So, Project Natal?

What do you guys think?
Is this another Camera and Totemball kind of thing? Another piece of hardware to waste money on or is it the starting step to Minority Report like interfaces?

Well I can answer that myself actually; Nobody knows... Yet...

But when you think of the potential... It's mind boggling...
An RPG where NPC's actually talk and react to you and deal with how you're feeling.
Where you will actually able to "give" (Read: let the camera scan
) something to the characters in the game... Interaction taken to the next level...
Holograms and 3-D interfaces here we come....

The thing is, some of the articles I've been reading about it are pretty positive but vague...

Some of the following article's were ruthlessly stolen from the MS conference thread:

IGN:
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/990/990809p1.html

Eurogamer:

I could potentially see something cool coming out of it in regards to choosing attacks in jrpg.

Potentially, it genuinely could beyond anything we've ever seen before in gaming, well atleast if that Milo demo is to be believed.

I agree with a lot of the other comments; it has the potential to be truly groundbreaking, but we have to rely on developers really making the most of the technology in order for its potential to be exploited.

I was really impressed with what I saw, and I never thought I'd be saying that about motion control.

The problem is I don't believe this camera to be as sensitive and accurate to handle full blown games.

How is it going to handle;
Aiming in a FPS?
Light and dark rooms?

It'll stand or fall with the quality of the games and the pricing. If we only get "Xbox sports" or some run of the mill game every half year for a fortune (the cam) I can't see it succeeding.

But lets put it this way: MS have invested millions into researching and engineering this thing. Another chunk of money will go into the initial release and then another into advertising the product. This is a huge investment and I don't think they'll half ass it. They'll invest a lot of money into first party games and probably give some incentive for 3rd parties to hop on board.

As I said they'll need the quality. So the 1st parties need to produce AAA titles, and they need the 3rd parties for the mass market. If one of these things don't happen it'll be just a gimick... maybe for the next gen.

One more thing, I don't think that the current standard in voice recognition is good enough to actually make this thing work as it is said to...

I mean Tom Clancy's End War had a VERY impressive level of voice communication but it worked with a Earpiece microphone...

If this thing can pick up your voice from a couple of meters away and can recognize who's talking I would be very impressed but I'm not buying it... Yet

Here's another article. Brian Crecente testing out Burnout using Natal.

Sounds positive and that the potential really is there.

edit: RTS games anyone?

This one is even more impressive:

It's from a guy who works at the Applied Sciences group at Microsoft.
He explains some things about the camera...

And I found a video that discusses "head tracking"...

Seems like this is something Microsoft needs to look into;

A nunchuck version of the 360 controller would solve any problems for core games. A trigger, a bumper, an analog stick and rumble. It would need no sensors and would have no restriction on movement in the slightest (ie. being out of camera shot)

That would be good, and it's not like MS cant add that before the camera ships. It's like everyone has this preconception that MS will never release anything else besides the camera.

Well then the whole catch phrase "You are the controller" would have been a bit dumb. Their philosophy seems to be no buttons.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be good to have a nunchuck-like device, but it doesn't seem to follow with their strategy. :/

The communication it has is probably the most impressive part. Games I imagine are going to take a back seat and will get overshadowed when it comes to this device.
The part where the two girls are talking to each other seems like something we've all expected to come from the future.

Could be though, i can imagine it being used for some pretty cool stuff, if used in the right way. I imagine having a one-hand controller with perhaps a few buttons and a stick on it, and then using that to compliment the input form the Natal. That sort of setup should be able to produce some cool results in the hands of the right people. Though i agree, the casuals will be the ones to benefit from this.

*duh* Just noticed that Slabs suggested the very same thing.

The thing is, they've suggested that it's not. When they introduced us to Project Natal, they talked about the wall that separated the rest of the world from gaming, and how that wall was the interface. They want more people to invest in this industry... we're already on board.

Just look at what real game companies went after Wii's functions... Ubisoft? That's it aside from obviously Nintendo themself
What's that mean for someone like MS?
