Xbox 360

Epic and Microsoft drop the bomb and release the first gameplay video of Gears of War 2. Two minutes of extreme violence and fire, for what appears to be an explosive hyperbole of the first title. Visually, it looks stunning.

Seriously, you're talking crap. I've just downloaded the video and watched it on my HDTV, and I can say they don't look the same. The lighting, the textures, everything, just looks so much better. I actually find it outstanding that they've managed to improve the visuals, seeing as the first Gears set a benchmark for next gen graphics.

But to try and convince yourself, and others, that it looks exactly the same ... Well, it's just foolish really.
I just watched it on a 56" hdtv and I'm telling you its the same. Watch the comparison video, sure marcus looks a little better. There is more color and they are doing some depth of field but everything else looked, meh, the same.

There's more newness in this video than any other game debuted in the last 12 months. Some people here are just talking shit for the sake of talking shit. I never knew a single game could make people this uncomfortable.
Exactly my thoughts.

You see a new gun or two and the ability to chainsaw somebody differently and you shit your pants.

You. have. low. standards.

I can't even tell what you're on about anymore. If it's the graphics, it's downright silly to complain about them at this point, especially when everything is looking so damn good--and if it's the gameplay, well--same. You're basically just telling everyone that it looks the same, except when it doesn't. That's brilliant.

No, I have uh, imagination. I can see how awesome meat shields are going to be in multi-player already. Picking up someone as their bleeding out and forcing their friends to kill them for you when their dying body provides you with cover? That's f'n brilliant. It's new, it's different, it's never been done before. Unlike, ya know, almost everything else I've seen revealed in new games in the last year or so.

So what impresses you?

I am happy for the Gears fans. As for myself I am not into this game at all because of the excessive use of male testosterone.
Where the hell is all the damn female COGs I ask...if any :S
I would love to see one, maybe someone like Sarah Connor in a COG armor, that would be bad ass.

Um, i'm not saying they look bad. I'm saying they don't look that much better.

Tell me they are leaps and bounds better. Tell me.

meat sheilds are new eh? so i'm to belive MGS2, Splinter cell and countless other games never existed then?

what impresses me... Hmm. Mirrors edge seems to be pushing some boundaries. Farcry2's scope and new weather/wind system is impressive. KZ2's death animations are cool as is the DMM in Starwars force unleashed.

Seriously, who are you trying to convince? I've just seen it on my own HDTV and i'm telling you that it's far from the same. So stop trying to convince others that it isn't, because you're kidding no one.

I don't know what you expected from this Gears, but this is exactly what I wanted. Like Grift said, some people just love to talk shit for the sake of it.

But yeah, you enjoy your "ability to sprint" and "1st person cover system" in Killzone 2 ('cos seriously, those are the only features that i've seen come out of Killzone 2) whilst i'm having chainsaw duels and holding up a locust that's getting the shit ripped out of it. I know which one sounds more enjoyable :)

You're wrong, this thread has turned into a "I have a larger hdtv than you, actually so large all I see are pixels, pixels, pixels ! All the same, pixels" thread.
I'm sure Cliffyb. has the largest hdtv by the way.
Meat shields would be great in MP, but what I hope for is a better code so that the host advantage won't be insane. We'll get new info about it next month, right ?

A drab, linear, scripted arcade shooter-fest set in a braindead context. The character designs and artistic style are just atrociously bad and cliched, and are serious offenses to the slightest semblance of good taste.
I am stunned at how well put that was and I wholeheartedly agree. Killzone - while comparably gray - is an INFINITELY better realised sci fi world.

The truth is, however, that I think the underlying game in Gears is absolutely incredible. I hate all the superficial design choices, but when you truly get into it I think it's a fantastic game. I'm a gamer before I'm an art critic and ultimately I'm pretty happy to experience good games even when they look a bit rough.

That said, I'm not thrilled about diving back into this drab void-of-surprise world to play a nearly identical game a second time, and as such this video is really disappointing to me. Halo is just never going to be topped by one note gameplay and enemy types, and I foolishly believed a second go round would address that fact.

I'll still play it though.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize it was death animations that were going to push this genre forward. And yes, meat shields, in the manner that I just described them are certainly new. It's been done before in stealth games in purely AI driven environments--it's never been done before in a multiplayer action shooter--it's never been done before in a scenario where the play isn't even dead yet. Yes, those are gameplay enhancements, and yes, they are new and refreshing.

But you're right, they're not death animations. Euphoria tech is awesome though, I'll concede to that point. Far Cry 2's scope isn't even the most appealing aspect of the game thus far, as it's been done before, many, many times.. and it's far from a sure thing.
Tell me they are leaps and bounds better. Tell me.
Tell me what sequel this generation, to an already fantastic looks game, looks leaps and bounds better. Tell me. The best I could possibly come up with is Conviction, but Double Agent was such a half assed effort.

It shouldn't, and they certainly aren't. The best action-shooter this generation thus far is hardly revolutionary at all. For me, that's Call of Duty 4--but even if it's a different game for you--it's still ultimately the same truth.

What are you smoking? This is using the same art assets and an extremely similar engine. How could it technically look as leaps and bounds better than GoW 1?

The way they fuse animation and ragdoll with hit detection is new and it does add a lot to the weight and realism of the characters.

I just played MGO which is a online action shooter and held somebody up and then shot his friend in the back of the head. Do I get a taco?

I for one was impressed with the video. The game doesnt need nor desire a large color pallette, remember this is an industrial end of the world scenario game. Do you really expect to see bright happy colors throughout? This is a post apocolyptic style environment, the coloring is superb as it was in the original.

Aside from that, they basically did improve the number of onscreen effects and increase the quality of the textures and framerate. Really though, was more expected? The original still looks better than anything else currently on the PS3 or X360.(I have all 3 consoles, just making a base statement not a fanboy remark)

Where did I say 'leaps and bounds'? Oh yeah that's right, I didn't. It's as much as an improvement visually from Gears 1 as we're gonna get. By simply implementing what was in the tech demo we saw, it would already look better than the first one. It has done this, so how can you possibly say it doesn't look better? Without lying, of course.

And once again, what were you expecting? If you were expecting the game to look 'leaps and bounds' better than a game that already set visual standards for a console game, you will be disappointed i'm afraid.

All I wanted for Gears 2 on the other hand was an improvement in visuals (which, despite your reluctance to accept it, is true), more gameplay features, a better story and a better MP. It appears as though Gears 2 is on the way to giving me all of that. Therefore, like a lot of other Gears fans, i'm dead happy.

Sorry bub, the visual high water mark is in Uncharted: Drakes Fortune's hands.

If you can mange to wrap you head around the idea that I never said it didn't look better than yay for you. It doesn't look THAT much better. It looks maybe 5% better than the first game. Maybe.

EDIT:

I was expecting better animations and a video that made me excited for the game. AS A GEARS FAN, that video did not impress me. They will have to a bit more than that to get me excited.

Atleast we will see a female character in Gears of War 2, that must count for something, even though she is not a COG soldier.

Maria Santiago (Dominic's lost wife).

I already know that I bet I will pget this game on day one, play it a few days and then return it. Because I am not a big fan of Gears, but I do think it is cool.

Metal Gear Online.

It is hardly a stealth game because everybody goes crazy around and shooting.
But once close enough you can CQC and hold them as shield and use your handgun as a weapon to kill the enemies.
I would know that because I was in the beta playing hours of it, hardly any stealth as a SP game is.

It has been done in MP that is not driven by an AI.

If that is what you meant of course, maybe I am wrong. If so, then my bad.

But for a fast paced shooter as Gears, this might take some time to even get close.

You are either sniped from far away or getting killed by a shotgun when you are close.

The only way to do that, I think you have to do what you do in Gears.
You keep shooting in the legs until they go down then you go close to pick them up and use them as shield.

I even doubt this enemy shield move will come in handy anyway.

I rather chainsaw them and kill them and get my point for it, rather their teammate kills me and revives their player.
