Thought this would be a nice change of pace from the usual big budget, high profile shooters and racers and such that we usually argue about.

Just look at (and listen to) the atmosphere in these games:

Machinarium [now released]
http://www.machinarium.com/
(trailer)

Feist
http://www.playfeist.net/
(scroll down a bit in the link, to see a trailer and screens)

Osmos [now released]
http://www.hemispheregames.com/osmos/
(trailer)

I think they are all coming out in the Fall this year.
I'll have to dig up some cash... and hope my aging computer can run them.

Everybody needs to check out Fez. It was an IGF finalist in 2008. Will rock up on XBLA next year.

Here is a seriously kick ass, indie developed XNA game, that is an official entrant into this year's Dream.Build.Play contest held by Microsoft. Which means that it should be showing up sometime near the Holidays or early 2010 on Xbox 360 Indie Games channel.

Dust: An Elysian Tail - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR7vE6l1MN0

Here is a little fact snippet about Dust: An Elysian Tail, direct from the official Elysian Tail website.
I am currently preparing a press kit with screenshots, as well as revamping the website over the next week. Until then, here's a Quick Fact Sheet:

I'm the sole developer on this project. I'm handling the programming, writing, artwork, and sound effects/voices.

I've brought on two talented composers; accomplished artist Alexander Brandon, and up-and-coming artist Chris Geehan.

Dust: An Elysian Tail has been in development for around seven months. Eight months ago I picked up programming for the first time, so it's been an incredible race since then. The property is based on my franchise Elysian Tail, which also encompasses an independently animated feature film that's been in the works for nearly 8 years. The feature film and video game are independent of one another. Each has its own story and characters, and other than the general setting and artistic style, have nothing to do with each other.

I remember seeing that Elysian Tail game. Puts the rest of our efforts to shame! It's got a good shout at winning purely on production values I think.

Megido posted that earlier, but yeah, the animation and style pretty much blew me away.
All of these postings really have me excited.

I tried the Alpha Demo of that Osmos game, and it needs work.
I mean, it does what it does without any problems, it just seemed kind of mundane.
Though, who knows how far they've come with it.

That's what I get for making a post at 3am, when I should have been sleep like any normal person my age. I completely missed Megido's original post about Dust.

The game still looks incredible though. Hard to believe that what there is of it so far, was put together by three people . . . well, technically one person and two music composers, over the course of only 8 months.

When I first saw this game, I was wondering how could the animation and graphics look so good for an independently developed game, and then I learned the guy behind Dust, was an animator and could produce all his own art assets, and knew how to do stuff like storyboarding and the like. Even so, it's still very impressive considering this is his first programming project in two decades, and he has only been working on it for a few months (while simultaneously learning XNA).

FEZ is also my most anticipated indie game. Mixing 3D and 8-bit graphics is genius. The trailer that got me was this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H54u4VmDFc&feature...

It is a pretty cool mechanic but it sorta reminds me of the PSP game Crush.. which I think did it in an even more inventive way. Not that this doesn't look really cool.. just not as original as it might seem at first..

I think the best thing Fez has going for it is its charm. There's something about the graphics and music in the trailers that's able to melt the coldest of hearts. Crush was quite fun but it does look pretty bland.

Oh definitely.. Crush had a good handful of visual problems. The animation was rather stiff too.. but it's still a great game.
