Exactly, Sony has gained momentum.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, once all of it's 20GB premiums are gone, Microsoft will continue to sell 2 out of 3 SKUs well above $300 dollars. 3 year old hardware without the benefits of an HD player or free wifi, and ridiculously priced hard drives which we will need if Microsoft expects us to take advantage of all the media integration they have planned.

PS3 will eventually overtake Xbox 360.. It's all brandname.. Playstation is still a very strong name for a lot of people outthere.. Xbox 360 might have all the games, but it's obvious by now it's not just games that sell, it's the whole package.. The Xbox 360 is seen as a typical Western American hardcore gameconsole.. That's why it doesn't sell at all in Japan, and that's why it doesn't really sell to anything other then core gamers everywhere else..

MS is not doing badly though, it's an achievement in itself that they still have a considerable lead over Sony after almost 2 years.. But in the end they will end up 3rd this time.. The biggest surprise this generation is Nintendo, who with a different strategy have won the (mainstream) market back from Sony..

Sony is the biggest "loser" this generation, even though they'll probably end up 2nd still, they've lost because they totally lost the domination they had last-gen with the PS2.. The PS3 is to techie, to expensive, and lost the casual market to The Wii now which I doubt they'll ever win back later on when the PS3 becomes cheaper..

In the end they will all sell well enough to be a succes, so it doesn't really matter who comes in 1st, 2nd or 3rd..

i dont think sony where ever going to achieve ps2 like domination again (i dont think anyone did tbh) and i honestly dont see any other console doing it either. not even the wii despite its current success. the ps2 was just crazy levels of successfull. and i dont think a console is going to top or even match it for a long time.

i dont think sony where ever going to achieve ps2 like domination again (i dont think anyone did tbh) and i honestly dont see any other console doing it either. not even the wii despite its current success. the ps2 was just crazy levels of successfull. and i dont think a console is going to top or even match it for a long time.

One big problem the Xbox 360 also has with it's image is the reliability.. Even though most problems seem fixed in the latest models, lots of people are still reluctent to buy one because they are affraid it will brake or scratch their DVDs.. Most people don't know enough about the product, so when they have to make a hard choice they usually go for the save option..

It's all part of the whole package I was talking about.. Playstation is still a strong name, has a solid history, and doesn't have a bad reliability image.. The PS3 also seems more futureproof with Blu-ray and the image of better more powerfull hardware (better maybe, more powerfull not really).. There's plenty of people outhere that think the PS3 is better simply because it's 'newer' and more expensive..

Did I say it has Blu-ray, and that you cannot play true next-gen games without it.. MGS4 is only possible on PS3!!!! For real!!! :P

Believe me, it's not just the games that sell.. Marketing exists because it works.. Nintendo Wii is the biggest proof of that right now.. ;)

And yeah, I don't see the Wii sell over 100 million aswell.. 50 for sure, but not 100+ like the PS2.. Sony and MS will be very happy if they get to 40+ million this generation.. For MS that will mean double as much as the 1st Xbox, not bad at all..

WRONG! you're taking your figures from Vgcharts which are seriously wrong. NPD is reporting 4.8 Million PS3s sold in the US and with only 2 million sold in Japan, you're saying the console has sold almost 8 million in europe ??? No Way.

Based on Official NPD Figues - As of End of June 2006 Total Sales stand at:

I would suspect that MS is going to $199, $299, and $369? or possibly just $199 and $299 by Christmas. MS will slaughter Sony again during the holidays. OF course an arcade bundle with halo and PGR for $249 would crush all.

Why is it so hard to believe that the 360 could sell 9 million in europe and the PS3 can't ?

You can't say that is Wong !! just be looking at one regions sales data alone.

You didnt understand what I mean. I dont think the 360 has sold 20 million either because the Vgchartz figures are all over the place. I am basing my comments on the OFFICIAL NPD Figures and nothing else. I am not talking about europe. DONT even think for a second that what they are reporting as euro figures is true ... how in the hell can they do that ???

The only thing I take as close approximation is NPD and Media Create and nothing else. None of the european countries communicate their numbers to the public .... so how on earth could they get those numbers ???

Then add NPD's monthly worldwide totals between April and June-

OK fine but here is something else: MS reports numbers that are sold to Retail units, PS3 reports shipped numbers i.e. units that go out of the Factory - the same thing as PS3 applies to the Wii. So those numbers are bull crap for all three of them because they dont tell us how many people have actually bought!

We want to know how many are sold to CONSUMERS and that's what NPD and Media create report. So the numbers you posted dont reflect how many actually were sold to consumers so there you go. Hope this explains it :)

No I am not ... Im just reporting the facts mate. No one knows how each console is doing in europe and I am just correcting grim in terms of what he calculated for the US - I am in no way trying to crap on the PS3. Besides I said it clearly, numers for all 3 are Bull crap (read above again) :)

Yeah I know, for the last three months (april, May, June) that is but you used the previous figures from the press releases of MS/Sony/nintendo which give worldwide shipped figures. i.e. these

Wii- 24.45 million
Xbox 360- 19.4 million
PS3- 12.85 million

You took these from their press releases which do NOT include US NPD number but ther own shipped figures. the numbers I posted :

1. Wii - 10.836.678
2. Xbox 360 - 10.465.032
3. PlayStation 3 - 4.853.804

Are total sales from the launch of every console up to End of June using NPD numbers from launch for US only that is. right now there is no way of knowing the exact numbers they sold to consumers in Europe. All we can do is add up NPD and Media Create to get US+Japan.

Well these numbers aren't supposed to be accurate Alimo its just an estimate, estimates allow for a margin of error.

You numbers are even more meaningless and favour the 360 because you are looking at one region, a region that the 360 is popular in, as opposed to Europe where supposedly the PS3 is more popular.

Well these numbers aren't supposed to be accurate Alimo its just an estimate, estimates allow for a margin of error.

You numbers are even more meaningless and favour the 360 because you are looking at one region, a region that the 360 is popular in, as opposed to Europe where supposedly the PS3 is more popular.

I'd rather take estimates of consoles sold to consumers from a well known firm than shipped numbers that tell me nothing. Even MS/Sony/Nintendo use NPD in their press releases.

Your tone seems to suggest that I am doing this to defend the 360 - I am Absolutely NOT trying to do that - I simply think that the numbers that the big three release are meaningless hence giving me zero indication of what sales are in the US/europe or Japan for that matter. The PS3 may very well be outselling the 360 in europe (it already is in japan of course), I am certainly not denying that but all I am saying, I dont take those numbers released by either MS/Sony/Nintendo as an indication of the sales - that's all.

I'd rather take estimates of consoles sold to  consumers from a well known firm than shipped numbers that tell me nothing. Even MS/Sony/Nintendo use NPD in their press releases.

Your tone seems to suggest that I am doing this to defend the 360 - I am Absolutely NOT trying to do that - I simply think that the numbers that the big three release are meaningless hence giving me zero indication of what sales are in the US/europe or Japan for that matter. The PS3 may very well be outselling the 360 in europe (it already is in japan of course), I am certainly not denying that but all I am saying, I dont take those numbers released by either MS/Sony/Nintendo as an indication of the sales - that's all.

I am just saying there is little point in looking at one region (US), unless of course you are interested in American sales.

I'm sure the numbers that Grim put up aren't all that accurate but its better than pulling numbers out my ass, because I don't follow this stuff like you do, and you yourself even admit that you have no knowledge of the state of sales in Europe, so anything is better than nothing, even if that means looking at shipped numbers and not solds numbers.

i dont think sony where ever going to achieve ps2 like domination again (i dont think anyone did tbh) and i honestly dont see any other console doing it either. not even the wii despite its current success. the ps2 was just crazy levels of successfull. and i dont think a console is going to top or even match it for a long time.

Nothing else really existed during the PS2. 64 eventually, but that wasn't for a little while

PS3 only gains speed after HDDVD went down the tubes. Bluray is Sony's ace in the hole

Meanwhile back at the ranch, once all of it's 20GB premiums are gone, Microsoft will continue to sell 2 out of 3 SKUs well above $300 dollars. 3 year old hardware without the benefits of an HD player or free wifi, and ridiculously priced hard drives which we will need if Microsoft expects us to take advantage of all the media integration they have planned.
