GSY Video PC PS4 Xbox One

The reviews for DiRT Rally 2 have started to pop out but since we were only sent our code today, all we have for you is a first gameplay video. As you can imagine, we had no time to practice, so the following video is more or less our first attempt at the full stage you're about to see. Because our Fanatec wheel (CSL Elite for PS4) seems to cause performance issues, we had to play with our Xbox One Elite controller, but thankfully, gameplay seems to have been really polished for gamepads. Sound engines are also very impressive overall from what we've heard so far, but we can't help but find the visuals and lighting dated. What do you think?

You guys think it's dated? From these 2 videos, I think it looks pretty competent, and with a very pleasant art direction too (usually Codemasters tends to wash everything in brown when they try to use more colours). Yeah, trees are a little flat but...

Did you manage check how's the performance on base consoles?

It still looks nice, but there is still something "instagram filter-ish" about the post colour treatments they use. I get a distinct impression if you stripped all that off it would actually look better.

I get a sinking feeling codemasters aren’t going to be long for this world though. Then again, maybe DiRT 4 sold better then it appeared to?

Better somewhat dated gfx and 60 fps than cutting edge visuals at a nauseating 30 fps ..Anyway as a hardcore sim rally player i prefer the more realistic colour pallet of DR1 but i understand they need to attract a wider audience with "Forza Horizon" kind of aesthetics

On PC, it's never nauseating 30 fps like you say. Oddly enough, a lot of people say WRC7 looks ugly when it in fact looks better than the DiRT series (though it's still far behind the likes of Forza and GT). It's obviously not as demanding when it comes to the driving, but it's still fun and challenging because the stages are very well done and the physics engine works well for the most part. Maybe the other countries (or stages) of DiRT Rally 2 look better, we haven't had time to try any other, but DiRT 4 was also a bit lacking visually in my opinion (understandable on consoles to maintain a steady 60 fps, but on PC, there were really no excuses). You're right though, graphics are of second imortance when it comes to driving games.

You must try a run during sunrise or sunset in a stage with water puddles .It should look more interesting than midday on dry surface

Looks good enough, but more ground deformation is needed now, it's too static by today's standards. You really want to see those deep rut roads

Waiting for the VR patch. The first one was really good and this one is equally promising.

They're doing well enough to make a proper hardcore sim like this that panders to no one but people who want it that way, instead of the over the top "Yeah DUDE!" commercial bollocks that became the Dirt series. I wish more devs would step up and do the same in respective genres.

This one isn't without a hint of cynical "AAA" business practices, though. I hear that all of the Group B RWD cars have been omitted from the game. Some of which just so happen to be the most challenging, and fun, to drive. It could be the case they are doing a similar thing to those like they did with the first Dirt by releasing them later for free, but I doubt it.

Anyway, by most accounts that I've heard (from sim drivers and people who've actually been behind the wheel of a proper rally car, and not dickheads like IGN et al) this is a big step up from Dirt 1 in terms of physics, at least offroad. Cars on loose surfaces now react and behave as they would in the real world, and stages have rutting depending on when you start your run.

Hopefully they end up sorting a PSVR mode out, as Rift is getting one, but that's down to Sony and whether or not they want to stick their hands in their pocket.

Most real world stages don't have that. Sure, there's rutting, but only after the last cars have gone through the stage, and even then it's not huge like something you'd see in a arcade game like Sega Rally or something.

Well, when you're not first on the stage, terrain is different.

That's what I'm saying. There's no ruts and more surface gravel.

Just checked few vids, indeed there is not much deformation in real life too just tons of dust :)

You'll see it on corners the most, where the car has to be dropped to lower gears and higher revs to get out quick, causing rutting. I've seen videos of DR2.0 where ruts near bends have caused the car to flip. Didn't need to worry about that in previous rally sims.
