Virtua Fighter 5 on Xbox 360 will feature online multiplayer

http://www.xbox360only.nl/nieuwsitem.php?nid=6705

22 There have been a lot of rumors since Virtua Fighter 5 was announced for the Xbox 360. Would there be Xbox Live multiplayer or wouldn't there be? SEGA, at first, said: 'No, it wont', but today SEGA confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 will indeed be featuring online multiplayer duels over Xbox Live.

And that's not all. The Xbox 360 version will feature the latest update in playmechanics from the Arcade version. Also, the Quest Mode has been expanded, with more CPU-opponents to fight with as well as more objects and articles to customize your character with. That's not all because the DOJO-mode will also be receiving an update on the Xbox 360 version. New functions have been added, like: rankings, training settings, throw- and defensive training as well as a feature to adjust the opponents health and position.

Probably the biggest improvement will be the addition of online multiplayer duels through Xbox Live. Players can compete 1-on-1 with any player from around the world. Players can choose from a total of 17 different characters, which are all individually customizable. Each character has four different costumes but more costumes can be unlocked by playing the Quest Mode. Release: Autumn 2007.

I wonder if Sega intended for Online LIVE in it from the beginning, but since PS3 released first, they didn't want to tick off Sony and make that version look completely inferior right out of the gate?

I doubt it.. they've had legitimate reasons for not taking this franchise online. Should be interesting to see how well or poorly it functions. Happy day.

Simply piss-poor sales of PS3 version + easy to implement Live libraries + Microsoft's support = it was inevitable. Good news for 360 gamers who want to play VF5.

Latency is going to be killer, but it's nice to have the option anyhow. I'm sure this will move more copies to the casual fighting fans.

The option as I see it is mostly there to pat the casual fans on the head, and even more so make the game sell (which is really why I'm okay with it). For me, personally? Let's just say I prolly won't spend much time with that portion of the game.

However, a positive aspect for me with this is that the game is very much online enabled, which should ensure that both updating it to new versions AND using your gamertag/Live profile as your in game profile is possible, in turn hopefully enabling taking your characters with you to a friend's house and having your wins and losses recorded to your statistics.

Yeah but as with every online fighting game, you'll learn to deal with it, this is really awesome news, cant wait!

Learning to deal with lag is like, learning to unlearn the core game. Bleh.

But it might be manageable. If you can play SF3 online, why not.

Well it's going to strip it of a lot of fundamental, incredibly timing dependant tactics like multiple throw escapes buffering I imagine, but of course it's going to be playable. It's just gonna be a rougher version of VF than longtime hardcore fans are used to.

The number of "hardcore" Virtua Fighter players is so low that to cater to them exclusively would ruin Sega.

More than they are already I mean.

Yes:

The Xbox 360™ version of Virtua Fighter™ 5 is based on the latest arcade version update and features both analogue-stick and D-pad control, as well as vibration support. The game also includes an improved Quest mode featuring more CPU rivals, items, and emblems for character customisation. The DOJO mode has added features including leaderboards, training move settings, improved throw and escape training, and the option to change your opponent’s position and recovery type. These all work to create a more refined DOJO mode where players can improve their fighting strategy.

Maybe so but you can bet they've had to tread very carefully around Sony for this one.

Should be interesting to see if this does any better in Japan as a result.
