2007-06-04 16:41:32 Naruto: Rise of a ninja WILL have japanese with subtitles http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/news-features/news/Narut... Although based on a cult Japanese animation show Naruto for Xbox 360 is being developed in North America by French publisher Ubisoft. However these guys are Naruto maniacs whose dream has been to realise Naruto’s unique ninja lifestyle as a wildly entertaining videogame. Everything included in Rise of a Ninja is approved by Studio Pierrot, creators of the original animation series. Attention to detail extends to the inclusion of the original voice actors from the TV show, recognisable in every language… and that includes Japanese with subtitles for the purists! --- |

Many localizations are pretty poor in this regard.. I hope you can play w/ Japanese voices + English subs in Trusty Bell as well. |

2007-06-04 17:34:07 In reply to GriftGFX (2007-06-04 17:29:54) Posted by GriftGFX English voice actors for animation are a mixed bag.. some are pretty good.. and sometimes dubs lead to superior translations.. but most of the time they're cheap and lazy and sound bad compared to the original voice actors. Many people watch the anime with the original voices in tact, and that's what they want from the videogame. Hell, Shenmue wasn't even adapted from anime or anything and that game still had horrible English voices. Many localizations are pretty poor in this regard.. I hope you can play w/ Japanese voices + English subs in Trusty Bell as well. and yeah, you pretty much hit the nail on the hand on why people prefer the original voices. as for this news in general, awesome to hear. Game keeps getting better and better. --- |

2007-06-04 17:37:34 Like Grift said, the original Japanese voices are the best, the English voices are just annoying to be honest... |

2007-06-04 17:42:28 I don't know if it's the case with ALL anime, but it's mostly true. There are reasonable English voice actors out there though, ones that work almost exclusively with anime even.. but by in large you're right. English voices mostly suck. |

2007-06-04 17:45:34 In reply to gmulis (2007-06-04 17:43:19) Posted by gmulis Grift from what i get it . its how the sound of japanses actor sound, right! Usually the original voice actors do a much better job.. and even when they don't.. perhaps it's more difficult to pick up on that, since I don't know the language. |

Disney has actually done a stellar job localizing the Ghibli movies.. in some cases a less literal translation is welcome. But that was driven by a huge budget, theatrical releases, and top shelf voice talent (including real.. actors). That's not all that common. It just seems like they use a low budget for it, Disney and Dreamworks use a large budget for it....wich boosts the quality. |

2007-06-04 17:57:02 Yea.. I'm sure budget has a lot to do with it too. |

2007-06-04 18:03:15 Slayers had very good English voice acting. I didn't have a chance to watch English Naruto, but Polish is laughable. :D --- |

Posted by GriftGFX Yea.. I'm sure budget has a lot to do with it too. One thing I will say though.. I hate bad subs just as much as bad dubs. Overly literal translations are bad enough, but some of the fansubs I've seen (mostly bootlegs from Chinatown) are obviously being handled by people who don't really have a firm grasp on the English language. That's just as bad. It's about keeping things in context with what is being said on screen in Japanese, not only that some things are hard to translate. --- |

2007-06-05 00:33:55 In reply to Martijn_ (2007-06-04 17:37:34) I look at it like this: Posted by Martijn_ This is the case with all the latest Animes, the old Animes have good voices but in this time it's like they search for the most horrible voice actors. Here are some with excellent English VA performances, for anyone who’s interested: Wolf’s Rain, FLCL (Fooly Cooly), Cowboy Bebop series/movie, Paranoia Agent, Last Exile, RahXephon, Ghost in the Shell SAC+ 2nd GIG/movie, Trigun, Gungrave, The Place Promised in our Early Days, Koi Kaze, Bluesubmarine No. 6, Outlaw Star… Others worth mentioning are (show and dub-wise): - Hellsing, Gad Guard, Which Hunter Robin, Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, Scrapped Princess, Planetes... Just to name a few...I haven’t watched a lot of anime though because I don’t think there are many good anime series out there anyway. But going back to "Naruto: Rise of a Ninja;" as mentioned already, having the Japanese language included should make even more people happy when they pick up the game. It's a nice plus. --- |

2007-06-05 04:50:44 Part of the problem is that the voice acting budget for dubs is low. There are really good Enlgish voice actors, they just don't usually show up on anime (Mark Hamil being somewhat of an exception). You don't see Phil Lamarr, Grey Delise or Tara Strong showing up in dubs. In "domestic" animation (hey everything is animated in Korea now anyway) there are limits on the number of characters to actually keep costs down after the last union contract (a voice actor can provide up to three voices, any more and you need more actors). |

2007-06-05 22:28:27 i think it boils down to the fact that you can pickup bad english voice acting, and not really bad japanese voice acting. that and the fact that it tends to sound more lively over english dubs. |

Posted by BlimBlim Ok just got a reply from my PR contact at Ubisoft, he can't confirm anything, and he has no idea where they got their information.
