2007-07-26 01:46:53 Personal Impressions of Heavenly Sword I haven't written one of these for a while and it's about time I got back into the habit of it. Quite apt really as I couldn't think of a better game I've played recently to move me into doing so. Shane Kim owes me money. On buying a PS3: Within the first few minutes of starting up Heavenly Sword it became apparent that it was no longer a question of "if" or even one of "when", just a matter of "how much". ...it took me 5 minutes to make a different decision. One that was reaffirmed 20 minutes later with a moment of pure gaming gold. After dispatching a large group of villains with varying degrees of style, I was able to prompt the stunningly elegant Nariko to pick up discarded sword mid follow-through and still within one fluent movement turn and throw it in the direction of a lone solider who had been mocking her condescendingly from the nearby bridge. As the camera zoomed in behind the missile Robin Hood style, a twist of the SixAxis altered the flight of the weapon just enough to ensure that it landed square between his eyes and sent him tumbling over the rope to oblivion. This was swiftly followed by yours truly leaping out of the chair with a shriek of "ON YOUR HEAD SON!" much to the bemusement of those in the immediate vicinity. A one-off moment that would never happen again? The difference with this game is, it could. The quality of animation in this game is to my eyes, staggering. But more importantly, for the first time I felt in control of such grace whilst at the same time retaining a sense of responsiveness. Normally I detest anything less than full camera control but letting the game worry about it felt second nature as did diving around using the right thumbstick to evade. Blocking is as simple as not moving. Depending on what stance you are being attacked with, you may have to block in a different stance, which is as easy as holding down L1 or R1. Much like the spin in Table Tennis the enemy will have a subtle glow about them to indicate the type of attack. Counters are then performed with a well timed press of Triangle, special moves with circle and combos unleashed with combinations of square, triangle, holding either down and changes of stance that range from simple, complex and all points in between giving the combat system depth whilst remaining intuitive. Even the SixAxis motion capability chips in, when knocked in the air, a quick shake can pull off a flashy recovery attack and ultimately a well timed jerk upwards is the key to unleashing the air combos. Subtle but effective. Suddenly I could perform these moves with an ease and variety that I hadn't been able to in other games and combined with the stunning animation rendered in crisp HD the overall effect is way above anything I personally experienced in other games. the cutscenes are by far and away the best I've seen in a game, period. Andy Serkis' involvement has made quite the impact and his performance as the chief antagonist is not only towering but captured with an astonishing degree of fidelity...The use of advanced facial motion capture and real performances from real actors makes for scenes that are really emotive and genuinely convincing The gameplay is nicely broken up with some puzzle solving elements and QTE type set pieces. The running along the rope scene being one example of such. At other times even different characters. In addition, there are several sequences that require controlling a projectile weapon using the SixAxis to complete, be it a cannon or a bow and arrow. Having fallen madly in love with Nariko already, the first time this happened I kicked off and spent 5 minutes whinging about lack of rumble/cheap Robin Hood knock off game mechanics but having calmed down, it's actually a nice diversion from the main fare and works quite well once you get used to it I can hand on heart say however, I've not seen a game which has made such a first impression on me since Halo and that too was the last title that compelled me to buy hardware to play it, as will this. In my opinion, a game of this type hasn't been done with this level of fidelity and made this cinematic and accessible. |

2007-07-26 02:45:43 In reply to Jin187 (2007-07-26 02:24:49) Posted by Jin187 How about Ninja Gaiden? Of course it's not a fair comparison as we're comparing across generations. Ninja Gaiden 2 would be fairer obviously :-) If I had seen Ninja Gaiden 2 first I might equally have gone mad over that. I guess if you're Shane Kim and you know you've got NG2 you're less inclined to go after Heavenly Sword....personally I'd have both but still, we'll see. |

2007-07-26 03:13:28 So does the PS3 have its first true system seller, with Heavenly Sword do you think? Will it have broad based appeal? |

So of course it's a "hack 'n slash" esque game in many respects but I tie no negative connotations to that. I could play this all day whereas N3 bored me after 5 minutes. Posted by LEBATO It's also surprising to hear cut-scenes are that great. I mean, after seeing so many great MGS cut-scenes, it's a little hard to believe really. How are Heavenly Sword's cutscenes better than MGS's? Whether the content of what you're watching is enjoyable is entirely subjective but the cutscenes are incredibly well done for me. Posted by anm8rjp So does the PS3 have its first true system seller, with Heavenly Sword do you think? Will it have broad based appeal? With that said, it definitely pushed me over the edge into getting one and it certainly demands attention. I wouldn't buy a PS3 for Motorstorm, Resistance, Lair, Uncharted or even all four, but I would for this. That's about as anecdotal as you'll get however! It has broad appeal as the presentation is very cinematic in nature and the controls are simple yet intuitive, and it's not a bald space marine shooting aliens either. 2007-07-26 22:24:28 Just played the demo twice, thought it had a very good combat system. Graphics were also quite nice. Camera worked very well also I have to say. |

2007-07-26 22:26:52 In reply to JediMasterMalik (2007-07-26 22:24:28) What bit of the game do you get to play in the demo? I've seen it's the running down the rope part jumping onto the pillar, kick some ass, take some names and then down into the town. Is there anything beyond that? |

Looks awesome. Plays pretty well. Can't really give a decent impression because I wasn't aware I had to do anything beyond press triangle to counter. I'll have to play it again with this stance knowledge. Even with that, it seems like you can't kill most enemies unless they attack you first. It's very counter/timing based. Not straight action. People (like me) looking for the next God of War will probably be disappointed. I'll give it another play through, but from my first, I'm not in a hurry to see the conclusion and I'll probably wait to add this one to my PS3 buy list next year rather than missing out on other games this year. --- |

2007-07-27 01:57:28 Not worth me getting my PS3 just to play a 5 minute demo then! Kinda weird segment of the game to rip then...I'd have picked the end of the first chapter. |

2007-07-27 02:30:34 Eh, I'm glad I played the demo before this game came out, cause now I don't have to waste $60. I was really hoping for something different from GOW but it just feels like I have played this game before. |
