold many more. 360 is pushing along very strongly as well.

The PS3 is looking more and more lost in a world that simply cannot afford it right now, I'm not sure a price drop will even do much good unless it is significant (in which case it won't do any good for Sony as a business)

I don't think its the price that is holding the PS3 back, its the lack of software, it only has a small handful of decent exclusive titles compared to the 360.

i dunno, my ps3 game collection (comprised solely of the good exclusives) has already surpassed the amount of decent exclusives on the 360 that i own (of which i have 50 games total, including multiplats) but i guess it depends what you're into, genre wise.

i think price is still an issue for most people. especially in this fucked up economy.

The price has a big part to play, but i agree the exclusive games on the platform are weak, the only game i have bought so far is MGS4.

To me it seems that while the PS3 has some decent games out for it by now it's hard to justify buying it when a 360 is so much cheaper and has at least as much or more to offer when it comes to gaming. Casuals just want the wii, i think many "hard core" gamers opt for the 360 because of afore mentioned differences and that basically leaves a few avid gamers, fanboys and people who wants a BR player.

But like said before in this very thread, i think that will even out this year. The ps3 won't close the gap completely but it'll probably get a fair bit closer.

yeah, definately, for the first year there was only really motorstorm and resistance. but now i think they offer equally good exclusives.

unless of course you like specific genres such as JRPGs....in which case the 360 has an obvious advantage atm.

but for me personally i own about 10 exclusives each console that i consider great/amazing.

think the multiplats are ruling this gen personally. at least in terms of my own tastes.

I too think that sales will start to even out this year (as long as the ps3 gets a price cut) but that still leaves it 8 million adrift of the 360.

I dont think they will even out at all, the 360 will continue to outsell the PS3 in North America. Its only in europe that I think the PS3 may still have a chance.

I look at 2009 and I dont see any exclusive system sellers for the PS3, its all very nice having a few top exclusives throughout the year but how many of them will actuallly push sales? I dont think any of them will, If MGS4 didnt do it, I really dont see how anything else can, not even killzone.

The way I see it, in 2009 both consoles will offer the same amount of quality titles, but the 360's back catalogue is far far more impressive than what you could get on the PS3. Also lets not forget, the cheapest PS3 costs almost 3 times more than the cheapest 360 (atleast In the UK).

Some might not make it in 2009 but still there's a pretty good number of exclusives coming up I think. Not to mention those we haven't heard of yet (or those I have forgotten).

On the contrary, from what we know so far, there's nothing really exciting on the 360 apart from Alan Wake (if it's ever released this year). I know nothing's been announced yet so there's a good chance we'll have something great to look forward to (other than some new Halo games - 2 on the way is already more than enough for me - or DLC for GTA or Tomb Raider for example).

You're quite right about the price though and I believe that it's a lot more interesting to buy a 360 for that reason. But a price drop is expected so it's not like anything is set in stone. What's more, it is indeed true that Europeans have always been very faithful to Sony.

So I don't know if things are going to change (and I actually don't care that much as long as we keep having great games on both platforms) but predicting either one of the possible scenarios seems a bit hasty at this point. Especially since we don't know much about the games that will be released exclusively on PS3 and Xbox 360 before the end of the year.

Drift your right in saying that there are quality exclusives coming to the PS3 this year, but Jin is correct in saying that there does not seem to be any real big systems sellers there? MGS4 and LBP were touted as being system sellers, that did not happen yes there was a bump in sales, but not the system seller everyone was expecting, KZ2 has a real chance to move allot of systems but is hampered by a hefty ps3 price in a shity economy, if we can get a nice price cut soon, then i fully believe the ps3 will at least keep pace with the 360 (that is unless MS do there own price cut again and announce some surprise big games themselves)

I wouldn't expect to see Uncharted 2, God of War or even GT5 this year. Hell, Heavy Rain might not even make it till 2010. These titles are speculative for 2009 just as much as listing Splinter Cell, Halo ODST, Beyond Good and Evil 2, or Blue Dragon 2 for 360.
Right now the only decent exclusives that we know about coming in the next few months are Star Ocean 4 and Killzone 2. Other than that everything is multi platform, which gives non PS3 owners little reason to pick up the system. I expect the summer and part of fall to be pretty bare and it could cause PS3 to really suffer unless the price drop happens soon.

I've never heard BGE2 was going to be exclusive to 360, you're mistaken. Only Splinter Cell is supposed to.

Yeah, that is a decent number of exclusives for the year, but my point is that none of them are system sellers. MGS4 is far bigger than any of those titles from a reputation point of view, It was supposed to be the system seller (It made me buy one), but even that didnt spike a big surge in sales.

This is a very good point but the thing is, even though the 360 doesnt have any system selling exclusives this year either, it can still match the PS3 in terms of high quality exclusives. Also, pricing aside, the 360 has a massive back log of great games for new buyers, but I really cant say the same thing about the PS3.

This is a very good point but the thing is, even though the 360 doesnt have any system selling exclusives this year either, it can still match the PS3 in terms of high quality exclusives. i dont think the ps3 needs a "system seller". i know of very few people who buy any console due to a single game, its the result of wanting to play multiple exclusive games that draw people in...one sole game isnt going to increase system sales. but the increase in exclsuives as a whole will. hell, people still believe the ps3 lacks games and the more exclusives the ps3 gets the harder that assumption is to justify (although im sure they'll try)

so it wont be killzone 2 that makes someone buy a ps3, it'll be the fact they can play killzone, uncharted, god of war, blah, blah blah.

and similarly, it isnt going to be gears of war 2 alone that is going to get someone to buy a 360, it'll be the exclusives as a whole. gears may have tipped them over the edge, but it'll be just as much about the lower profile exclsuives like crackdown and dead rising that helped make that person decide.

same goes for the ps3. it wont be killzone 2, it wont be god of war 3, it wont be the new ico game, it wont be GT5...it'll be an amalgamation of all of them.

i dont know anyone who things "this one game on its own is whats making me buy this console" and rightly so, its an incredibly short sighted way of deciding on a console.

It needs both a stable of quality exclusive games and system sellars and a price cut IMO to not only start pulling even on sales with the 360 but to also start selling more and clawing back the 360 lead.

Most 360's break and it still has about a 2 to 1 ratio

Microsoft would really have to fuck up for Sony to make up that margin

i'd say uncharted will definately come out this year. just like halo ODST will.

ratchet and clank is set for the end of this year as well...at least going by the end of quest for booty. and considering insomniacs track record im pretty sure they'll stay true to that release date.

i've heard different things concerning GT5, some say 2010 while i've read the big cheese over at polyphony laughed at the notion of it coming after 09.

so i guess you're right,its anyones guess when they'll release. i mean, will we even see alan wake this year?

but i think theres a solid amount across both platofrms that'll definately be released on 09.

1. Though it can't always be taken for granted, in the latest trailer of the game they said the game would be there by fall 09.

2. It'll be 2 year after the release of Uncharted which seems to me like a reasonable amount of time to develop a good sequel.

3. There's no way the game is going to miss Christmas anyway.

So yes basically, I'm sure. You know there's still plenty of time to see - too much - of the game before release. ;)

We don't need competition to make progress, if for example you look at blu-ray, it was a matter of a needed technology to maintain large data capacity and HD DVD was actually holding back the HD video market place because of a split in userbase.

The same can be applied to the 360 and PS3 both were desired because of HD gaming yet they are splitting the gaming community and making it harder for developers to boot.

It's also clear that Sony and MS tried so hard to out do eachother that they have seen massive losses in revenue which could be redirected into making new IP's and such.

There will always be a loser however these companies should be working together to make a gaming format that is universal, much like a PC without the added hassle of upgrades and software problems.

Well the thing about competition being needed to produce quality is not true by default. In a monetary economy it is a necessity and i don't really see the economic system of the world changing anytime soon. In the best of worlds game makers would be able to make games because they love to make games, not because they have to feed their families...i think that would produce the best quality games :)

Well thing with that is that competition has driven both systems (more so for the PS3) to be really expensive, both companies had to make loses on the cost of hardware to make them buyable, losing money any way you look at it is not good economic sense.

If you think of the trouble they had this gen and how much it set them back its only going to get worse, yea the PS3 is too expensive but it can't be helped because of the hardware cost.

Jolli: the only thing i'm saying is that i think the best games would probably be made in a non-competitive environment, where developers are free to experiment and don't have to worry about sales.

Until we get some pretty extraordinary technology you are quite right. If a machine like a personal fabricator was conceived i bet we'd see some pretty drastic changes...not that i think anything like that will happen anytime soon though...it's just a fun thought :)
