The latest issue of US Game Informer, the magazine that doesn't bother printing unless it has a world exclusive on the cover, has revealed the latest shooter from Gearbox Software, Borderlands.

The game's described as a "sci-fi RPG/shooter" and has more than a passing resemblance to Id Software's Rage. Game Informer says it's "Diablo meets Mad Max' and features full-on four-player co-op, which seems to be all the rage at the moment.

Other than that, details are scarce at the moment. We're most interested though by the supposed "RPG" elements of the game. Does that mean you'll be able to customize your vehicle? A bit like Rage? Id Software's going to be pissed.

Borderlands is in development for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. We expect we'll be seeing more of it at Leipzig next week.

Another apocalytpic sci-fi :D!!!

DC, I thought no scans, and by records you got how many warnings do you got :S.

Anyway, I am not complaining, awesome find!

I like the guy in the air...hopefully its not gonna be racing/shooter, meaning like Full Auto or some dumb crap like that. Hopefully more at FPS than racing, but it do look like "Rage".

Gonna keep my eye out on this one...unless its racing/RPG/shooter (with vehicles).

If it has more FPS then im all for it, but if its like sci-fi Full Auto RPG then sorry.

Gearbox has been working on Borderlands for roughly 20 months, but the team still has another 15-18 months to go before we'll see the game on store shelves. As such, the early build only showcased a few select areas, story segments, and guided gameplay. The demo was only about a half of an hour long, but it gave a great impression of the direction the team is taking with the game.

A big part of the demo shown to us focused on some of the RPG elements that have been infused throughout the game. Your character will level up through combat, giving him new strengths and abilities. The one we saw enabled him to leap much higher into the air than normal. You can also stroll through town and upgrade your vehicles, buy new weapons, trade and heal your character in between missions.

Ah yes, the weapons. Generated almost randomly, these procedurally created tools of destruction come in a vast range of designs. The classes we saw were all fairly typical, but the appearance and stats on each made them different enough to make seeking out new weapons a cool little prospect. This is where the Diablo reference came in earlier. You won't be able to design weapons yourself from pieces or design specs you collected. Rather, you'll have to find them in the world, meticulously searching for a better or more effective design. We saw a shotgun with an over-the-top strength that could quite literally blast an enemy across the screen. We also saw a variety of assault rifles and pistols that ranged from six-shooters to futuristic high caliber death sticks. If you like collecting, this game looks like it was made purely for you.

One thing that is already on the fast track in Borderlands is the visuals. While there is still room for improvement, the enemy design (particularly the aforementioned behemoth) has a nice sci-fi appeal and the environments we saw looked cool enough to warrant a nice exploratory trip. The salt flats where a vehicular combat demo took place were reminiscent of the area outside of Salt Lake City, only much more barren.

I am looking forward at Borderlands ALOT.

I have to ask this again just to be sure this time...

Is this a FPS/RPG with also vehicles as options?

If so, then its still great.

I love the wasteland sci-fi type, and the vehicle stuff reminds me of Motorstorm with the dunebuggy and dirtbikes and all that, very cool.

But I am glad its not a racing only game, and 4 player co-op sounds sweet.

Can't wait for the first footage and trailer :D.

I am just surprised its coming to consoles as well, because these types of art designs, and gameplay always goes to PC only. But now I know if it is cool looking I don't have to worry about anything :D.

I did read it was a FPS with vehicles, thats why people kept saying it was like Rage but with RPG.

I hope its true, because then its gonna be awesome, knowing Rage is PC only for now while Borderlands is for PC and consoles, hopefully great.
