The reason benzema didn't play is because Domenech is a complete retard. He picks players based on his astrology beliefs.

I assume you mean Nasri, because Benzema did play. But yeah, ol' Raymond is a bit of a 'nutty professor'.

He doesn't play defenders that are leo because they are "arrogant and play around with the ball too much."

Ok, so Russia did beat Sweden, I didn't really expect that.. Guus Hiddink did it again.. :P

For Holland it's a good opponent though, because Russia likes to attack aswell which means extra space for the fast Dutch forwards.. That same "weakness" was exploited by Spain against Russia aswell.. It's gonna be a fun game for the neutural supporters I think, expect a lot of goals..

On a side note, this matchup also shows how weird it is foreign coaches are allowed in international Football.. Hiddink now has to go head to head with his own country, which imho is a very weird situation.. Imagine Russia beats Holland (not gonna happen, but anyway), not a lot of people will applaud Hiddink for that overhere (understatement).. Easiest way to avoid such a akward situation is to not allow foreign coaches anymore.. Imho a coach is an important part of a national team aswell, and therefor should be from that nationality aswell.. To bad for coaches who like to work abroad as national coach (Hiddink, Beenakker, Capello etc), but that's the way it should be imho..

True, but foreigners seem to find a great level of appeal in coaching a foreign country - particularly Hiddink for example, who has coached Russia and South Korea.

I've gotta say, i'm glad England didn't qualify. Yes, that sounds weird coming from an England fan, but I much prefer watching a major tournament from a neutral's perspective. You can enjoy the brilliant football on show, without experiencing average performances from England followed by the inevitable disappointment of going out on penalties in the quarters or semi finals to (choose either Germany, Portugal or Argentina).

The divine truth is, I have lost all passion for the national team. Club rivalries overshadow the unity of the national team, as certain players get booed for what is mostly unjustified reasons. Our golden generation was ruined because no manager came up with a system to suit our best players. Now, we are left with a team that, in my opinion, will never win a major tournament or even get close.

I choose Chelsea winning something over England any day of the week ... except Tuesdays, because i'm busy.

Okay, ignore that attempt at a joke.

why you suprised Russia won, this nation used to be european powerhouse back in the 60's. i think they have been in more european finals than any other team besides germany ( 5 i think)

back then they where known as USSR

It's true, but you have to remember that this is the first time that Russia has progressed from the group stages since ... I think, 1978.

On tonight's match - brilliant football yet again, with Germany deserved winners for me. What a tournament this is turning out to be!

so much for ronaldo being the world's best player. Figo didn't go out like this when he led portugal

i think ronaldo needs to learn to be humble first, and stop being emotional when things don't go his way. and stop claiming his the best, no modern player has ever said that while being active as player

Die Mannschaft has woken up atlast! I wouldn't be surprised seeing them go all the way. Damn, so many potential winners this time around. I really can't make any sense out of who will win it. Holland, Spain, Germany, Italy...one of those most likely...but which one? I wouldn't even dare guess on that one!

Loving Euro 2008 so far :)

This tournament shows why we love the beautiful game :)

And I agree gmulis - the best players in the world do it on the biggest stage, and it doesn't come much bigger than a major international tournament. He hasn't been Portugal's best player, let alone the best player in the tournament.

Ok, scrap the Portugal v Netherlands final, it will be Germany v Netherlands now (I hope).. :P

First have to beat the Russians (doable), and then I fear we'll meet Italy again.. I fear we won't be able to beat them again, and they get away with it again thru penalties or something, just like in 2000.. That's a nightmare senario, and will render the 3-0 win in the 1st game completly useless.. But I hope we'll continue to have the luck you need to win a big tournament (besides good play)..

The third goal by Germany was a foul by Ballack, that sucks. But anyways, Portugal just did a bad job at defending.

And yes, I also hope it is Germany vs. Netherlands, that would be awesome. I want the Spanish lose next too.

Croatia out aswell, hmmzzz.. Looks like winning all 3 groupmatches doesn't mean a lot in this tournament, with both Portugal and Croatia sent home now by teams that didn;t really impress in the groupstages..

I hope Holland and Spain will break this trend.. Germany has a paved road towards the final now, unless offcourse Turkey become the next Greece (lets hope not, as it would once again make a mockery of the title).. I'm hoping for a Germany v Holland final now.. We beat the Russians tonight, hopefully Spain will beat the Italians (serious doubts about that one), and then we hopefully will beat Spain to meet the Germans in the final..

My prediction for tonight -> Holland v Russia: 5-2 (wouldn't that be fun)

^^^^ c'mon i think turkey derserve more credit. they have played more exciting football than all Greece's games in 2004 combined. they've played one of the most exciting football in this tournamet, comebacks in the last minute have been thrill to watch.(3 goal in 15 minutes)

as for portugal. they where vulnarable at the back since group stages, got lucky they didn't meet a team like germany or even crotia and turkey .and once a good team saw that, it was easy to disect the defense apart and score that was there downfall. they where good, but germany ws better

Could all well be, but in terms of pure quality they will be by far the weakest team in the semi-finals.. *If* they win it it will be a fluke win just like Greece 4 years ago.. Less of a mockery then Greece, that's true, but still..

What are you talking about? We beat Turkey in the first game. Portugal's backline is not the problem, for one thing our goalie is the problem. And the formation we played is horrible against counterattacking teams. We got out coached big time Germany used their strength height. By the way I wouldn't say Germany was better. If the reffing was any different with his calls Deco wouldn't be called offside on his goal and ballack would be called for a foul on the third goal. It could have been 3-2 Portugal... But that's football not everything always goes your way. I just hate that I have to wait another 2 years...

are you bitter that turkey is in the semi but not portugal because you team beat turkey, therefore they deserve the semi more?????

and don't blame the goalie when defense couldn't do anything, they should have been on guard if they new germany plays counterattacking

First off I don't think you watched the game, we allowed the exact same goal in twice. The first occasion Ricardo stayed on his line instead of attacking the cross. The 2nd occasion Ricardo hesitated he didn't stand his ground and he didn't attack the ball he was in the middle of nowhere. Germany knew before the game that Ricardo has a lot of trouble calculating crosses and making bad decisions... See the greece game 4 years ago... Portugal has 2 of the best central defenders in the world. The only weak link in our defense was ferreira.

No you wrote portugal is lucky they didn't meet a team like Germany, croatia or Turkey in the group stages... What I'm saying is we did meet Turkey... I was cheering for Turkey as soon as Portugal was out... I'm hoping they beat Germany just because I want to see what's going to happen within the country itself. It's an interesting match up.

Yes Holland! Get in there! 1-1.

Got to admit, with 5 minutes left, I didn't think Holland would equalise. But that's Ruud for ya, always popping up with the vital goal.

Come on you Dutch, win it in extra time!
