LOL ACE The battle system is rubbish, although it does get better towards the end. (I actually think FF12 had a better battle system)

I still think traditional turn based combat works best for Final Fantasy, FF X was the best battle system.

Sorry meant to post something last night but I was quite exhausted so slept straight after :)

So I played the game for about 2 hours in total and I think we can all agree that based on that amount of time, we cant judge any type of game let along a JRPG but anyhow:

Graphics: Superb - not a single doubt there and the 360 version performs splendidly. The countless debates we had here about PS3 vs 360 are so pointless it's not even funny. playing via HDMI at 720p on my HD screen and the game is gorgeous!

Story: seems alright for now. Two characters, though, I want to kick so bad because of their voice acting, I will let you find out who they are ;)

Combat: I haven't seen much of the combat yet but I got to the point of paradigms introduction which I havent played around with much either but here are my thoughts: The game starts off WAY TOO easy. I think square should consider giving the option to people familiar with these types of games to start off on perhaps a higher difficulty but I think what makes it may be seem the way it is, is the anticipation of how fun it could be in difficult situations. The combat is VERY slick and beautiful to watch and I can see it becoming a lot of fun when faced with tougher enemies... I really really like what I saw so far.

All in all, I am very happy so far. Cant complain too much :)

So can you pause in combat, whilst lining up attacks?

Nope.

I actually like the story , its so much better than FF12's depressing starwars theme, it falls flat in terms of script writing but it could just be bad translation.

Anyways what Ace posted wasn't a spoiler, that doesn't happen to Vanille, although many might wish it did.

You line up your attacks for one member and when the guage fills up that character will attack, the other characters work off AI patterns.

Jeremy Parish of 1up fame is someone that usually says fairly insightful things, provided it's about a genre he's into, and according to him the combat system is ultimately rewarding and definitely is strong enough to sustain such an action focused game, but it does kinda fully bloom too late, leaving little left to do once it's actually working at its full potential.

No worries. The implication was in line with what the guy who came on the forum and spammed spoilers was talking about, so that's why I removed it.

I would've just spoiler tagged it, but you can't do that with images, so.

Well there is plenty to do when you hit Gran Pulse like side quests and some of the monsters are pretty hard, but yea I do agree that the way they unlock the characters and the abilities is a bit akward, it kind of holds your hand way too much and as Alimo said is far too easy, it didn't really get that hard til disc 3 which is kind of shocking from an RPG.

But as I say regarding a lot to do, If you take the weapon and accessory system for example each character has 8 weapons and those 8 weapons can be upgraded, when you max them out you can them transform them with a special item you can do that up to 3 times i believe, this takes a ridiculous amount of time and money (gil is very hard to come by)

I mean if you are a completionist then the game could last easily over 100 hours i would imagine, probably longer.

Going back to the battle system tho there isn't a great deal of choice, which is something that FF has always been about, the auto battle function chooses the best spells and attacks based on the monsters weakness which kind of take a lot of the fun away as the computer is kind of playing the game for you and as much as I hate to admit it you can't help but use it because you want to win the fight in the most effective way.

Of course button mashers will be happy with the combat system, but strategic people like myself will just wish for something a bit less forgiving and more complex.

From what I've heard there's effectively a continue system in there though that lets you restart battles and start AT the battle you died on. That implied to me that there'd be strategy to it and perhaps more challenge on individual enemies than is traditionally the case. You wouldn't agree with that then?

Yea I'm not guna go there, I could rant non stop about the battle system ... :S

Needless to say though the continue system pretty much equals easy mode as there is no punishment and its unlimited.

Well I don't really need it to be punishing to retry. My main concern is just whether beating an enemy or a boss actually depends on strategy to the point where you fail 4 or 40 times until you work out a strategy that has you beating it.

I understand that the structure of this is a result of applying the mindset of an action game to a jRPG, and I'm not really bothered by the changes that come with that approach at all. There's in theory been a shift away from the usual grinding to get numbers high enough to contend with a set of numbers on the boss or enemy's part, towards being able to focus on one enemy or one boss and really dig into the strategy part of it until you figure it out and you progress.

From what I understand you can always exit out of a battle and go back and set yourself up better for an encounter if you want, but once you're at a battle, there is a laser focus on that battle that is enforced by your retry/continue ability the way you'd want to retry a time trial race in a racing game.

This is all in theory though, I dunno how well this applies to the game. :)

Ok, I am officially in LOVE with the combat system in this game. Absolutely brilliant, It hits all the right strides with me. I am so happy. After the disaster that was FF12, This is such a welcome change. Put in another 2 hours today so 4 hours of play time in total so far. The combat picked up even difficulty wise though it could be a tad more difficult but I wont be nitpicky :)
