New Bungie Video -- Destiny Coming Soon

They've got my interest, big time. And especially because there may be few games even close to this quality level on next gen launch, I'm that much more likely to grab it. I'm really digging the art style. I'm also very intrigued by the story concept so far. I always have an open mind on these things, and don't try to bury people's work before it has a chance to give us a more complete picture of what it has to offer.

And if the next xbox is as connected as seems will be the case, along with the fact that they are surely to build on what they did with smartglass, then, in a funny way, this game, yet another Bungie game, could actually turn out to be a perfect showcase of everything the new xbox is expected to bring, both with the more powerful hardware and all the heavy app integration that is expected to be at the core of the user experience. It's almost like Bungie knew Microsoft's next gen plans and built a game tailor made to leverage it all to the fullest. :P

I like the idea of it being so connected and accessible through things like smartphones/tablets.

I also kinda hope there are some special powers of some sort that go beyond typical gun usage.

Just watched the vidoc. The story, music, world seem incredible. I find myself drawn to this despite it being a FP shooter, which to be honest, is not my favourite genre. Only a few FP shooters capture my attention. So far, Destiny could easily be one of them.

I like the art and the direction of the game in general, but they really have to deliver on the stuff they talk about. Douche Keighley did a little video on the game over on gametrailers, where he let slip some stuff the devs had said, so if they live up to the stuff he talked about it's gonna be a very interesting game. If nothing else to see if they manage to pull it of or if it'll just fall flat.

The connected stuff isn't usually my cup of tea, either, but I'm willing to give it a fair chance. And, being honest and realistic, always connected is kinda where we are headed in one way or another, so I don't mind a developer trying to put their best foot forward and get out ahead of what will be an emerging trend.

As an extension of this pillar’s concept, Destiny will have no main menu. Instead, it just lives and you’re always in it when you boot the game up.
(Staten explained that every Guardian wields some of the Traveler’s power: “You can call it magic, I guess.”) head off on an adventure together.

You’re at the Tower, a reinforced monolith that serves as your home. Here you can socialize, gear up, or group up and then aim for the stars – literally. Many other players mill about. Some you may know, some you may not. Some are making plans for adventure, but others may simply be watching the sunset – a worthwhile endeavor thanks to the spectacle of Destiny’s new engine, which pairs real-time dynamic lighting with global illumination for some truly spectacular vistas (one of the few things I actually did get to see with my own eyes).

Jones is a higher-level player, and as such has better gear, including an impressive sleek, black spaceship that makes Staten’s smaller, simpler vessel look like, in his own joking words, a “Space Corolla.” Ships will serve various purposes. Only a Scout class was specifically mentioned, though it was implied that space combat will factor into Destiny as well.
Sounds pretty damn ambitious.

My concern is if you are playing and get disconnected be it MS/Sony, game server or internet (anything can happen really), how will the save progress be like? will you lose everything or is it kind of like other MMO or Diablo 3 were no matter what the game saves in the background every few seconds/minutes just incase of disconnect.

Look, there is no way they would ship a game where you play for hours and then oops, you dropped and everything is lost. Obviously there's going to be some kind of measure to make sure progress is saved often enough that it won't be a problem.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. These are all problems that have been solved now for years and years by game developers. We only tend to look at them differently now, because console games are starting to get into the act of doing these things, but all the potential questions that require asking, have already been answered by other games that do this right.

I mean, I may be off on certain specifics, but who uses their home computer these days without a reliable internet connection? Very few people. This is why I think always connected is safe. I own a apple tv here at my house. That thing is connected to my iTunes library on my computer via wifi 24/7, and I never have any issues. Same for the slim 360 in my living room, except the apple tv is an always on device. It never really turns off, ever.

Seriously. These concerns make it sound like there's never been an online game before. Sorta ridiculous.

This nails it. Clearly Megido knows there's no way a game would ship would such a massive oversight, but I look at places like neogaf, and some are treating this as a completely foreign thing, when this has been common to pc and gaming for many, many years now, and a basic level of reliability and protection against connection loss is pretty commonplace at this point.

It's almost like saying, "Man, I'm thinking about going to play a game on steam, but I'm afraid to do so, because I never know when I'm going to end up losing my internet connection."

Yeah, i mean it's not like the MMO-concept is new. If that ever was a problem, which i kinda doubt, that's a kink that's been worked out long ago :P

Don't you think they look really out of place next to the other designs? It really does just look like a spartan...like halo rejected artwork.

Not really, the artstyle really fits with the others. It resembles something you can imagine existing in the same universe as the other designs. It's just more seemingly reliant on technology than the others, or perhaps there's not very much tech involved in that armor design at all, and it's, instead, just a metal heavy combat armor.

I don't get that

This for example...

Looks like they're comparing destiny's art style (which is very "star wars") with halo's. and they don't gel well at all. No consistency. I'm sure they could have come up with a tank character class that looked like it actually belonged.

I don't know why, but it sort of reminds of Brink, in an ever so slight way. Just the architecture at least, not the character designs whatsoever. I like it. Still haven't seen footage though.

It most definitely fits with the others artistically. The one mistake we can't make, is to assume that just because we see those other fabric based designs, that it must mean more metal based battle suit designs, are somehow out of place in that universe. They even fight against robots from the future in this universe.

The artstyle of the character classes have an almost medieval appearance, and the design of the Titan, to me, comes about as close as you could come to a medieval Spartan's appearance. I think it looks pretty damn badass.

Leave the Titan alone! :P

The more I think about this game, the more I think bungie has a potential winner on their hands. I know it's too early to say that with as little information as we have, but I've just been thinking about some of the things I've read about regarding what they want to do, and then I think about these things I'm reading in the context of what gameplay has been like in their previous next gen efforts, and if they get this right, and the gameplay is, at the least, as solid as in Reach or better, then I can see them striking gold with this game.

I would not underestimate the potential for this game to become one of the top 3 highest selling titles of next gen.

Basically, shared world shooter, where you can run into other players while you're playing. You can play by yourself if you wish, or
It's also a sandbox world. You're free to move around and explore different planets or hang out in hub cities like Overwatch where you can find people gambling for better gear. There's a sandy Mars location and a snowy landscape of a buried city. Chicago is a swampland. Europe is a deadzone. Vines wrap around dilapidated buildings. The solar system is flecked with rubble and long abandoned fleets. You can fly through the rings of Saturn. The entire universe of Destiny—the solar system including the Earth, Moon, and Mars—is open to your expedition needs. Which brings us to my next point...
In Destiny you live in a persistent world. It's constantly being affected by not just the passage of time, but by other players. As you enter certain areas of the game, the server will register which of these are public domains/combat areas. If you stumble into one, it'll automatically, and invisibly, search for another gamer to matchmake you with. Kind of like Journey, except the server will download all of that player's customized gear (which potentially makes up millions of unique, personalized characters). So as you play, the server should seamlessly integrate another player into your game. As you're scouting a safe path around the dangerous Cabal, for instance, you might bump into another player. So even though you're playing out your personal story, a lot of your time is spent in shared adventures. And even if you don't want to go on a quest with another player, you can watch other players carrying out their own missions together, right there in your game.
This is still your personalized story. You still have control. But it's constantly impacted by other players (in what way exactly, we don't know yet), and by events both planned and spontaneous. Kind of like what they do in MMOs—except Bungie says they have no plans to charge you a subscription fee. The game, required Internet connection and all, is built for social and cooperative play. But that doesn't necessarily mean Bungie is trying to jam-pack as many players into your experience as possible to say, hey, look how cool it is that this world is so big and full of people. They specified that the amount of players you see in your game is "design-controlled."

This kind of social interaction in console gaming is the way of the future, Bungie said.

Sounds a bit like TDU, which doesn't even require a constant connection. I wonder if there will be a full-on offline mode. Or maybe it's bigger than that.

Can't wait to see more.

Nope, no offline, you have to be online at all times to play it, even it's entirely your intention to play by yourself. Thankfully, though, no subscription, you aren't forced to play with other people, there does indeed seem to be a story campaign of sorts (although a different kind of story campaign), and you will still come across other players in the game. They came up with the proper name for it, I think, shared world shooter, but it's a shared world shooter with full character customization, especially as it pertains to play styles, and it has some elements of a mmorpg, but Bungie insists strongly that isn't an MMO.

It's ambitious, it's different, I like where it's headed. People are so caught up in graphics. First, the game isn't even done, there will be a next gen version, and I could give 2 shits what the graphics look like, so long as it doesn't look like utter crap and it's a good game. Too many times nowadays, you get the feeling that all a game needs to qualify as an amazing game is incredible visuals. It can be shallow and play like trash for all people care, so long as the graphics blow your mind. This game is ambitious, coming from a proven developer, and I think deserves more respect than that.

Also, the number of other players you may run into in the game is designed planned, so you won't just see situations where you have tons of players just for the hell of it. I like the sound of it a lot. For me, it sounds almost perfect. There's other people, but it doesn't sound like they'll shove other people down your throat. If you feel like engaging with other players and gaming with them, then you can at your own leisure.

I don't mind you needing to be online to play games. I'm already use to it from years of pc gaming anyway, and why shouldn't consoles being online become as common as people having their computers online?
