As much as people shit on Kinect... the amount of cool things people have done with the device outside of video games says a lot I think.
Yeah, it mainly says: 'MS, stop selling and advertising Kinect as a gaming device!'

That's it doesn't belong in gaming? I think we all know that.

True, also MS have sold a shit load of kinects and Kinect games, so business wise I don't see them not pushing in next-gen.

That it's a sign that it is here to stay. That it may have a bigger future in games that we can't forsee

Our dev kits are currently "always-on", meaning they need a internet connection to start and all, but I am not sure if this will carry over to the final Xbox, I guess it's just a way for Microsoft to track dev kits right now. Our game doesn't need to be always-on. Which doesn't mean it won't be there on a OS level, I just don't know.
There was also a big change regarding memory architecture: It is no longer a unified memory solution. There are now two memory pools: One with 8 GB DDR3 RAM (34 GB/s, 4 GB available for games), and one with 6 GB GDDR5 RAM (192 GB/s, all available for games). eSRAM is GONE! Technically the devkit has 16 GB DDR3 RAM, but the Xbox will ship with 8GB DDR3 (and 6GB GDDR5).
Shortly after we received the kits we got an update which reduced clock values slightly, because some devs have reported problems with heat. As it stands now, the GPU has ~2.3 TFLOPS (it was ~2.7 when we received the kits - again, sorry for not giving you the *exact* number).
This reads sorta like someone who read all the rumors and made a letter based on what a developer might say. Sounds plausible though.

None of this matters to me if the top quote holds true for release. If there's still no official word on this after May 21st I'm just going to assume it is true.

8 GB DDR3 RAM and 6GB GDDR5 RAM ??? that's quite odd...isnt it?

It is odd but not impossible. They have painted themselves into a very narrow corner with their DDR3 design, it was great as a way to maximise the efficency of not very powerful chips, it would have been great as a nintendo design or something released 2 or 3 years ago. Going into 2014 though it was massively outdated and with everything they want to do with it I can see them trying to upgrade it just to compete with the competition. Whether they have scrapped everything and started again, gone with some plan B or just shoehorned in some extra GDDR ram and a better GPU is another question. It does say though that if this is even remotely real they are up against it and probably had little choice but to completely ditch all their plans.

I don't get hung up on specs at all, as last gen has taught me that they are not the main factor, but dev tools and dev support are, games will end up looking the same with first party devs using they own consoles strength to maximise the look and feel of their games, for me personally I will wait as I always do for a certain game to come out that compels me to buy either new console.

Might not get hung up on specs, but that is 2 full 360's of difference between the ps4 and 720 on paper. The difference is nothing like this gen, this gen each system had their own pros and cons which narrowed the gap massively and in some cases tilted the benefit to the 360. When both machines are using the same generation parts, the same unified RAM size etc the difference comes down to purely how fast those chips can operate and how much is reserved for non gaming purposes. The original rumours put the 720 at around 2/3 as fast GPU, slower RAM and a further 1/3 of the total available RAM / CPU being sectioned off for non gaming.

You can't give away that much of an advantage and expect to compete, it's like building a mid range PC and then running as many background programs on it as possible THEN trying to game on it. If the original rumours were true MS would have had no choice but to take notice because as I said, their machine was already about 2 years out of date.

Very well said, plus we don't really know how exactly they will stack up against each other until FiNAL specs for both are released and then a true tech comparison is made, instead of guessing.

Microsoft are clearly being very cautious on it's dev boxes/servers and its sdk's, there are daily check ups from the MS guys ensuring the boxes are not tampered with. Also the lockdown of our development offices is insane, its like those Intel adverts where the scientist is wearing a blue overall suite and they go into a sealed room with only what there wearing. It's the same for us, our development offices are closed off and in the last 3 months the number of security cards have pretty much tripled. Lots of security for us coders, but its also very exciting.

It's clear from my use of the sdk and the development environment that MS are definitely on track, they have a brilliant developer story that I know other developers will fall in love with once its public.

One last thing, my fellow game developer colleagues have pretty much said that they believe the Xbox is severely more powerful than the PS4, they were very surprised with just how much.. They've spent a great deal of effort reducing certain game textures/animations and the engine in general just to get a decent 60fps on the PS4. Clearly in their eyes the Xbox is leaps and bounds ahead of the PS4.

Can't wait for you all to see our game and apps hopefully on reveal day, but definetely at launch!

What about this one. It seems the specs are same as vgleaks but with 12gb ddr3 and 360soc at the last moment ?

http://pastebin.com/WYBaRtE3
To confirm / deny rumours:

Must have kinect to work (true, kinect is integrated across the system, but hand tracking means it can offer a touch screen-like experience on your TV)

Always online. (false, the system is ALWAYS CONNECTED, just like PS4 it does a lot of stuff in the background - if you don't connect to the net you can play game but the console isn't worthwhile - a lot of the experience will be about being connected)

Tiered pricing and subscription based subsidy (True)

The system will now come with 12GB of GDDR3 memory (True - this won't make a huge difference to performance in the short term, but it is cheap and gives microsoft one of the few areas where Durango can claim a victory of sorts. The logic is that the average joe will believe more memory is better. Why not? The PC market has been teaching him this for years)

Anti Used Games. (True. They have a system and it works. Time will tell if they decide to implement it though.)

Windows 8 (True. The dashboard is Metro in style, but closer to Windows Phone 8 than the desltop version in style and function. All games will have a live tile tracking stats, friends, etc)

Xbox 360 SOC (True. MS will be pushing this HEAVILY as Sony dont have it. One of the key messages on May 21 will be that your entire library is coming with you to next gen. The kicker though? Durango upscales 360 games to 1080p output. Again this is one of the few areas MS can claim a lead over Sony and they will push this a lot)

Chief will be in attendance at Launch. Possibly saved for E3, but Microsofts biggest games will not miss launch when they are going head to head with Sony. While not quite an original story, you'll play various missions from the Chief's career before Halo 1 in a squad based co op shooter. Think Halo x Borderlands in many ways - the character creation and upgrade system from Halo 4 is being carried over but will be pat of the campaign). Think spartan ops on steroids.

At this point it could go either way - MS are down to the wire on everything. The system and key games could slip - there's some very tired engineers at Xbox Campus. Pay very close attention on the 21st - the slight of hand could be just as big as Sony in 2005 if things not gelled).

Vgleaks were right about the PS4 controller leak. They were also right about PS4 specs except the changes made at the end about 8gb gddr5. The specs what they claim to be the latest for both the console. If you look at eurogamer article. At the left side they also believe the specs are close to final specs.
In the case of the brush-strokes of the Durango and Orbis specs, not only do we have double-sourced information of our own, but we also have an extra form of backup in the form of these other leaks. Therefore, our belief is that the specs we are discussing are not only accurate, but very, very close - if not identical - to the make-up of the final hardware.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-spec-analysis-durango-vs-orbis

I am pretty sure vgleaks are right on 720 as well except the last minute changes. 12gb ddr3 will not improve performance. The 360soc working in parallel will at least help in the performance deficit to PS4. Either way it will be good if Microsoft can actually reveal the specs like Sony did otherwise people will still be posting BS that they are working on something before release.

According to an internal Microsoft e-mail sent to all full-time employees working on the next Xbox, "Durango [the codename for the next Xbox] is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet." It continues, "There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game."

I'm not 100% clear on their source, but I mostly trust ArsTechnica. Those are quotes. Quotes from an internal Microsoft memo.

I won't say it with maximum confidence, but I'm feeling pretty good about it.
