"* Player characters in the world can recognise you"

This one is just not true as you'd want them only to recognize your avatar, hence all the NPC needs to know in an RPG is that the player is there and act accordingly. Other than that your points are valid...i just don't see how it makes much difference for a player that can handle a regular pad :)

I'm with you Megido. Total skeptic.

I still think Natal was designed for a completely different audience, and attempts to cross over are going to end up on the fringe.

I don't expect Natal to deliver hard core gaming experiences but i'm still excited about it. But i don't exactly see myself playing Ninja Gaiden or Tekken with it :)

I'm expecting some casual games, and considering this list i'll expect them to be of rather a better quality than i had first thought, but casual titles none the less.

Natal obviously won't cater well for all games, but I actually expect it to be pretty revolutionary within some genres - namely RPGs, as previously discussed.

That didn't come out quite right as I duplicated it in the other points. I was more thinking about expression recognition and potential scenarios where there is more than one player in the room. Points I already mentioned.

Natal for me offers two opportunities. Just because it's aimed primarily at an audience who's never picked up a gamepad before doesn't mean it can't also be used to augment play with a game pad in useful ways. By useful I mean complimentary, not taking mechanics that work perfectly well on a pad and forcing players to do them differently.

In an RPG scenario if the game can detect a change in my facial expression and react to it, I'd say that's pretty cool. If it picks up gesticulation (i.e. I can interrupt an NPC more readily by raising my hand naturally, or shake a fist) that's also worth trying. Small subtle things that people far smarter than me will find much better examples of I'm sure.

Not everybody working with it is going to start making "casual" games. My main concern would be I'm not sure if Microsoft have the depth of resources internally to show 3rd parties what really is possible. The Wii-mote would have been a flop had Wii Sports not been the perfect software for it. There's quite a lot resting on Rare's shoulders. I can imagine the lack of anything from them this year is because they will need to ship multiple titles next year.

I have a problem with the facial expression thing though, cause if the game reacts to your natural reactions it's not really role playing anymore :D
And do you really think the Natal has the ability to read subtle facial expressions? As much as i'd love to see that I'm doubtful, and even if it were done i'd be willing to bet that it'd be buggy.

Seeing as how a barrage of AAA developers are already working on Natal titles i say screw rare. They haven't made anything good since...DKC on SNES (ok, so that's arguably just my personal opinion, so let's say that Perfect Dark was their last good effort since that will probably resonate better with the rest of the community) and i doubt that they'd be the ones to set a great standard for this piece of hardware. I'm way more intrigued by Blizzard, Bethesda, Capcom and Konami nad hope that one of those companies will make something ground breaking to show what the Natal is capable of. All i can hope for, and this hope is certainly in vane, is that Natal doesn't bring around a shitstorm of party games, like what we see on the wii today.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/project-natal-pr... uh ohs....

So its gonna be priced in such a range that they can comfortably drop the price over a period of time....
I know i wont touch it if it costs more than £80 with a game included, and they will have a hard time convincing casuals to buy the console AND natal to play games, especially if the cost of natal is in the same region as the cost of a whole arcade machine.

Rumour: Natal to launch Nov 10th 2010 with 14 games and may cost £50/$80:

http://kotaku.com/5402009/rumor-project-natal-laun...

Nov sounds too late to be honest, I was expecting it to release around May/june. It's still a rumour though. £50 sounds like a cheap enough price though if true. I wont be buying it as I dont care about motion gaming AT ALL but that's a good price for casual gamers to jump in!

Depending on what games are released alongside it - like a high quality RPG that uses Natal in very innovative ways - I may just pick it up. Like I said though, it all depends on whether there is a game that utilizes Natal in an interesting way (i.e. it isn't a casual party game).

November isn't too late at all, the bulk of all hardware sales come in the holiday season. They'll be hitting at the peak time with launch level marketing. The price sounds good too, they'll be able to launch a $199 Natal "console" if it's right.

And if the boys at Rare can come up with some form of killer app for Natal amongst those 14 games, then that's going to be a world of pain for Sony because I don't see them competing on price. It will be interesting too to see how Nintendo respond.

Hmm, a full year still. That's a long time. But 14 games at launch is pretty good, especially seeing as how there were some pretty big names amongst the developers. MS are really putting an effort in to this it seems. Right now i honestly have that exciting "can't wait to try it!" feeling, though i'm kind of expecting that to dim a bit once the games are revealed :P

I mean, trying to be realistic, i don't think anything too revolutionary will come of it.

If that were the case, I don't think Microsoft - or the media for that matter - would be making such a fuss.

blm: I think the media is making a big fuss over it because MS is handling the marketing right and i think they are doing it like that because they want to build buzz about the Natal because they want to get it out there. I'm expecting it to be a fun gadget but i don't think i'm expecting to be blown away.

The gaming media has made a huge fuss out of far less.

I'm with Megido. I still need convincing. All indications are that this is not for me. It's for the broader, "non-gamer," audience.

Project Natal is one of TIME Magazine’s Inventions of the Year

Today Project Natal received recognition as one of TIME Magazine’s Inventions of the Year. This is the third major honor Project Natal received this past month including the Popular Mechanics 2009 Breakthrough Award and Popular Science Best of What’s New Grand Award. This is great news for the industry. Congrats to the entire team for the great work they’ve accomplished so far.

The gadget is only as cool as the software software it has, so before we start spewing awards over it maybe we should see what it offers first :)

I mean, it's a cool gadget to be sure but the concept alone won't make it either fun or good.

Yeah but awesome tech with poor software is still shite in the end i'm afraid :)

I mean i like the concept, i'm not bashing the idea of natal at all. I really want to try it out to see what it's all about but i also think that it's important not to expect too much of it, as usual it's based on contemporary technology and while it might be a step forward i doubt it'll spark a revolution. I guess all i'm saying is that i'm advising caution in the hype over this.
