ok i see what you mean about the addictive combat :), i am now just questing and running around fighting anything that moves, so far i have not been able to defeat more than 2 enemy unions, but i'm getting close the stratagy and the pre-planning of your moves along with trying to anticipate your enemies next move does indeed remind me of a chess game, i'm now gettig used to the combat tactics and machanics, i have also tweaked my unions to have more Medic based characters and this has made a big difference as i now can bring downed unions back into the fight and can generally heal more effectivly :)

Yea some fights have required me to have one team just continously bringing the parties back to life, the later bosses can take 2-3 unions out in one spell :S

First time someone cast Galaxy II on me i wasn't too impressed.

Yeah the story is slow going, until you get near the end of disc1 then things pick up, but for me this game is all about the combat, i don't think i have had as much fun with a combat systems since KOTOR1 :)

Ok, played a few hours last night. Even after installing the game, the slow downs during combat are quite annoying to be honest ... why is it that no developer except Epic knows how to use the UE3 properly ??? I dont get it ???

Anyway, I am a bit disappointed to be honest. I am not liking the combat that much right now. The lack of selecting an individual type of attack for each unit removes depth and strategy in my opinion. Now, I am still early in the game so I really hope things will evolve .... I only have three Unions right now that I can control with three units in each ... lets hope it's more than selecting just Attack, or Heal or Heal while attacking because that doesnt cut it for me!

Oh Lost Odyssey, Where art thou.........................

If you have 3 unions and all you can select is attack, heal and attack while healing something is wrong? as by that point i could in addition to normal attacks select various different types of special power attacks that use up your 'ap', a number of different magical attacks, a number of different potions effects and different healing and reserection spells. Also i had built up numerous different formations that i could use against different types of opponents?? maybe you are not questing and fighting enough to build up your parties stats??, also a little tip you may or may not already know?, whilst selecting different unions to fight in battle, you will be presented with a different selection of attacks/special attacks/magic/potions/ defend/ ect.. options depending on which union you select to engage, then by pressing 'x' you can see which action each unit in your union will take, this has proved invaluable for me as certain special power attacks and magic attacks take longer to cast than others leaving you way down the list on the turn list when battle commences, also with 3 unions i hope your pulling in 3 enemy unios when you can as this is the only way to fight it becomes much more strategic and intense and the rewards are much bigger if you defeat them, i have learned many new arts and forms after multiple union battles :) .

I can understand jrpg fans loving or hating the combat in this game as it takes allot of the much loved tweaking away from you, which some fans of the genre will hate and other will find refreshing and love, i fall in the later camp, although i must admit in the beginning i did miss tweaking and building up each one of my squad in the game ala LO and others, so i can understand that point, but now when i go back to finish LO i fear i may find it a bit of a chore to constantly have to tweak all of my squad, oh well i'm sure i will get back into it :)

Finally gettin into the game after a few hours of play, saints row 2 has just been more appealing. TLR is a very slow starter, youre thrown in at the deep end then all of a sudden everything is taken from you and you get walked through some sections.
Finally gettin a hang of what they different situations mean during combat, positions etc and am quite liking it, I can see how it can become much more difficult later in the game rather than being easier as most RPG's become.

Graphics i gotta admit have been very impressive during cutscenes and just above average the rest of the time, the world just isn't interactive enough for a current gen game, theres no physics things in the world, people aren't wandering about towns and in the wild its just linear paths so far. I usually judge a game a lot based on its water and so far theres been puddles that you walk over like jesus, no ripples or anything.
Texture popin is ok, off the HD the load times are quick and textures popin in seconds, still not really forgivable but i can live with it. FPS in combat is a strange one, it's really due to the fading in and out of characters while the cam moves and as such is very random. It has a huge impact on the button presses that occue, sometimes you get ages to hit the right button, then all of a sudden the game speeds up and you get next to no time for the next button press.

I just wish they had taken some time to polish out the rough edges, a month or two more work to iron out the fps and add some life to the game world and it coulda made this an unmissable game, as it is anyone who gives it a chance will enjoy it but not enough people will give it the chance.

Thanks Delgado. Yeah, I know all about the stuff you mentioned but It seems I am just too far away from that yet. I am literally about 5-6 hours in .... Dont worry I wont be giving up on the game anytime soon. It's all I got to play at the moment :)

I kind of agree with Alimo it would have been nice for us to select attacks per indivual but I think battles would take way too long if that were the case.

Alimo when you are in battle you can press X to toggle between party HP status and what moves they will use, sometimes you will be faced with options such as use fighting arts 5 AP and use fighting arts 35 AP because they will be using different moves. (I normally select the attck where most of my union is using as many moves as possible, this way your union will learn more moves faster)

Also to learn new moves you have to use that type of art otherwise the character won't gain experience in that art.

It is a pretty deep game once you start to get more moves abilities and commands, sure I would have prefered a tradition JRPG set up but its kind of nice to see something new and it not be Real time.

last night i got my ass handed to me twice by those bitch twin sisters, now normally i would not mind too much, but the fact that you have to defeat multiple armies out side the fortress taking upto 30mins to complete, then you get thrown straight into the boss battle without the option to save!!! *$!!, anyway some of there moves are just awesome even though i got stomped by them, so far thats the hardest boss i have fought.

Yea those large scale battles suck especially if you fail to beat the boss at the end, im still on the toad guy.

3 X 5 + unions + 2 is the way to go I reckon, the bosses have some seriously over powered moves here and it doesn't pay to have smaller unions, they will get wiped out easily.

Just finished that section, out of the 7 bosses the Twins were the hardest for me, make sure you have someone in your unions with the Kiss of Life spell, and use them to do the reviving as they give full HP on revival.

OK, I am IN LOVE with this game! The combat system just keeps getting deeper and deeper. My ass has been handed to me several times, you really have to plan out very well or it's game over! :)

Too bad the customization is very minimised for all other characters and can be done only to rush but the union board makes up for it a bit. It would have been very nice though to at least let you suctomize the leaders. that would have been nice.

Anyway, so far so very good.

Remind me of that boss again?, also how many unions do you have?

Keep one of your unions on standby or set one of them to heal the other unions if they need it, also you can break the deadlock any of your unions are in and restore your health.

Make sure you have at least one healer in your party and use the Keep your HP up option when your HP falls below 50%.

It may be that you are too low leveled or that you don't have enough members in your union, it depends how hard the boss is hitting you for i suppose, Can't remember that fight either.
