Haha, everybody will take a deep breath and then we'll see what's what at E3. I expect MS to come out swinging.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsN4u5UZqno#t=0m6s
Expectations are always high lol

I had no interest in MS next gen anyway and still don't, I doubt there is anything they can do at E3 at this point to get me back, kind of weird I have done a ... uh 360 this generation from supporting MS to supporting Sony.

Oh, a detail lost in all of this. Every single Xbox One game will have dedicated servers. No more peer to peer stuff.

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/05/xbox-one
Perhaps most intriguing, however, is that Xbox One gives game developers the ability to access Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform. That leads to a few obvious and immediate applications: All your downloaded and installed games and achievements are synced to the cloud and can be accessed and played without interruption on any Xbox One you sign in to; stable, dedicated servers for every multiplayer game rather than the notoriously fragile practice of hosting matches on one participant’s console; even multiplayer matches that can grow to 64, even 128 participants, rather than the usual limit of 16 or 32.

But other possibilities also come to mind. If developers are able to offload significant chunks of processing power to the cloud—conceivably even fundamental game mechanics like physics engines or collision-detection systems—that frees them to use local processing for even more intensive processes. In other words, the possibilities are limited only by the imaginations of thousands of game programmers. “It’s not like on day one, everyone will have figured out how to take advantage of that power,” Whitten says. “It’s just one of those stakes we’re placing.”
Seems they have a legit working cloud rendering system, too, if developers decide to take advantage of it.
As it should have been from day one, if you are paying for a service that is exactly what you should be getting.

The idea that Xbox games are going to offload stuff like physics to the cloud is absolute nonsense. The latency makes it a non-starter.They couldn't even manage a stream for an hour yesterday without it buffering to hell and back.

Persistent worlds, dedicated servers and farming out CPU intensive processes (say pre-computing a set of animations etc.) as part of a loading operation are all feasible. Collision detection just isn't.

In reality, the first two waves of games will have publishers leveraging it as an anti-piracy device with some spurious "feature" ala Sim City.

I'd be a lot more cynical about things if they spent five minutes showing what cloud computing might do for a AAA first party effort but Skype was more important.

THE KINECT IS ALWAYS ON

DO YOU UNDERSTAND

IT IS ALWAYS ON, MANDATORY

EYES AND EARS ALL THE TIME

ALWAYS ON

TELL ME YOU AREN'T THIS NAIVE THAT YOU'D THINK THIS IS A GOOD THING
I do get some of the worry, but honestly, how else could they offer the functionality they want( ie turning it on with your voice). Those are the kinds of things we have to think about.

Tin foil hat stuff aside, I actually applaud them for taking an obviously risky track to move the whole idea forward. It just being on doesn't mean they are "watching" you.

I can understand this would make some people uncomfortable, but to offer the kind of functionality they want to deliver I don't see how else they'd do it. I guess it's up to you (the consumer) to decide what they want to put up with for that functionality. Of course the first hint of wrong doing will destroy them, and I'm sure they are aware of that. So again, It takes balls, but it may end up being something amazing.

Another thing is that this seems to be similar to how PCs deal with owning games. Its a tricky situation when you can download your games to your hard drive and play without the disk. It's definitely an issue we need to think about if we want the industry to survive...

I always find it a little bizarre how paranoid people get with Webcams. Some staff at my company are convinced we've rigged the web cams on their Dell notebooks so we can spy on them. Like I've got bloody time.

Kinnect being on all the time doesn't particularly bother me as the slightest hint of any proper wrong doing on Microsoft's part would finish them as a company. It'd be that big. The class action in the US alone would be merciless.

The unease about having it in your room is another thing and I'm sure others will try and exploit that but we're in a world where Google Glass is a thing and it's not completely dead in the water despite the litany of privacy issues that brings so who knows.

The size of the damn thing is more 1984 than anything else though ;)

I really wish the thing wasn't so ugly, lol.

Also, Kinect is part of the console, not an add on any more. Its a key bit of tech, so if people really hate the idea so much, they should just go PS4. The Kinect is not going to ruin anyone's experience.

True enough but for me its like the Wii sensor bar, its there and always reminding you that this console is gimmicky, sure the Kinect 2 is much more advanced but I just wana play my consoles with a controller.

Maybe I am getting old :S

People also joked about renting movies and what not and the Kinect being able to count the people in the room.

Pop up box says "There are currently 5 people in the room, to view this film you have to have 4 or less, please remove a person from the viewing area" lol

If you understood 1984 as a "privacy issue" then I'd suggest you read it again. The US government (and in practice almost every western country now) enforces that every bit of communication be recorded and stored for some time (or indefinitely once that giant server is ready in Utah). It's not far fetched to suggest that some government officials are wetting their pants at the prospect of having a spy sitting in the living rooms of millions of people.

edit: And when you take the time to read the TOS they explicitly say that they can and will monitor you "including the content of your communications, in order to: [..] comply with the law or respond to lawful requests or legal process". Or in English: They'll hand any bit of information they have about you the moment someone from the DHS, IRS or Obamas dog knock on their door to request it. Especially the IRS might take an interest. But don't whatever, I'm just a tin foil hat idiot. The IRS would never spy and pester its citizens...

They were working on that stuff but it obviously hasn't manifested. At least not in a way that doesn't suck. Windows Live was a very bastardized version of it. I'll concede whilst I'm at it to being wrong about XBLA games carrying over as well. That's a shame. They made a good fist at hardware emulation last time and were in a much better position to do so here than from Xbox -> 360.

They have a clear policy with regard to what they do with Kinnect data and that will have to continue otherwise they'll be dragged in front of the senate. Their last appearance didn't go so well.

My Macbook is not actively recording me with it's webcam/mic as I'm typing this and uploading that footage/audio to the Government. Voice/Video chats over Live may well be fair game in some places but that's no different from now.

If some strokers in government offices are fantasising about leveraging Kinnect in millions of living rooms they need to get out more as fantasy is all it is.

So did you know I was talking to you? I didn't want it to be a "call out." :D

And yes, the lack of backwards compatibility, specifically for XBLA, strikes me as a big deal. And it's why I broke up with XBLA years ago. The only assurances I received for the future of the platform were from you! :)
