i know, right? i dont get it. my only explination for them to demo this in regards to the UE4 engine is if it has some seriously awesome particle effects or something? otherwise it's all pretty ho-hum. usually tech demo's are unrealistically awesome looking since they're JUST rendering a face, or mountain range, or character and not much else. but here, it only looks "ok" even though it doesnt look like it's doing all that much (screens may not be telling the whole story tho). so far the simaritain demo for UE3.9 impressed me WAY more. maybe these are more in-line with what the engine can do in a REAL game situation?

we'll find out next month at any rate.

i imagine the mountains was showing off draw distance with world lighting and particle effects.. but aisde from that it looks like skyrim on a nice pc lol.

Cause the textures there using on it look like arse (click on img for full size) and the edges of the mountains still look like a game world.. is that low poly? i dunno to tired to think lol

It probably looks killer in motion. From what I understand, tessellation is going to replace "level of detail" that's present in games today. LoD is extremely taxing on the hardware and it doesn't eliminate pop-ups efficiently. If everything in the game is tessellated, including the characters and the environments, it will ultimately lead to zero pop-up, maximum immersion and great detail up close.

I really want to play a game like that, to bad the tessellation in Crysis 2 was horribly implemented...and Crysis 3 is coming to PS3/360 so that means the tessellation will be half baked in Crysis 3 as well. Come on next gen!!

I hope both Sony and MS delay their launch to Fall 2014, now that we have seen the Wii U specs and games they (Sony & MS) don't have anything to worry about.

They should wait for better tech and they go after Nintendo.

BTW Edge said Batman Arkham City looks worse on Wii U (lol)

Have we seen the wii-U's specs? Well, we do have to keep in mind what launch 360 and ps3 titles looked like. They were downright terrible compared to what we're getting now. Well, with the exception of things like Kameo, some parts of Perfect Dark, etc. We use to think COD2 looked good :P

With that being said, The 360 and PS3 had better graphics then the xbox or ps2. While the Wiiu has better graphics then the Wii apparently it doesnt compared to the ps3/360 according to edge. Its a shame.

Just give me a new generation already :( I love how people say wait for better tech, blah, blah, but here is the shocker- As long as the PC is around, there will ALWAYS be better tech available. If they don't give me something soon, I'm gonna be hyper-annoyed. The low-bar has been low for too long already.
Sure they are making better looking games, but when I see something like Watch Dogs or that Star Wars game... I don't want a pared-down console port. 2014 is Waay to far. The PC already out-strips the consoles in orders of magnitude, but a PC card never reaches it's full potential. I've been gaming on my PC more and more because the gap is getting stupid sometimes. I like playing on my couch, dammit!

As far as Nintendo is concerned, I'm afraid they may have just screwed the pooch by being so under-powered.That controller won't lure people like the Wii did, and the Wii crowd still has that cool toy Wii collecting dust next to the treadmill. They couldn't give two shit's about games that look like they are from an already old generation...

If the WiiU has only marginally more processing power than PS360 (mostly to accommodate an additional screen), as rumors say, then it won't see drastic graphics improvements PS360 saw in their lifetime. I think majority effective graphical tricks that could be employed on hardware of that ballpark have already been employed and companies that were investing in improving PS360 graphics will move on to PS4/Xbox 3.

Sony/MS now have enough time to steal every little innovative bit from the WiiU and pack in into their next consoles and outpower the WiiU dramatically.

If the WiiU does not sell very well in the first year after launch, it will look very bad for Nintendo...

nintendo is a profit genius - on the other hand sony still loses almost 40$ for every ps3 they sell - being a step back in raw power means cheaper development and nintendo always walked this path. sony should focus on making the next console more developer friendly. as for xbox ..they are getting
well within the game

If they go with a quicker launcher it will lead to mediocre tech...2 gb of ram and a shitty mid range PC graphics card. There's some good technology on the horizon (in the GPU department) it's called stacking and those cards don't launch until mid 2013. Using stacked chips might lead to 4 gb ram or more and a newer more efficient GPU.

I'd say they wait, let the engine mature some more (Unreal engine 4, luminous engine, Anvil engine 2) and by that time the tech will be there too (via stacked chips). At least then the next gen consoles will run those sexy games at 1080p @ 30 FPS

Historically consoles had been using near-release PC tech haven't they? Why can't we get a 2013 console with this stacked chip tech? I don't see why they would release a mid-range PC card anyway. Talk about bad PR. Regardless, being a closed box will give these systems a major leg up...

History doesn't matter any more bro, current top of the line PC graphics card are insanely ahead of current gen consoles and the rumoured next gen system specs. Problem is, those cards are huge and they draw insane amount of electricity and thus get hot very quickly. You can't take a GTX 680 and fit it inside a PS4 or Xbox 720 (it will lead to red ring of death and overheating) and not to mention a $700 price range.

That's why it's important to let things mature a bit....2014 is a good year to launch otherwise we will be stuck with 720p @ 30 fps with some DX11 features disabled

If any next gen console launches 2013 it'll be at the very end of the year anyway. Besides, even if they are launching holiday 2014 they still have to kinda decide the harware now, to get shit out to developers. No way can they just go "lol guys, we changed the GPU and it's 3 months to release. Better get them code monkeys working!" *incert troll face*.

It's very clear that the WiiU is a modest to fair upgrade of their current hardware, but anyone who expected more than that from Nintendo hasn't been paying attention to the way they've been doing business this generation. Nintendo wants a low cost upgrade that will help their near 100 million install base transition as quickly as possible. They want to get back to those large numbers as quickly as they can.

So they decided to go from 2002 tech (Wii basically being a GameCube) with the Wii in 2006 to 2006 tech in 2012... Not so good. They could have gone with a Mid-range PC spec and out-performed the current gen of consoles. Nintendo just can't take any risks with their hardware outside of the gimmicky stuff...

Actually the 6 series of cards have shrunk from both the 4 and 5 series of nvidia cards and draw far less power both when idle and under load, they also generate far far less heat. I'd say this generation of gfx card is probably more console fiendly than the chips in the current consoles. Also, the cost of the top end chips when the 360 launched wasn't THAT far off what we pay for mid-top end chips now anyway.
Also, whatever the consoles end up getting will be a custom designed chip fabricated into a die size that is both cost effective and size effective to produce the best yields rather than being shrunk to the smallest size with huge amounts of wastage. As long as they don't blow the budget on useless tat like kinect in every box and dedicate it to the budget for what you see on the screen in every game.

Wii I think is a low 6000 series chip, a couple of generations old already and only a generation or so newer than whats in our current consoles. It makes sense considering how small the console unit itself is and the price margin for the console budget considering it would cost about $100 to make the gamepad which has to ship with each console so you're left with about $150-$200 for the machine itself. It will offer something similar to what we have already and the ability to power upto 3 screens (2 gamepads), It just lets them join the "me too" category rather than being outright ignored for publishers or getting some crappy watered down handheld equivalent spinoff of the big games.
