Yea clearly Sony, because they couldn't show us a box that didn't exist.
He needs to see the box that can read the discs so he can be satisfied lol.

I rushed home from work to read up on and watch vids of the reveal. Man oh man, was that ever just a train wreck of bullshit I don't care about at all. I'll hold onto a glimmer of hope that E3 will be their main platform for revealing game-related info(besides stuff like not being able to borrow a friend's game without paying a fee to install it), but that conference left a bad taste in my mouth.

Forza looked cool. It's not selling me a console though.

From Engadget:

http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-used-g...
#1 - Buying and selling of used games is supported

Yes, you can play used games. Yes, you can buy used games and, therefore, it's reasonable to conclude that you can sell them too. It was postulated that you would have to pay some sort of activation fee to Microsoft to re-enable those used games, but Microsoft seems to be trying to dispel that thought. Exactly how it works still remains to be seen. "It's going to be different than the way we currently do it," Albert Penello, senior director of product planning at Microsoft told us. "We'll get into more specifics later."

#2 - Games are installed in the background while you play

Just pop the disc in and start playing and the game will start installing while you play. No need to hit the Y button and go through any other theatrics.

#3 - You can play installed games without the disc

Sick of sitting through the full game install on the Xbox 360, only to still have to get up and put the disc in every time you want to play it? So was everyone at Microsoft, as it turns out. "That feature, the ability to play games off the hard drive, was one of the first things we wrote down when we started to talk about next-gen," said Penello. So, yes, once you install the game, you can put the disc on the shelf and forget about it. But, presumably, you can't just sell the disc and still keep playing the game.

So, how does that work? At a minimum, each game disc must have some sort of unique ID associated to your account. "Your Xbox account will tie you to your game," said Penello. That ID must, therefore, be somehow disassociated from your account before you can sell the thing. Unfortunately, this is where things start getting murky. "We'll get into more specifics later," Penello told us again, a common chant that hopefully will change when we get to E3 in a few weeks time.

#4 - You can download games that were purchased on disc

Here's an interesting situation. What happens if you want to play a game you own on a friends console? You will, Penello says, have "the ability to go over to your friends house, download your save game, or even download your game to his Xbox and pick up where you left off." So, not only will your game saves be stored in the cloud, your entire game library will be and you'll be able to download it from anywhere.

#5 - Offline gameplay is supported

That all your game saves are in the cloud is a nice step forward, but what if you're offline? Can you still access those game saves? Can you still play your games? Yes, you can. Games will work offline without an issue and game saves will sync transparently when you reconnect, Penello told us. However, some games that make use of Microsoft's online services may not be playable offline. That will be up to developers.

#6 - You can share games with those in your "household"

Another use-case we threw Penello's way: what if your spouse or child signs in to the family's Xbox One and wants to play a game that is associated with your account? Will they have to buy it themselves? "Certainly we've accounted for family members in the household being able to play games." Exactly how? That, again, remains to be seen. Only 19 days until E3...

Basically this.
Don't understand how they fucked this up so bad.

Only way to redeem this, is at E3:
- dispel the rumors about having to pay fee's for used games
- confirm that backwards compatibility is working
- SHOW A SHITTON OF AWESOME EXCLUSIVE (NON KINECT) GAMES

Else this is going to be Microsoft's last venture on the console market.

Also, I dunno what 5 billion transistors means for my games. I want them to spoonfeed performance numbers to me and tell me it will be comparable to the PS4.

Haha, I don't see it as a fuck up, but more as people clearly having the wrong expectations for the type of event that this was shaping up to be. Now if they do this kind of thing at E3, then I say Microsoft has done itself a disservice, but they've been building up their E3 showing as something that's on a whole other level from this event, and they were doing this 3 to 4 days before this event even happened, clearly stating what their focus was going to be for this event, and what their focus would be at E3.

I joked that this would be an event for tech sites and investors. In other words, real gamers. And I was joking, but there was a bit of seriousness in there, too. I was hoping for them to go nuts, too, just as much as the next guy, but this is more what I realistically expected for an event that was

#1 only 1 hour long.
#2 taking place at 1PM EST / 10AM PST

That aside, got some nice teases, and hope to see much more.

Connect to the internet at least once every 24 hours.

http://kotaku.com/xbox-one-does-require-internet-c...

I don't see this as that controversial, but flame suit on. Connect to the internet at least once every 24 hours. You don't need to be connected at all times, at least not if you aren't doing anything that strictly requires you to be connected to the internet, online gaming, xbox live features etc.
"There are many devices in your life that require the Internet to function," he said. "Xbox One is no different in that it requires, at some point in the beginning and at various times through its on state, to connect to our cloud and to our Internet. That is to deliver Xbox Live functionality, that is to deliver download content to you, that is to deliver some of the innovations around TV and entertainment that we showed today. But it doesn’t require it to be online all the time."

So how often does it check your connection? "Depends on the experience," Harrison said.

"For single-player games that don’t require connectivity to Xbox Live, you should be able to play those without interruption should your Internet connection go down. Blu-ray movies and other downloaded entertainment should be accessible when your Internet connection may be interrupted. But the device is fundamentally designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet as many devices are today."

And here's the bombshell:

Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?

Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours.

Kotaku: I’d have to connect online once every day.

Harrison: Correct.

Well, be that as it may, I'm guessing you haven't read everything, as even Microsoft's own site clearly suggests used games, trading in games, and buying used games is fully supported, but it seems they may have some special system in place around it.

Well if there is a fee for reactivating used games then that is hardly what i'd call supporting used games. We'll see what happens but still, this "reveal" really put the PS4 in a positive light to me. Sony showed me a console, MS showed me a set top box for my TV.

On the positive side i suppose if i get a new PC by the end of the year maybe there will be some games that actually use the hardware out for it (well, ones that aren't made by crytek). So i won't need a Xbawks.

"Fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we're going to show at E3," Spencer said. "We had a limited amount of time today and a lot of story to tell. But Rare remains an incredibly important part of our development capability.

"That historic IP that they've built I think can play a real important role on Xbox One."
I hope it's something along the lines of a Kameo style game. Don't want Killer Instinct right this moment. :)

You can run a game linked to an account, but it must be signed into that account to run for free. So if you lend a friend a game, you will have to also give them access to your account. (This sounds shitty to me)

If you try without, apparently you aren't just charged a nominal fee. You will be charged the games full price. You are essentially buying the game new.

At least thats how i understand it.

So basically they are doing a botched version of the game sharing that we've had on PS3 for the last 7 years. Good move there MS. Way to make your tv-box compelling and inviting :P

Hmm, I heard all the same stuff, but that you wouldn't be charged the full price. I can understand wanting to implement a small fee to ensure developers make some money on used games, but I still feel very negatively about the whole thing.

The problem is theres a lot of misinformation, and a lot of lack of information. The longer they wait to make completely clear what their stance is on used games and always-on, the worse it'll be for ol' MSFT. I do commend them for showing the box, its a nice looking, if not unimaginative, design

Not really, people just had the wrong expectations for this event. We'll see what they do at E3, and then we will really know for sure how things are looking. Just watching the event, you can tell they wanted to keep the violent stuff to a minimum and wanted to just focus more on the general idea behind what they are doing and plan to do with the new Xbox. They even pointed out how important exclusives were to them, and how many more exclusives were being made for this new xbox than at any other time before. People wanted new IPs. We got a small taste of one from a very talented developer in Remedy. They promised 8 new ips in the first year of the new system, with 15 exclusives for the system in the first year overall.

People don't believe the system is about games. Well, E3, if Aaron Greenberg is any indication, will put that to the test. As some others have stated, it's indeed about the games, so we'll see what was meant when Microsoft said that E3 would be all about the games. And Forza 5 at launch is nice. Not a game I would ever buy a system to get, but we know it's going to be a solid game as always. And this helps, too, of course. :)

I can't see how anyone can dock this as anything other than amazing geometry-

http://gamersyde.com/pop_images_forza_motorsport_5...

Crazy.

Anyway. I feel that there is still a lot of jumping to conclusions and looking for the worst going on. Sure, that is certainly mainly MS's fault for not being more specific, but I think too many people are just too damn jaded.

I really do wish they showed more games, but I get that you don't want to blow your wad before E3. I'm very intrigued by the machine as a whole, and the footage they showed- if real- demonstrates that it's certainly no slouch on the power front. The way different components can work together will certainly make the console comparisons interesting.

Personally, I love the entertainment extras and the Kinect interface. I currently use it with the 360 all the time when I'm not gaming. Whether I'm checking vids on Youtube while I clean up, or folding clothes or some such everyday life chore, I very much enjoy my voice controls. I am all for a more precise and powerful experience with it.

I know people say that you can just use a button press or controller for navigation, but I don't even have to turn my controller on. I say a few phrases and get where I need much quicker than scrolling now a days, and its nice not to track down remotes. Its pretty great to me, and I know it isn't really game related, but I love that functionality.

As for the used game issue, I think we have to see, but I've seen many older 360 and xbox games in the Live store for about what I'd pay at a used game store already, so It's not as big a deal to me.

I think I'll reserve my outrage till after I see what the big two have at E3...
