I am Optimus, and I approve this message. I'm running for President of this forum. I've already been endorsed by Acert, Grift and Phaethon. If they say otherwise, what they really mean is that they are so enthusiastic in their support of my candidacy that they've run out of ways to express that support.

Hope in Change.

I said prayers would not be answered, but I endorse you version of HOPE.

Who needs prayers when you have HOPE like Grift? Because Grift's hope is the future.

Vote for Grift, 2013, he is your only hope (of a crappy over priced, underspec'd, uninspired, wagglebox).

Ps- Yay for 2009 PC's being faster than 2013 consoles!
I just wanted to make sure people didn't miss this on the last page ;)

Yeah, thanks ;)

And interestingly today VG leaked some more info which I commented on:

http://beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1702525&postcou...

Edit: please don't PM me asking for specific information because I have NOT seen all 3 consoles. I was kidding and adding drama to the rampant leaks coming out. I have had people pass along info (seems Op has some OK sources actually) but for the most part people in the know have declined passing much directly to me this time because, frankly in their own words, the market is moving in a different direction and it doesn't reflect nicely when they give you info and you rip it as underpowered.

Man, I love reading your posts, even when it's potentially worrisome information. Some in the know say this information is as old as February of last year. Hopefully something changed since then. I also figured a cape verde was a somewhat decent peg for what's inside Durango.

What, if anything, do you think those move engines could do to help with bandwidth issues? You think they perform some kind of extra on the fly compression work that could help save bandwidth?

This part from the leak caught my attention.
The purpose of compression is to save bandwidth, not memory, and, in fact, compressed render targets actually require slightly more memory than their uncompressed analogues. Compressed render targets provide for certain types of fast-path rendering. A clear operation, for example, is much faster in the presence of compression, because the GPU does not need to explicitly write the clear value to every sample. Similarly, for relatively large triangles, MSAA rendering to a compressed color buffer can run at nearly the same rate as non-MSAA rendering.

For performance reasons, it is important to keep depth and color data compressed as much as possible.
The fact that compressed render targets actually require more memory, could this be a big reason why they went with 8GB of ram? Think it's their goal to specifically have a chunk of that ram eaten up for that purpose, allowing for all the compression they might want to perform on render targets? Or does the fact that the ESRAM is only 32MB and so directly connected with the GPU hurt that goal?

More big budget Sakaguchi titles.
I don't care which platform they are on. Just make them.

Final Fantasy VII remake!!! (I bought a damn PS3 for this, and it never happened!)

Oh, and I want Microsoft to show Icilda (And Sunset) :)

Everybody else, please keep your prayers realistic. There's only so many things I can fit on this jet ski sleigh of mine.
pretty much this

Along with notes on friends list and mini reviews on games list by friends.

Oh and make kinect standard just so the world will ignore it after a year.

Nice read, $199 would be an golden price for MS if thats what there truly aiming for? last gen it was around $300 360 $600 ps3a !nd that was 7yrs ago!!, i dont belive that price will come to pass though.

Did you miss the "har har har" part? It's far more likely that they're trying to cut their losses early this time around. $199 is just the price point that makes the underwhelming hardware a consumer value again.

Still at $199 it would fly of the shevels, and if the devs are to be trusted and the differences in power in real games terms would not be that great, then for MS and hard up gamers that could work our great.

If you think MS is selling their next console at 199, I think I am at liberty to say that I have a house built over a rainbow in neverland.

NOT GONNA HAPPEN! they are in the business to make money, they are cutting cost to improve their profit margins at launch and undercut the competition with agressing price cuts during the console's lifecycle.

MS may have noticed how well $249 stuck for the Wii and how Nintendo was able to ride that price point.

The biggest barrier to this, in my mind, is the current price of the Xbox 360. It's still sorta expensive for such an old platform. Maybe it doesn't matter.

I expect Kinect to make up for a lot of the missing "value." I hope I am wrong.

Big jump for the current gen. Although I guess launch games won't be.

Online to be free as always . Subscription based with lots of incentives, feature to justify it.

SP should be given importance.

It may not be the only thing that makes up for the missing value, if this is accurate.

Here’s where I have to pause and note an eyebrow-raising claim for the next-generation Xbox. According to leaked specs, the console will offer 8GB of RAM and 68GB/s of memory bandwidth. To put that in perspective, Intel’s Sandy Bridge-E processors, with quad-channel memory support, only offer up to 51.2GB/s of bandwidth using DDR3-1600. The only way to hit 68GB/s is to use a quad-channel memory controller and DDR3-2133. Is that technically possible? Absolutely. But given that console manufacturers are reportedly pursuing $399 and $499 SKUs for launch, it’s a surprisingly aggressive target.

Having that much system bandwidth to play with would mean Durango wouldn’t be as reliant on a small, high-speed data cache to hit its performance targets, and that likely creates additional flexibility for programmers to play with. The VGLeaks website implies that the benefits of the 32MB ESRAM cache are latency-related rather than bandwidth, and that makes sense given the figures we’ve seen.

I'm hoping they allow you to have more than 100 friends on Xbox LIVE. A notes section about your friends would be nice. For instance, went to College with them, Wife's cousin, played Halo 2 with them back in the day, etc. Gamertags, and people who change them often, it is hard to remember where you know someone from.

I'm also hoping that the sign in, interface screens etc, are quicker. I expect quicker feedback in the dashboard.

Oh, MS... your Bing Search sucks by the way. Fix it or dump it. Also the voice recognition equally sucks. Get it right, or leave it out. I don't want to beta test it for you.

Well, if there truly is a 3GB OS reservation, that should be a lot of space to make plenty of things possible.
