Likely fake, as the whole 360 soc helping Durango thing sounds all sorts of complicated unless they have some really efficient way for it to help out with processing on the system, which I suppose they would obviously have for this to make sense, but it just sounds a bit much. It might make for some interesting scenarios with those 3 hardware display planes, however.
Yep sounds way to complex.

Yeah not beleiving this one, i mean i know MS hired some of the top IBM Engineers, but not even they could pull that off.

It would be on Microsoft to write an API that allowed developers to make use of the 360 SoC. It's pretty convoluted but everyone should stop pretending they know if it is or isn't possible.

I agree that we should assume it's a nonsense rumor, but I'm not as willing to assume it's impossible.

The 360 SoC is almost certainly real itself.

It seems like a very convoluted way to do things, if they're including this thing with the 720. Why not just put it all in one shell to begin with. Whats the point of it being separate?

What? According to all of the most recent and most likely rumors, the 360 SoC is right on the Durango motherboard.

They're just also shipping a super-small, cheap, internet/media focused version of the 360 as well.

Why would MS want Durango to be completley BC in the first place?

I mean how many gamers (Potential customers) will play the old games once there is a sequel or a brand new IP out on the new System?

Is this mainly about Arcade games?

So many questions...

So many questions...
1) Because it's attractive to early adopters. The 360 had a gigantic attach rate.
2) Because the Xbox 360 isn't going away. They're going to continue to market it as a new device.
3) If they create new XBLA apps/titles for the 360 SoC, they'll work on both platforms.

Those are the best reasons I could come up with off of the top of my head. I'm sure we could come up with more!

1) Yeah, and then nobody uses it.
2) I feel like the XBox360 has gone away like 2 years ago. Imo, bc would make sense if MS had some great games up their sleeves, like Sony does.
3) I thought that XBLA/apps games might be easy to emulate, because they are mainly not very hardware-consuming, but I guess that this only applies to a minority of the content on XBLA

If BC is required to play Arcade Titles like Trials Evolution, and Pinball FX2, then I want BC. If the new Xbox, plays the old XBOX LIVE Aracade titles, then I could care less. But I don't want to have to buy a new version of these titles.

I'm not sure I understand why they would even need the whole SoC, all they truly need are the 3xPPC-3.2Ghz cores. That's it. They wouldn't even need Xenos, the PPC cores could be fully integrated into the motherboard and whatever AMD GPU Microsoft is using would be leveraged for graphics.

The BC solution posted in the most recent VGLeaks article sounds absolutely ridiculous, like Microsoft didn't even think about it and decided to slap it together. One more reason for me to think VGleaks is flakey.

True. But if they developed the 360 SoC, and it's a cheap, lower power part.. it might make just as much sense to simply order more of them. :)

Why does this stuff have to be revealed at the end of May? Sigh...

The thing is I don't know how much of a reveal May 21st will be now. E3 will be right around the corner, so how much should we expect to see?

MSFT isn't focused on gamers anymore they're trying to attract the broad audience that the Wii left behind. The Wii proved that the audience exists... MSFT just has to find a way to reclaim them

The SoC makes sense to one degree and no sense at all in another. For BC it's great, its a nice feature to have an it counters sony's gaikai service. If it's cheap, small, low powered and negligible to the design of durango then great.

If however corners have been cut to shoehorn it in and its expensive then I worry. I would MUCH rather have the ps4 design where all of the effort has been put into having the best components possible that will be available to every game at all times.

The notion of daisy chaining the 360 hardware and durango hardware is odd, sure if you just add them together it looks nice on paper but just how on earth would that work? You have different instruction sets, different generations of hardware, different clock rates etc. I'm sure there is a way, if there is an abstraction layer that lets the 360 SoC be treated as some sort of black box that just has input and ouput or be used as the audio DSP and drive the OS display plane or something to relieve the durango hardware it could be benficial. I don't see it being used in conjunction with the durango hardware to run core threads or rendering. Seems overly complex but I guess if they could put a 360 SoC instead of a dedicated audio DSP and kinect cpu it could be useful.

Why do people seem to think that having access to the SoC means it needs to work in tandem with the x86 CPU? You can run CUDA and PhysX on a GPU. Why is it so difficult to imagine a similar solution here? They don't need to share architecture. It doesn't seem so wild to me.
