2007-08-21 02:37:41 Skate Demo Out - Impressions

On the skate. EA forums, Scott Blackwood (as Scott BWood (EA.com)) posted the following in response for a request of a demo of the game[14]:
"Also, we're shooting to have an X360 and PS3 downloadable demo out for you guys well before the real deal drops. If you're jonesing, that will provide an early fix. You'll definitely want to check it out.
You'll be able to go through the tutorials, do some challenges, meet a few pros, create videos and more. At least that's the plan."
The demo was scheduled for release on Xbox Live for August 15th[15] but was delayed (as stated by Scott Blackwood on the skate. forums) due to a sudden problem with the demo's skate.reel (video editing) feature. The skate. demo is now set for release on the 21st of August as posted by Scott Blackwood on the skate. forums:
"Oh yeah... just got word from [Microsoft] that the demo should be out very, very early Tuesday morning PST. Looks like we're all approved. AND keep in mind it's all in their hands so I'm just telling you what I'm being told!!! I hope our servers will be ready for the onslaught of vids. Be patient with skate.reel for the first day. There will undoubtedly be kinks to work out on the fly."

Hideous loading times. Its taken me about 5 minutes to actually start the damn game. Back in a bit with impressions.

My download been stuck at 61% for like an hour, did the cancel then redownload and leaving 360 in sleep mode stuff. Nothing worked. If I were actually still be paying for Live, I'd be a little upset :p

Yeah mine was stuck on exactly 61% aswell. Strange. I turned off my 360 and went to start the download again and it said there was not enough space. I deleted a bunch of stuff and the download finished very quickly.

I have to say I didn't like this demo much. Controlling is just too complicated for me. I keep doing wrong moves all the time and it is really hard to start grinding. Camera was bad too. I couldn't see much behind that dude and the camera angle made controlling even harder. I might try it again to see if it gets any better more you play but right now I am disappointed.

its a really good attempt at a more realistic skateboarding game. personally i think its a ton (like, light years) better than tony hawk's. control takes a bit getting used to but when you've figured out what you need to do (lining up for grind etc, just like the real thing) you can pull off lines that looks just like in the tv. definitely something to look forward to

This is a joke, ive been downloading it since it came out, so about 6 hours and it hadn't even done more then 43% and it hadn't moved, so i deleted the files and tried to download again, only for it to be stuck at 1% for the past hour, EA sort your f***ing servers out ffs

I know EA uses its own match-making servers, but I think their marketplace content is still hosted by Microsoft.. I think. And for the record, I've had simular issues downloading a ton of recent demos, most notably Bioshock. Downloading a new demo has been frustrating for some time now.

So maybe MS should sort their f***ing servers out, ffs.

tried to download Far cry instincts on XBL, 14% in about a minute, i guess i'll have to wait a couple days as the Europe Servers seem to be garbage

Ok impressions.

It's cool, it's fun, but it has some major problems--so not really. The cinematic camera angle is nice and lets you see all the cool moves, but it wears off rather quickly and gets in the way of good gameplay. It's hard to see what else is coming in front of you, and especially hard to time jumps to rails.

Controls are also a problem. I don't know if that's a demo thing only, but they better offer other ways to handle the gameplay. To sum it all up, if you want to do something else other than a simple flip, you'll find yourself having to pull down and up with the right analog, rotate with the left analog, and pressing one of the triggers in a combo-like fashion that is just made all harder thanks to the camera angle from which you play.

I'm sorry EA, but there's nothing terribly exciting about having to make the simple act of jumping an unnecessarily complex matter. I'd rather have the option to simple press A damn it! It is cool for the first few seconds, but then your realize how quickly you have to react so many times, and you better watch out and go straight up with that analog or else you'll do a kick flip, and if you didn't jump high enough you'll simply not make it.

Graphics are better than the last Tony Hawk by a decent margin. Animations are also a lot better, yet they could still be better. There's some nice lighting all around, textures are pretty much Tony Hawk's level. And from there on there's nothing to see.

And that's all I have to say. Controls are not my thing at all, and I do appreciate the "realism", but there's just no need for these controls.

I'm not a big fan of the whole everything must be controlled with the two analog sticks trend in most EA games.. so that comment worries me. Sounds like a total turn off to me. I'll still give it a fair shot later.

I think the idea of the controls is pretty cool, but when actually playing I found it very difficult to make the dude do what I wanted. I cant easily pull off heel flips or kick flips. It might be a game I rent some time next year when I dont have anything to play but right now I dont feel bad passing it up.
