2007-05-30 03:43:47 Ubisoft: "Conviction Is A Risk, But We Believe In It"

Believes fans will respond well, but could always reintroduce "light-and-shadow" for sixth game

Splinter Cell producer Mathieu Ferland believes that Ubisoft's decision to reinvent the famed stealth series - ditching much of its light-and-shadow gameplay - will ultimately be vindicated by player reaction, despite the obvious risk.

We've been working very closely with the fans from the beginning," Ferland told GamesIndustry.biz. "Their first reaction was, 'What's going on? Where's Sam?' And then they discovered these new possibilities, this new mechanic and they said, 'That looks awesome. I want to play it.'"

However, the producer admitted that Ubisoft could return to past values if things go wrong with Conviction, the fifth game in the series.

"It's not a one-way direction," he confirmed. "You can always go back and do different things, having Sam in a new position, or a different character to explore light-and-shadow gameplay."

Whereas past games were about avoiding detection in highly-charged situations, Conviction puts protagonist Sam Fisher on the run from the law, and forces players to mingle in crowds, overcoming enemies through confrontation and distraction rather than evasion.

It also reduces the number of complex controls players will need to master, using context-sensitive Aggression, Stealth and Interaction buttons rather than a broad range of button combinations.

"To us, it's a nice way to expand the brand," Ferland said of the overall approach, "because Ubisoft is a nice company and you can push it hard with innovation, especially in Splinter Cell, and sometimes when you want to push innovation you need to adapt your creative direction to fit the kind of gameplay you want to provide."

Ferland also said that he had been encouraged by the reaction he received from trade and press during the game's demonstration at the UbiDays showcase in Paris last week.

Wii60!

"We've said that Gears of War was graphically the best game have ever been made, well it looks like Pong compared to Crysis and some of the DX10 titles."

Conviction is a big risk and it will be justified or scorned based upon the reaction of consumers -- i.e. do they buy it? Ubi is taking a big risk here with an established franchise...

1/ The game is good... and sells well.
2/ The game is bad... and sells well.
3/ The game is good... and sells poorly.
4/ The game is bad... and sells poorly.

Based on the competition in the market and the fact they are radically changing the fracnhise #2 doesn't seem likely at all. So 66% of likely/possible outcomes are bad for Ubi whereas with a "tried and true" Splinter Cell forumal with the extra sauce next gen Montreal treatment surely would have sold well, if not had a few spasms of "sequalitis".

At least they create a game they want to create, not a game that is a safe pass.

They deserve some praise for that. Although ultimately it is about creating games consumers want. But in this day and age of hype, marketing, market placement, and brand appeal making a good game that you either like to make or consumers will like takes a back seat to games which consumers are told they will like.

Well I'm glad they are willing to experiment with their franchises.

Very few large companies do that these days, from what i saw it looked pretty good.

I hope the game will kick ass - concept is very good and their technology is also cutting edge, BUT the concept has to be executed extremely well so that the game doesn't feel lame and grotesque. Also good story to support the gameplay is needed. Plus they need to polish the game. I hope they'll take their time with it - there are already enough realeases this year.

It needs a ton of polish as the way it showed up at ubidays wasn't the best display of the game although it looked great graphically.

The animations were funny it looked like he had superhuman strength almost the way he tossed people sometimes.
