When is LBP out in Japan? a big boost is sure to come then.
Bloody hell. PS3 sales collapsed further in Japan this week, falling below the 4,000 mark for the first time.

PSP sales came back to earth after a monster previous week, and 360 held steady.

Last week’s charts here. Data for the week ending October 26.
PSP - 60,467
Wii - 24,292
DS - 22,965
Xbox 360 - 7,844
PS2 - 6,962
PS3 - 3,931

Man if Microsoft had started lowering the price of the 360 last year they would have already been enjoying these sales numbers and probably by a much healthier margin.

Unfortunately Microsoft is traditionally slow in figuring things out. It's like those ridiculously priced hard drives. They'll get it eventually.

they're still pretty crap sales figures on the whole tho. it seems japan isnt ready to accept the whole "HD revolution". i honestly dont think any REAL next gen console is going to really succeed there. people just dont seem to want them

FYI, people have different ways of defining what real next gen means. as much as I hate the Wii concept, it's working for others and we have but to accept it.

7k when it comes to MS+Xbox+Japan is by no means crap sales. the 360 has already outsold xbox in Japan about three month ago so this can only be good news for MS not to mention that sales have been steady at this level for about 7 weeks now with absolutely NO GAMES.

Well said ..

Japan has always had that oddball gadget side which I think the Wii kind of appeals to, I think Japan are ready for HD gaming but only when Nintendo bring it to them.

Media Create Sales: 11/17 - 11/24 (Hardware)

Japan - The PS3 and PS2 were the only platforms that didn't receive a significant boost this week as the end-of-year climb finally begins. The DS and PSP platforms are both up nearly 20k units, the 360 almost doubled last week's effort from 8k to 15.5k, and the Wii is up 10k units from the previous week.

Defying the weekly gains for every other platform, the PS3 sold only 17.4k units this week, exactly (for our purposes) what it sold last week. As we look for continued increases in hardware next week, will the PS3 be along for the ride?

Hardware
DS+ 107,423
PSP 61,226
WII 35,298
PS3 17,436
360 15,474
PS2 5,281

The huge Wii sales are simply funny.. At my work there's talk about it aswell, mainly by women and people that you wouldn't excatly call core gamers.. The thing's a hype among those people, still.. But I guess it's good that more & more adult non-gamers are introduced to "gaming" aswell, even if it's with casual BS like Wii-sports, Wii-Fit and Wii-Play etc.. It might be the upstep to getting more adult/hardcore gaming accepted in society aswell.. Gaming is not just for little kids..

One can hope..

On the more (hard)core side, it's obvious the Xbox 360 is the system to have atm.. It sells the most games, and that's what it's all about, plus it's the cheapest by far atm.. Overhere in the Netherlands they have PS3 commercials on TV advertising it as the best HD-movie Blu-ray experience, not as a gameconsole at all, which is telling..

I agree Inflatable, Absolutely. What's more interesting is that acceptance the console is getting over there in Japan. The original xbox was averaging 1k-2k per week but the 360 since the price drop and the release of tales of Vasperia has seen a consistent momentum with sales jumping through the 10k-20k and even 30k following game releases. Sure the numbers arent as good or as consistent as the Wii but Surely the console is getting there.

Thing is I still see the wii as a single generation one off, nintendo has cornered themselves by aiming at the casual market. I don't see these people buying another console upgrade to play new wii sports or whatever, I know I won't be gettin another nintendo console as I have had my fill of the novelty controls.
It's a surprise its still doing those numbers, you would have thought everyone would have one by now or people would have caught onto the fact that the novelty wears off very quickly.

I've also seen people buy the PS3 purely for the blu-ray features, or that being a large reason for the purchase which doesn't bode at all well for third party developers. Right now I still only own 3 full retail titles for the PS3 and 2 PSN titles, but about a dozen blu-ray discs with pre-orders on a handful more. I'm surprised the PS3 numbers held up this week, had expected them to drop back down a bit more.

Glad the 360 is doing better over there, better the world over tbh, just a shame the RROD was such a huge issue, it has very much dented the confidence consumers have in the product as everyone knows someone who has had one fail.
MS will need to offer a lot of assurances by the next console launch as i know a lot of people will be wary of the fact the same thing could occur.

Honestly i think MS learned the lesson. With the next generation of hardware i'd be REALLY surprised if something like RROD emerged again. RROD cost MS too much, they won't let that shit happen one more time.

Yea, you would think they would have learnt, but theres a nice article on joystiq that sums up a lot of peoples opinions, once bitten, twice shy.
RROD isn't the only issue with the 360, there are a number of failures that dont result in the red rings and if you get those you gotta fork out for a repair. Those that get those issues should be taken care of aswell but MS has shafted them on technicalities, the fact is the product has broken down prematurely, regardless of the exact cause it is still broken. All these issues have built up around the 360 resulting in bad consumer confidence, thats why the 360 still aint killing all competition, the issues are public domain and so much of an epidemic that someone knows someone whose 360 has broken. Mine broke and 2 of my friends have broke and MS have done little to rectify the situation, newer models still break (although not as much) and those that are repaired also break.

I would be surprised if a similar thing happened to their next console but that isn't the issue here, it's whether the consumer will take the risk or not after being generally poorly treated by MS for so long this generation.
I will probably take the risk, i generally get all consoles at launch but my experiences with the 360 and that constant niggle that im gonna turn it some sometime and its gonna break has really degraded my enthusiasm.
Maybe if MS drops all the preipheral rubbish and opens the console up as much as the PS3 people will be a little more forgiving but theres just so many things wrong with the 360 (either by way of greed or by way of not having any prior console do what the PS3 has done) along with creating something that is solid, robust and powerful.
It does have to be perfect though to regain the trust of the consumer.

unless of course they want to rush out the 720 to get a head start on the competition again. even if it is a few years premature.

KORN: I don't think they'll have to rush anything to keep the head start they already have. The 360 is a whole year older than the PS3 and i'm willing to bet that MS will have something new out on the shelves around Christmas 2011 or 2012. I honestly don't think that Sony will be willing to push a new console out that quickly, especially seeing as how the PS3 is the underdog in terms of sales.

One thing though, that is sure to hurt the sales of any future MS console is the fact that any issue, not matter how small or rare, will get a boatload of attention because of the malfunctioning 360 hardware.

Xbox 360 Registers Biggest Black Friday in Its History

Xbox 360 consoles and games sell at record levels; outsells PlayStation 3 by three-to-one ratio.

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-K/ — Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system kicked off the holidays with record- breaking console sales on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007.

Strong game sales rounded out a historic Black Friday for Xbox 360, with record-paced software sales continuing for key Microsoft titles, such as “Gears of War 2,” “Fable II,” and “Lips.” Xbox 360 continues to have the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.

“We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009.”

Xbox 360 sales have also surged worldwide since the September price drop, outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week across Europe. Console sales in Europe are up as much as 400 percent, with sales nearly double year over year and reaching 7 million consoles sold this generation.

With a mass-market price point starting at $199.99 worldwide (estimated retail price) for Xbox 360 Arcade, a games lineup of more broad-appeal social titles than any other platform, and the recently launched New Xbox Experience, Xbox 360 is leading the industry and inviting everyone to play.
