Which is basically what the article stated and what most of us already knew. So nothing confirmed.
I think if MS had stronger components they'd be screaming it from the rooftops to counter sony. Their silence said it all for me.

One thing I can't get my head around is:

WHY do they think that switching from gaming to f**k*ng TV in an instant is such a huge, rocket-scientific thing?

I have a pretty cheap TV and guess what, it has a picture in picture function available only 3 button pushes away.
I can turn it on/off quicker than saying 'Xbox show BBC'.

Half their presenetation I thought: wow....not!

Voice and gesture controles, the pest of the future!

I think it is important to spread it so people are not confused with 8GB ram and 8 core processors. Microsoft will never go into details or admit it. This is so obvious. Also 3GB is reserved and it has 3 OS for multitasking, skype other apps, kinect functionality etc.

I do get some of the worry, but honestly, how else could they offer the functionality they want( ie turning it on with your voice). Those are the kinds of things we have to think about.

Tin foil hat stuff aside, I actually applaud them for taking an obviously risky track to move the whole idea forward. It just being on doesn't mean they are "watching" you.

I can understand this would make some people uncomfortable, but to offer the kind of functionality they want to deliver I don't see how else they'd do it. I guess it's up to you (the consumer) to decide what they want to put up with for that functionality. Of course the first hint of wrong doing will destroy them, and I'm sure they are aware of that. So again, It takes balls, but it may end up being something amazing.
The scenario I used as an example was what if another person in the room said something and the Kinect just changed to TV despite you not wanting it to. Everytime I say something it can't understand it's just going to pop on while it's turned off? It being on being mandatory tells me there might not just be some setting you can tell it to stop listening, since it always being on is mandatory. Follow me?

Another thing is that this seems to be similar to how PCs deal with owning games. Its a tricky situation when you can download your games to your hard drive and play without the disk. It's definitely an issue we need to think about if we want the industry to survive...
Mandatory installs. Means that I can't just optionally install it to my HDD and then play it without the disc, it means that I have to. Consoles other biggest advantage vs PCs just flew out the Windows. If this was optional, again, no argument. It's a cool feature to keep from swapping discs. And to the used game market, who's going to be responsible for checking if someone deactivated their game on XBL before trading it in? It's more likely that the fee will be for any game that has already been registered.

People keep mentioning that the PS4 may use this too, and I agree. But they haven't confirmed it. I'm only on Microsoft's back because they did.

Was looking forward to the reveal. I have to agree with Korn that not going into the technical details also appears to me as if they have something to hide. Where are the 500 Billion transistors, if this thing is as weak as it seems? And though I like the idea of TV and movie switching, it seems too much of a sacrifice and is catering to the american market. The japanese reactions on Kotaku say it all.

Controller having better rumble seems nice. No Rare love made me sad. EA showing pre-rendered stuff with "original game assets" was very underwhelming. Speaking of underwhelming - Call of Duty didn't look that good, Killzone on PS4 still made a bigger (graphical and dimensional) impression on me, even with half the RAM the demo used at Sony's presser.

LOVED the remedy game though and that was actually the only thing where my heart-rate went up, which is sad.

The hardware looks like a set-top box and thus I see where MS wants to go. I really find it hard to accept, that all my games I have bought on XBLA, will be gone with the new model. You'd think they would get that right ...

I will buy both consoles, but if those MS games at E3 are not MIND-BLOWING, I will remain somehow disappointed until then.

It isn't 3GB reserved. It's 2GB actually being used now, with another 1GB reserved, but not actually being used for anything just yet. It may be released to devs, it may even be used for something else, but the decision hasn't been made yet.

Separately, all the focus on specs is something that people should know, but it will have very little bearing on the system having amazing games. It's all about the kind of software that developers design for the system. And it's easy to say better specs = better games, but I've seen proof over the years that such isn't the case. The goal isn't to have the strongest possible console, it's to give developers what you think they need to create incredible games. Sony and Microsoft have a different idea of what that means. Just because one side ends up stronger or weaker doesn't mean that one of them got it wrong. Take the Wii-U, for example, that's a system that I haven't given up on simply because it isn't a powerhouse. There will be incredible content coming to that system such as the next Xenoblade game and a number of other things that I'm sure will validate that system.

At least that's how I see it. If Microsoft built a system that enables developers to design the kinds of games that they want to design, then that's all that matters. It's always tempting to want to be better than the next guy, but that isn't always realistic.

Why do they even need 2GBs? We're talking about Windows 8, the damn thing doesn't need more than 280mbs to boot up. What the hell do they need all of that ram for?

Atm it's kind of irrelevant what they MIGHT do with that 1gig of ram. Games like forza and whatever other launch titles will undoubtably be working with 5 gig.

I don't see how anybody who is already sold on Sony's PS4 could be upset with Microsoft's reveal. Despite it NOT BEING a full game conference Microsoft showed quite a bit. The only thing Sony brought to their reveal was a CONTROLLER. That's it. And everyone has already declared them the winner of the next generation.

I'll say it again, nothing that Microsoft showed took anything away from it being a game machine. The things people are complaining about aren't going to keep games from coming to this platform.

Which is more than enough. If developers can't make incredible games with 5GB worth of memory, then the problem is the developers, not the specs. ;) It's just system reservation is something that you have to be very, very careful about in the early going, because you never want to have what devs can use decrease over time. It should only ever increase. So, Microsoft took a better safe than sorry approach of saying, "okay, we'll take these 3GB for now, even if we may not necessarily need all of it right now." The risk of taking too little is that should a need arise to give your system's os a certain capability or set of features, doing so could come at the cost of literally breaking existing games that may have already taken advantage of the ram you're about to take away and reserve for the system's OS.

So, there's that risk. It's always better to take more than you need at the start and then whittle away what you don't need over time, but you don't ever want to undershoot what you might need, and be put in a situation where your choice is break existing games that have already been released using that ram, or simply accept that certain features can never be added to your console's OS, because neither MS or Sony will opt to break existing ps4 and xbox one titles. Aside from that, it makes sense that launch titles start out with the bare minimum of what they'll be able to access. Early on the PS3's OS took up a lot more space than was necessary, until Sony whittled it down overtime, giving that ram back to developers to create games.

The big complaint, and fair enough, is that it wasn't the event that people were expecting, and gamers indeed expect to see more games. I don't necessarily think this means Microsoft did a bad job, because I don't think they did. I understand why people that wanted games left and right would feel bummed, though. I do, however, believe it was important that they get out the first part of their message, so that it isn't a complete mystery and gets lost in the flood of information between it and the PS4. The big criticism of Microsoft in the past with their products is that they haven't always made it clear what they want that product to entirely be, or even what it is capable of. That Kinect xbox one demonstration of how the console could be manipulated and its features accessed is one of the single most competent solid live demonstrations Microsoft has ever given on any product.

It isn't the case that Microsoft doesn't care about games, they just opted to mostly focus on one thing at this event, while trying to give reassurances to their commitment on games, but gamers, as expected, demand more than simple reassurances. They want to see it for themselves in a more complete way. If there's more announcements and reveals like quantum break, then it'll be an amazing E3. And somewhat I feel Microsoft anticipated this reaction somewhat, or else they wouldn't have been hyping E3 as they were 3 to 4 days before this event even happened while trying to get the message out that this event was about the vision for the product and mostly about the team behind the system.

If the below is true. OH DEAR GOD, MS what the HELL are you doing!
Does it require an internet connection?

YES. Xbox One will need to connect to the internet frequently in order to let you play games, watch TV or do anything else. According to Microsoft's Phil Harrison it will need to do so approximately every 24 hours at least, more frequently for games and services that rely more heavily on the cloud. If you are somewhere without any Internet connection at all, such as a military base, you will NOT be able to use Xbox One.

It is reasonable to infer from this, and the other information Microsoft has provided regarding game-sharing, that Xbox One will need to connect to the Internet to authenticate you as well as connect to the Cloud. Games appear to be tied to your Xbox Live account, so without connecting to the Internet the Xbox One won't be able to verify that you own them.

Is it always-online?

Technically NO, but it depends on your definition of the phrase. You will be able to watch TV and Blu-Ray movies and play single-player games without being connected to the Internet at all times, but as outlined above, the console will need access to the Internet at least once a day. Microsoft's Harrison phrased it thus, speaking to Eurogamer: "Some bits of the system will work offline. I think the key point to make is that Xbox One requires an internet connection, but it does not need to be connected all the time. We think that most of the biggest games on Xbox One and most of the games and experiences and services you want to use will be internet-connected."

As most people have said. The show itself didn't take anything away from the system outside of a horrible lack of focus on gaming (after the show i was more then willing to wait for games to be shown at E3). It was EVERYTHING that followed that that took away from the system...

Just look at all the stuff that wasn't mentioned on stage but was found out afterwards and pissed a hell of a lot of people off...

-TV functionality will only work in the US at launch and required additional hardware.
-used games won't work
-no BC (not a huge issue but didn't exactly help)
-mandatory kinect for console to function
-internet required to function

The "console" (i use the term loosely) is aimed at american sport loving tele addicts...everyone else need not apply. Europe and asia wont even see these features or just won't care for them (nfl...really?). And even their main selling point of "interactive TV" won't work here day 1. Combined with recent news they won't support self publishing for indies and specs that are looking less then stellar, and i'm not really sure what there is to like?

Id love a new crackdown game from MS. Prior to the event i was more then willing to buy the console if something like that was announced. But i'd need a complete 180 in terms of all the negative news that has come to light for ANY game to sway me now. It's going to take a LOT to make me forget about the forced kinect, required internet, no used game monstrosity that it is now.

I can't believe how messed up everything is.

I don't know how much experience with using the kinect this way you have( I'm assuming not much), but it already works pretty well on the 360. saying "xbox"is what makes it start listening for instructions. My kinect can tell between my voice and my wifes or kids, and when I'm signed in, it ignores them. I wouldn't be surprised if the new one can recognise inflection too, so maybe it knows when you are addressing it? I know right now, once it's listening, I don't even have to speak loudly unless there is a lot of background noise.

Based on my experience this gen, I'm pretty confident it won't be an issue...

It's a shame, a bloody shame. MS is in a good position to completely dominate the console market following Xbox 360 if they had just stuck to the same principles that made 360 such a success. Japan aside, they managed to take a large pice of the pie in the US/EU and their 360 installed base in the US is almost at Wii level ....but no they had to go and do this.

Arrogance, bloody arrogance. It almost killed off Sony and i am sure it will do the same to Xbox - the TV thing WILL FAIL. As simple as that.
